Summer Fest is Approaching Sat. August 25th, 5-8pm

There’s still room for you if you would like to join us at this year’s Derby’s Summer Fest. I’ve participated in two so far and they’ve both been a fun afternoon of performing magic for folks (mostly kids) outside in the shade under our Wizard’s Tent. If you want some experience performing some of your routines for laymen, consider coming out next month!

Magic at our Last Meeting

With this month’s meeting falling on the eve of our Independence Day, it was fitting that we pay reverence to the patriotic colors of ‘Old Glory’. Club Vice-President, Ron Margolis a.k.a. ‘The Great Rondini’, led the meeting and also emceed a great evening of magic.

Rondini decked out in patriotic regalia

In true Rondini ‘fashion’, he came decked out from head to toe in patriotic clothing and kicked off the evening with some jokes and various patriotic-themed effects between performers.

Cleo penetrates a balloon with foot-long swords

Cleo Rucker did a great effect which was a combination of a sword basket, restoration and color-change. He inserted a blue balloon into a red, white and blue, wooden box: barely large enough to hold a single balloon. He then proceeded to miraculously push several foot-long, metal swords through the casket without harming the balloon. When the fourth and final sword was being pushed from the back through the front of the balloon, a disheartening ‘Pop!’ was heard and the trick seemed ruined. In true

‘magician makes good’ fashion, he removed the swords, only to reach in and pull out a fully inflated red balloon. Not only was the balloon not damaged, it had changed color as well!

Curtis Waltermire reveals the predicted celebrity

Next up was Curtis Waltermire performing a great version of Bill Abbott's "Celebrity Smart-Ass." If you’re not familiar with it, it's a comedy prediction routine with a twist. Curtis displayed a deck of playing cards shown to have the names of different celebrities written on the backs. A large envelope containing a prediction was placed on a chair and a spectator was invited to come up and sit down on top of it. The spectator then took half of the deck in each hand and eliminated half by throwing one stack of them over his shoulder. This was repeatedly twice more until only a few were left, from which he could select only one. The celebrity name on the card was revealed and the envelope is brought forth containing the prediction. A photo of the celebrity is then revealed as a six week old baby, which really could have anybody! That is the joke part of the prediction, but then mere moments later, the photo is flipped over to actually show a clear headshot photo of the selected celebrity, much to the surprise of the spectator and the rest of the audience.

Bob Groszek performed a card miracle and while the effect and props were themselves not patriotic in nature, the effect did come from the Peter Duffie book called ‘Card Magic USA’; a Steve Dusheck effect called “Mind Reading Svengali”.

Bob performs card miracle from ‘Card Magic U.S.A.’

A deck is thumbed through and a spectator is ask to say stop and is shown the card at that point. This is repeated again with a different spectator. The two different chosen cards are then identified by reading the minds of the spectators. An envelope with a premonition sealed inside was then given to a third spectator and he was allowed to cut the deck. After the cut, he was asked to open and read the premonition. The card cut to correctly matched the premonition!

Last up this evening was Rondini who clearly stuck to the night’s theme; first producing a flag from his tiny Uncle Sam inspired clown hat. He then went into a mis-made flag routine, whereby his three colored silks were placed in a bag in different orders, producing an American flag with improperly colored stripes. On second try, the field was missing its stars because he either dropped or forgot to include the blue silk in the color mixing bag. It wasn’t until he put the silks all in the bag (and in the proper order: red, white, then blue) that the flag finally came out correctly colored. Rondini finished with a fitting tribute to the flag by producing approximately 55 various sizes of ‘Old Glory’ ranging from tiny ones produced from his hands to huge, flagpole sized ones.

Rondini closed the meeting by reading a poem called “I am the Nation” by Otto Whittaker.

Ring 47 has Grand Showing at IBM 2012 Convention in Norfolk

Ring 47 had a great showing at the 2012 IBM Convention in Norfolk, VA. In attendance was club President, Anthony Cortest, along with club members Skip Foley, Jay Temaat and Roger Miller. Not counting the Rings in Virginia or D.C., Ring 47 probably had the highest percentage of attendance, with approximately 10% of our club’s 40 members in attendance. Also, Jay Temaat was one of the youth performers invited to showcase his award-winning stage act at one of the evening’s shows and he is prominently featured in the upper-right corner of the convention poster and program cover.
