PRIORITIES AND FEEDBACK As part of our consultation process we strive to identify the issues that matter most to local people, and also inform you about how we are dealing with these problems. Hence the following issues have been raised by members of the local community either during meetings or by other engagement activities such as police surgeries or one to one discussions. The priorities and feedback for the Jewellery Quarter and St Pauls neighbourhood are: Increase patrols in the Jewellery Quarter to tackle the threat of robberies: Seasonally the Christmas and New Year period is the busiest time in the JQ and coupled with the increase in the price of Gold the JQ Neighbourhood team has worked alongside force traffic resources to ensure officers have spent 80% of their time dedicated to preventing offences. As a result no offences of robbery were reported in December 2009. This priority was identified by the seasonal increase in business and local courier firms who felt vulnerable.

Speeding vehicles and motorists contravening the one way system around Charlotte Street: Residents were concerned with motorists driving the wrong way along Charlotte Street which is a one way street. Members of the public also complained about motorists speeding along Newhall Hill and congestion issues around Tescos on Warstone Lane which is a bottle neck. The local community highlighted this problem during October 2009.

Launch of retail radio in the Jewellery Quarter: In partnership with local Jewellers and the Retail radio group, officers have issued twenty retail radios which have improved communication between Jewellers, Police and CCTV operators. This priority was identified by the JQ regeneration partnership. Answers - feedback and solutionsIncrease patrols in the Jewellery Quarter to tackle the threat of robberies: As a result of Operation TWYER no offences of robbery were reported in December 2009. Uniform and plain clothes officers have conducted targeted patrols to ensure intelligence is gathered and offences prevented. We are now working with the Jewellers to set up a voluntary regulation scheme which will ensure photographic identification is provided when selling Gold in the JQ. This will deter unscrupulous customers visiting the area and assist Police in identifying handlers of stolen property. Speeding vehicles and motorists contravening the one way system around Charlotte Street: The PCSO’s have patrolled the area and issued numerous fixed penalty notices. Letters have been distributed to users of a car park in Charlotte Street educating motorists regarding the consequences of taking an illegal shortcut. Two officers from the NH team are now trained in using equipment to tackle speeding in the NH. A meeting has taken place with the Highways engineer who is looking at several options around improving parking outside Tescos.

Launch of retail radio in the Jewellery Quarter: Retail radio is allowing Jewellers to talk directly with the Police and CCTV operators who monitor cameras in the JQ. This allows officers to be deployed more effectively and makes the neighbourhood an even safer place to live work and visit. A recent funding application was made in partnership with the Jewellery Quarter regeneration partnership and the police for a further 25 radios but we are currently on the reserve list. If any business is interested in joining the scheme they should contact any member of the JQ team.
