Skateboarding become an underground sport. However, there were three developments that
helped revive the sport and make it less dangerous.
Larry Stevensons invented the kicktail. A surfer named Frank Nasworthy developed a skateboard
with wheels made from urethane, which hugged the street more than the clay wheels ever did. After
the different urethane wheels, Road Rider came out with the first bearing wheel ending the loose ball
bearing. Skateboarding has become a sport that is not any more harmful than football or soccer.
Improvements from the wheels, to the length of the board, have insured riders the safest ride possible.

New World, he inspired the minds, imaginations and greeds of Spanish priests and treasure hunters
alike. These men, who were driven by ambition, patriotism, and religious fervor, conquered ancient
civilizations and their gold and silver mines of untold wealth. Throughout the following decades, ships
traveled back and forth from South America to Spain carrying gold, silver, emeralds, and other
precious commodities discovered in the New World. A mountain alone proved to be the richest silver
mine in history, producing 60 million pounds of gold and silver in just 50 years. Emeralds and pearls
from Columbia and Venezuela poured forth by the shipload. A treasure trove was discovered

various oceans to gather the riches of these lands to bring back to Spain. The Atocha was built in
1620 in Havana, Cuba. TheAtocha was designed not as a treasure fleet, but as a guard galleon for
fleets. However, her sophisticated accommodations made her the choice of nobility, government
officials, and wealthy merchants. As these passengers came aboard for the return voyage back to
Spain, the ship became severely overcrowded with people, gold, silver, jewels, and precious personal
belongings. Wealthy merchants sold linens, porcelain, jewelry, and a variety of other goods in the

On September 6, 1622, just two days after leaving port, the Atocha and five other ships were
swept by gale forces to the Florida Keys. One by one these ships were grounded and wrecked,
including the gallantAtocha: the private galleon Nuestra Senora del Rosario, the Santa Margarita, a
Portuguese slaver, and a small ship serving as the fleets tender. Two black slaves and three seamen
were the only survivors of theAtocha. They described the wreck in harrowing detail: With her
foremast gone and the sails tattered, the high stern castle caught the wind and sped the ship
backwards through the seas. Lifted high on a wave, theAtocha smashed violently down onto a coral
reef, ripping great holes in her hull. The seas are dangerous and scary to most people. Two hundred
sixty crew members and passengers were killed when the ship quickly sank. Only five men, who had
tied themselves to the riggings, were saved.
