chair person or doing the WAIL, Web, or even if you are not really interested,

but are willing to take your turn doing any of these things, please get with me or

a Board member so we can get our slate of officers and appointments together.

Please note your calendars to attend the MIDIV Convention in Tulsa in No-

vember, and also to attend the National Convention in January 2005. National

Convention has made some changes to their agenda so we do not have to spend

Wednesday night at the hotel, but can arrive Thursday morning and still attend

all the convention. This will cut down on the money needed for the hotel, hotel

parking and for food. Hopefully, this change will let the price be more reason-

able and more members will be able to attend. If you have never been or even if

you have been to a MIDIV and/or National Convention these are great meet-

ings. They are informative with new ideas on how to do things. These conven-

tions are NOT just for Racers as I often hear. They have seminars for Solo II,

and rally also. They do not slight the Solo II program for the race program. So,

think about, and then mark your calendars to attend these conventions. We will

have fun and learn things also. We will honor our fellow members for their con-

tributions to our club.

We are going forward with the changes we have made in our Solo II program. The new

drive through Tech is working and the new run/work order seems to be going well also.

We have had to be very strict about the waivers for minors, but that also, seems to be

going well.

Well, sorry it’s taken me so long to get Worker’s Points all straightened out and compiled. My “genius”

method of creating an easy to use spreadsheet turned into a nightmare. So instead I turned to the good old

VLOOKUP function to “get ‘er done”. I think everything is correct.

If you can’t get a trophy by being fast, might as well pitch in and get a Worker’s Trophy. That’s my plan!

June 6th Solo II – Boeing Before I start writing about the event I want to thank everyone who arrived early to help Jared and I set up and start the Solo at 10AM sharp! It was a great team effort! It’s amazing how much work you can get out of people for a few donuts. Also, a big thanks for posting the results and a lot of great pictures on the web site before I even made it home Sunday. I do apologize for the short runoff after the finish, but several of us missed that and it won’t happen again on a course that we design. This being our first event to chair or co-chair I’ll chalk that up as a rookie mistake! Even though we arrived at Boeing at 6AM sharp, Dave and Lu Geis (Early Birds) still beat us by a few minutes. The day started off really nice with morning clouds and a cool breeze. Later in the morning the clouds disappeared and left us with a beautiful sunny day, but not to hot. The course was hot though, in regards to the fast times. But the fast times enabled everyone to get in an extra lap, which I didn’t hear any complaints about. We tried to design a course to reward the talented drivers, and yet leave room for error for those of us who are less skilled. I think everyone had fun and there were only 7 DNF’s and 103 cones out of 322 laps. It also appears that the course evened out the playing field between classes with the eight fastest cars all being from a different class. Dave Geis on his third and final lap won FTD. Unfortunately for Lu, Dave broke the car. :-( FTD for a car with fenders was Ron Williams driving a Honda CRX in CSP. And Tina Williams was only two seconds behind for a 12th overall fastest time. That CRX looks like a lot of fun! I really enjoyed the orange 66 Mustang driven by Mike Bundy. It looked and sounded great and at his expense, provided us with some entertainment at the start of his third lap where the pony bucked and kicked out its heels, knocking down 4 cones. Easy on the spurs Mike. Including Ron and Tina Williams we had several drivers that drove quite a few miles to Boeing. Joe Silva of Manhattan ran an impressive 32.278 in his ES Toyota MR2, and Mark Hill of Lawrence was driving a power steering-belt-spitting Neon. Hopefully Mark gets that belt problem fixed and comes back again. Mark Dilts also from Salina (I think) got some serious oversteer on his first lap in his SO 1981 Chevy PU. After that first lap he reined it in and got his best time of the day on his last lap. We also have several members that drive a pretty good distance to attend every Solo and we appreciate their extra effort. One of the highlights of the day for me was that after much discussion, Jared talked his mom into riding with him on her first-ever parade lap. And then with the finesse of a conman, or a child sweet-talking his momma, Jared actually got her to ride one lap with him. I guess other than a couple of muffled screams she handled it pretty well. Maybe someday we’ll get her to chick school. When that time comes, I will obviously leave the convincing to my more talented sweet-talking son. Jared and I had a great time chairing the Solo and working with everyone. The only downside to the day was that as hard as my wife and I have worked to raise our son right, I think we missed a lesson on manners. I had to remind Jared that it’s not polite to beat dad in his own car. I’ll have to assign him extra chores for that. ;-) Thanks everyone, see you at the next Solo! Kevin Anderson – 91 Miata

