About the project

Nowadays, women still find it difficult to embrace a career in themathematical academic world. One of the goals of this exhibition isto draw attention to this issue by presenting mathematics throughwomen mathematicians’ perspectives and samples of their life stories.As well as reporting on the obstacles they came across, they sharewith us their contagious enthusiasm for mathematics. May their joyof this discipline serve as a welcome to the world of mathematics.

The exhibition offers a glimpse into this singular world through pho-tographs (by Noel Tovia Matoff) and excerpts of interviews (by SylviePaycha and Sara Azzali) of thirteen women mathematicians through-out Europe. The portrayed women represent a cross-section of math-ematicians, from different geographical regions, at different stagesof their career and working in different fields of mathematics.

The exhibition you are seeing today is the result of two years’ worth ofintensive work, performed alongside photographer Noel Matoff andthree mathematicians, Magdalena Georgescu and Sara Azzali fromPotsdam, and Alexandra Antoniouk from Kiev. In 2014, in prepara-tion for a talk I had been asked to give at the University of Konstanzon “Women and mathematics”, I wrote to ten female mathemati-cians I know around the world, asking them to answer a set of ques-tions related to their careers. I assembled the replies, together with aphotograph of each mathematician, in a hand-made booklet entitled“Women mathematicians around the world. A gallery of portraits”.Feedback received from this project was the impetus towards a muchmore ambitious goal, an exhibition at the 7th European Congress ofMathematics.

We are happy to welcome you to the exhibition, which was made pos-sible thanks to the support of various organizations, in particular theHumboldt Stiftung, from which the project received the “HumboldtAlumni Award 2015 for Innovative Networking Initiatives”. Network-ing has already actively started while planning the future venues forthe exhibition throughout Europe. For the venue in Potsdam, I wouldlike to thank Christian Bär and Wilhelm Huisinga, respectively pastand present directors of the Mathematics Institute for their generoussupport, Michaela Probst for hosting the exhibition in this beautifullibrary as well as the University office for equal opportunities rep-resented today by Franka Bierwagen, for funding the catalogue. Diesessteht in Verbindung mit innerwissenschaftlichen UmbrüchenWissenschaft, vor allem aber auch damit, dass sich in den 1980erJahren international ein neues Gleichberechtigungsverständnisherausbildet: Formen der ungleichenVerteilung werden nun als Ausdruck fehlender Gleichberechtigungaufgefasst. Vor diesem Hintergrund diskutiere ich Musterungleicher Verteilung in Bezug auf die Mathematik und frage, wiesich diese im Lichte anderer Disziplinen darstellen.

Komponistinnen

Fanny Hensel (* 14.11.1805 in Hamburg; † 14.5.1847 in Berlin,gebürtig Fanny Zippora Mendelssohn; getauft Fanny CäcilieMendelssohn Bartholdy) war eine Komponistin der deutschenRomantik, deren Gesamtwerk - mit wenigen Ausnahmen - erst 1965aus Familienbesitz der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz anvertrautwurde. Eine musikalische Karriere und Veröffentlichungen zuLebzeiten waren ihr von der Familie weitgehend untersagt worden.Unter den weit mehr als 450 Werken Fanny Hensels finden sichKammermusikwerke, Chöre, Kantatenkompositionen, szenischeWerke, Orchestermusik und ihre Lieder, der “neben denKlavierwerken wichtigste Schaffensbereich Fanny Hensels”, vondenen sie etwa 250 verfasste. Nur ein Bruchteil davon wurdebislang verŽffentlicht, die ersten hatte Felix Mendelssohn unterseinem Namen drucken lassen.

Emilie Luise Friederika Mayer (* 14.5.1812 in Friedland,Mecklenburg; † 10.4.1883 in Berlin) war eine deutscheKomponistin. Sie hinterließ ein umfangreiches musikalisches Werk,komponierte acht Sinfonien, zwölf Streichquartette,Klavierkammermusik, fünfzehn Konzertouvertüren, Violin- undCellosonaten, Klavierwerke, ein Singspiel nach Goethe, Lieder undvierstimmige Chöre. Ihre Kompositionen gerieten nach ihrem Todweitgehend in Vergessenheit - ein Schicksal, das sie mit vielenanderen Komponistinnen teilt.

Dame Ethel Mary Smyth (* 23.4.1858 in Sidcup; † 8.5.1944 inWoking) war eine englische Komponistin, Dirigentin, Schriftstellerinund eine der Mitkämpferinnen der britischen Suffragetten. EthelSmyths Leben war wesentlich davon geprägt, sich als Komponistindurchzusetzen und als solche Anerkennung in der Öffentlichkeit zufinden. Sie hatte den Anspruch, in ihrer Arbeit nicht als nebenherkomponierende Lady, sondern als gleichwertig zu ihren mŁnnlichenKollegen gesehen zu werden und von ihrer Arbeit zu leben. IhreKompositionen umfassen sinfonische Werke, Kammermusik,Chorwerke und Opern. Ihre bekannteste Oper ist The Wreckers(deutsch Strandrecht). Ihr bekanntestes Werk ist allerdings TheMarch of Women, das zu einer Hymne der englischenFrauenbewegung wurde.

Catalogue

The catalogue of the exhibition, also entitled “Women ofMathematics throughout Europe. A gallery of portraits”, containsthe full interviews with the thirteen women mathematicians, theportraits, and pictures from their impromptu presentations wherethey described their research. Additionally, it contains two morethematically related interviews, with composer Elena Mendoza andwith midwife Matina Matoff.
