PREAMBLE

The success of a large sports event

depends on many factors. Along with

best conditions, as far as technology,

cross-country tracks, ski-jumping hills,

etc. are concerned, the people play a

decisive role. Not only as helping hands

for the perfect organisation of World

Championships, but also as passionate

supporters of large sports events. Sport

lives on the support of enthusiastic people

who like to visit an attractive venue, but

also on people, who like to care for their

guests. This is why so many inhabitants of

Oberstdorf have already supported our

candidature campaign for the two World

Championships with a photograph which

shows them cheering.

Oberstdorf offers impressive facts and

qualifi cations that speak for themselves:

During the events of 1987 and 2005,

more than 750,000 spectators from

all over the world were celebrating in

Oberstdorf. And this is exactly where we

want to carry on, in order to – once again

– break all records with a unique setting.

Once more, we want to present athletes,

offi cials and spectators with two unforget-

table festivals of ski sports!

der vergangenen Jahrzehnte sind in Oberst-

den Jahren 1987 und 2005 über alle Gren-

zen hinweg zwei unvergessliche Ski-Feste in

INTRODUCTION

La réussite d’une grande manifestation

sportive dépend de beaucoup de facteurs.

En plus des meilleures conditions tech-

niques, des meilleures pistes de ski de

fond, des meilleurs tremplins de saut à

ski, etc., les hommes jouent aussi un très

grand rôle. Pas seulement les volontaires

qui aident à organiser un parfait cham-

pionnat du monde, mais aussi tous ceux

qui soutiennent avec passion cette grande

manifestation sportive.

Le sport vit grâce à des hommes passion-

nés – des hommes qui prennent plaisir à

aller à une telle manifestation attrayante,

mais aussi des hommes enthousiastes qui

sont toujours là pour accueillir leurs hôtes.

C’est pour cette raison que de nombreux

Oberstdorfois se sont au préalable per-

sonnellement engagés dans la campagne

de candidature pour les deux champion-

nats du monde.

En plus des données impressionnantes,

Oberstdorf possède beaucoup de critères

Oberstdorf is located amidst beautiful

nature, in the nature reserve “Allgäu

High Alps”. Framed by an impressive

mountain landscape and right at the foot

of the Nebelhorn mountain, Oberstdorf

has developed as a village with a lively

atmosphere and a long cultural tradition.

Athletes from all over the world – and

hundreds of thousands of tourists – have

appreciated this atmosphere.

It only takes about two hours to get to

Germany’s southernmost municipality

from the airports in Munich, Stuttgart

and Zurich and even less from the Allgäu

Airport in Memmingen.

In Oberstdorf, distances are short; you

can easily explore the village by foot.

Thanks to the village’s excellent infrastruc-

ture all sports facilities can be reached

quickly. Therefore, no extensive construc-

tion works that might compromise nature

are necessary.

Das besondere Plus: Von den Flughäfen

München, Stuttgart oder Zürich sind es

gerade einmal zwei Stunden Fahrtzeit mit

dem Auto, um in die südlichste Gemeinde

Deutschlands zu kommen. Noch schneller

geht es vom Allgäu Airport in Memmingen

aus.

Oberstdorf selbst bietet besonders kurze

Wege: D er Ort lässt sich problemlos zu Fuß

erkunden. Alle notwendigen Sportstätten

und wichtigen Einrichtungen sind vorhanden

und schnell zu erreichen. Naturbelastende,

einschneidende bauliche Eingriffe sind daher

nicht notwendig.

La commune la plus au sud de l’Allemagne

est joignable en deux heures de route de-

puis les aéroports de Munich, de Stuttgart

ou de Zurich. Le trajet est encore plus

court depuis l’aéroport Allgäu Airport de

Memmingen.

Le centre d’Oberstdorf se laisse fa-

cilement découvrir à pied. Toutes les

Right at the outskirts of Oberstdorf lies

one of the world’s most beautiful ski-jump-

ing stadiums. In its compact round, 27,000

enthusiastic spectators can cheer on the

athletes in exciting competitions. As far

as systems engineering is concerned, the

stadium has a lot to offer as well: innova-

tions like combined tracks, which can be

cooled and heated, and a so-called “best

to beat line” with LED technology are only

two of many reasons why Oberstdorf

continuously proves its cutting edge in

professional sports.

The modern cross-country stadium offers

a great view and room for 35,000 spec-

tators, who enthusiastically cheer on the

athletes to excel. The tracks comprise

sections with all levels of difficulty and

thus provide for exciting moments in each

competition. And this is guaranteed, since

our innovative and reliable technical snow

production facilities for the World Cham-

pionship courses ensure perfect quality of

the tracks at all times.

Located in the middle of the Stillach valley,

the Heini Klopfer Ski Flying Hill provides

athletes with the opportunity to fly. An

more than 30,000 enthusiastic spectators

are cheering on the athletes. This interna-

tional top-level promises a breath-taking

atmosphere amidst wonderful mountain

scenery.

Oberstdorf can look back on more than

60 years of competence. Each year, the

Organising Committee with its 1,500

volunteers proves its top-class organ-

isational skills on the occasion of many

sports events. In addition to the annual

Vierschanzentournee (Four Hills Tourna-

ment) and the regular World Cups in sev-

eral Nordic and Alpine disciplines, mainly

the two Nordic World Ski Championships

in 1987 and 2005 have set unforgettable

milestones in ski sports. The two World

Championships with more than 750,000

spectators made Nordic ski sports history:

They celebrated the competitions wildly,

but harmonically, boundlessly and close

to the winners in the stadiums and in the

Nordic Park. We would like to do it again –

because these ski enthusiasts are waiting

for a return of the ski festivals of the large

FIS family, bringing nations and people

closer together.

Oberstdorf fait preuve de compétence

depuis plus de 60 ans. Le comité d’orga-

nisation, avec ses 1 500 volontaires, fait

preuve chaque année lors de nombreuses

manifestations de sa compétence organi-

satrice au plus haut niveau.

Outre la tournée annuelle des quatre

tremplins et les différentes coupes du

monde dans les disciplines nordiques

et alpines, ce sont avant tout les deux

championnats du monde de ski nordique

en 1987 et 2005 qui sont restés des

évènements inoubliables. Ces deux cham-

pionnats du monde avec plus de 750 000

spectateurs sont gravés dans l’histoire du

ski nordique : ils ont fêté les compétitions

joyeusement, harmonieusement, sans

frontières et au plus près des vainqueurs

dans les stades ou au Nordic Park. Nous

aimerions bien renouveler cet évènement

car les passionnés de ski attendent avec

raison une réédition de cette fête du ski

de la grande famille de la FIS réunissant

les nations.
