Letter from the Amal Team"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
These were words that we shared to the inaugural class of Amal Academy Fellows
at their Certificate Ceremony in mid July. Over the two month program, the 28
Fellows proved that they really are a committed group, investing over 120 hours,
participating in 18 half day workshops, and completing 18 challenging projects,
united by the common goal of developing their business and professional acumen
and pursuing their dreams and aspirations.
They also proved that this type of commitment (and teamwork) does in fact lead
to profound change. Perhaps Sadaf Nabi, an Amal Fellow from Shakargarh (rural
Punjab), said it best: "the Amal Fellowship changes me and makes me a person
now who has a firm confidence and bullish attitude to explore this world of
opportunities and make my dreams come true."
Dale Carnegie once wrote that "the life of many a person could probably be
changed if only someone would make him feel important." This was our primary
goal through the Amal Fellowship: to take a first step at changing our Fellows'
lives by making them feel important and giving them tools to act on that
importance.
And we are thrilled to see some amazing progress towards that first step (i.e.,
getting a job): just a little over a month after graduation, over 70% of the
Fellows already have job offers for full time positions or internships.
We're elated to see this type of progress, equally excited to be launching the next
class of Fellows in two weeks, and beyond grateful for the Amal Community who
has made all of this possible.
Although the list is truly endless, it goes without saying that the Amal Fellowship
would not be possible without:
As a small expression of our deep appreciation, we have put together the
following report, in hopes of sharing our gratitude and some of the
learnings/outcomes from the Fellowship. We couldn't be more grateful for your
support, and are striving to return even a fraction of your generosity through the
impact of the Amal Fellowship and beyond.
With profound gratitude and excitement,
The Amal Team
The Punjab Educational Endowment Fund and Punjab University, who hosted
us, helped us get 699 applications, and provided invaluable human resources
The various industry experts from Abacus, Acumen, AISEM, Akhuwat, Allied
Bank, ITU, FINCA, Naqsh, Packages, Standard Chartered, Unilever etc, who
each hosted timeless sessions with the Fellows and continue to give them
tremendous confidence, access and guidance
Our advisors, mentors and investors, who have given us the perfect example
of what it means to believe. support, guide and invest in someone (an
example we hope to pass along through our role with the Fellows)
And all our friends and supporters, who truly are the backbone of Amal
Academy.

Next steps: Fellows' Feedback Although we are humbled and thrilled by these early results, we also realize there is significant opportunity for improvement. In order to
strengthen the next Fellowship (which launches at the end of August) we have collected feedback from current Fellows, including the following:
I would like to share that fornew batch there should bemore visits at differentcompany sites like we didPackages, because Ipersonally think it is greatlearning and awareness ofpractical work.
I would prefer to conductadditional mock interviews inthe presence of professionalsfrom various national andmultinational organizations.Because in this way eachfellow comes to know aboutwhere one needs to improveand where one is good at.
Please provide internship toFellows in your affiliatedcompanies. It is easier toconvert internship into fulltime job than seeking fulltime job... Also, every Fellowshould present in everysession for one minute.
You should have all fellows dovideo creating, not just thosestudents who are absent. As itwas an activity in whichfellows made differentcreative videos and can learnfrom each other better... Alsomake sure you give weeklyfeedback for assignments.
It would be good if whenfellows are presentingsomething and the audiencegives the feedback (which isalways helpful) it would begreat to give that personsome seconds so that he/shecan perform on the givenfeedback and improve it.
Make teams of 3 to 4members with a leader, andassign a project to them sothey can work in groupsother then during thesessions. This way they canexperience leadership andteam play.