June 27th Solo II Strother If we don't count the Polish Autocross (gimmick gymkhana) I chaired at Raytheon circa 1994, then this was my first attempt at laying out an autocross in nearly thirty years. When I moved to the desert southwest in 1974, we made a brief run at reviving the Wichita Region satellite club in Garden City. We did have several autocrosses at Leoti, Liberal, Hugoton, & Garden City, but drawing Solo II entries off the left edge of no-where is difficult. I digress, back to the present. There were sixty some entries at Strother Field, for what was supposed to be Maintaining Momentum or Isn't Lateral Acceleration Fun . However it wound up being The Least Crappy Option . I believe there were at least three of us who did not like the course, but mostly I heard polite pleasant comments. Shifter carts are COOL! Bondurant's web site claims their 125cc, 6-speed shifters corner at 2.5 G's and do 0-100-0 in ten seconds. Hell, I remember when Ken Miles ruled the world with a 427 Cobra by doing 0-100-0 in thirteen seconds. WOW! Of the street legal regulars, the fast guys were still fast. Richard Prestage and Jim French traded FTD with each successive run. Jim must be one hell of a shoe, that blue 'vette doesn't even have a clutch! Go fig-ure. Congrat's to both. GOOD SHOW! The weather/rain/storms that were forecast at a seventy percent probability, didn't show up till long after we were done. They did deter a few entries from coming out to play, however. A group of us sat through a real down-pour at a Pizza Hut in Derby on the way home. Had a chance to visit with new (to Wichita Region) solo participants, David and Julie Avard. They are fast, personable, and loaded with southern California ex-perience. We could learn a lot from them. Hope they join us on a regular basis. I showed up at Strother at 6:00 am. Ready to go, organized, check list, everything. Bruce Sargent was al-ready there. Hal, Kim & Kim arrived a few minutes later with the equipment trailer. As I walked through the weeds hiding the traps on the concrete I panicked, I spaced off organized, the check list, every-thing. With the help of Bruce, Bruce, and Tim, we salvaged the course by using the Least Crappy Option method. It was 10:00 am and time for the Drivers Meeting and the first heat. Lo and Behold, everything was set up and ready to go operational. I was overwhelmed. I don't have a clue how to start thanking everyone individually. THANKS TO ALL! Bill Preheim

Will Huxtable of the Wichita Region announces his candidacy for the

SCCA Board of Directors seat for Area 6. Ballots will be coming in Sep-

tember to a mailbox near you. Please choose to exercise your right to vote.

Will's background includes a variety of positions within the Wichita Re-

gion over the past 20 years. Past offices held include RE, Assistant RE,

Activities Director, Board Member, Assistant Activities Director, Ark Val-

ley Race Group board member, Flag Chief. He is currently serving as the

the Vice Chairman of the Midwest Division.

While Will is best known as a flagger at many of MiDiv's club racing

events, he has also competed as a soloist. Primarily warming tires for fel-

low Wichita region member Greg Laws, he managed to finish 4th in FSP

at the recent Gateway to the Nationals Solotime event in St. Louis. He's

been registrar for the last two Solotime events conducted by the Wichita

Region.

Rally can sometimes be an overlooked activity within our club, but Will's

managed to participate in that program as well. Despite Will's driving

skills, his brilliant navigator (and wife) has managed to lead the team to

several good finishes over a number of years. When not actively rallying,

Will can be counted on to help work checkpoints as well. Anyone remem-

ber the Witches' Ryde and the Huxtable family all dressed in costume?

I know that sometimes the rain gets tiresome but I cannot complain about the temps. Been very lucky at all the events I have attended so far. Went to OKC for the Divisional and had a great time. Great course, wonderful hosts, and a very well run event. And the weather was cloudy but that saved us from frying. Been very busy at work flying all over the country, and working on all my cars. I have seven now, hmmm please someone buy the one in the For Sale section, oh and my boat too please. As a matter of fact will make a great deal on both as a package. Was hoping to go to Hallett this weekend but don’t think that is going to happen now. Soon I will get down there, as someday I hope to pro-gress to be able to participate in a road race. I enjoyed the Solo at Strother, just my kind of course, the grocery getter loves the twisties. I was already to go to Nebraska and sign up for the Open Road Race there, but dang it they were all full up already. Will have to sign up earlier next year. It sounds like the new software is working great in the trailer, at least I did not hear of anything going wrong and only nice things. Still think we need the short range FM like the drive-in so we could hear times on our car radios. Went to a car show at Rock Away Beach near Branson, it was a Rod show and they had over 100 cars there. The one thing that really caught my eye was a car carrier built from scratch out of old pickups shells, it was a mid-engine, four door crew cab, cus-tom interior and paint. (See pix on picture page). I cannot imagine the time it took to build this monster. The Hot Rod Power tour went through near my mom and dad’s, they said traffic was backed up for miles and miles. Next year I would like to get a group of us to attend that, if anyone is interested please let me know. Been working on the Mazda P5 to see if I can learn more about tun-ing a car. In HS we don’t have a lot to work with, but have been researching shocks. I know I need to learn more about tires, pressures, temps, etc. Hmmm maybe we need a clinic for us new guys, any volunteers? This will probably be my last year for HS though, I am either going to modify the P5, and it won’t be eligible, or I may even purchase something else to run, that can also be a road racer. Please no calls trying to sell me your cars, (see above). Just now started to post on the SCCA web boards. Some interesting info there, would anyone be interested in having our own forum, I am sure I could get that hosted for us if there is enough interest. I think it is easier to exchange ideas and comments that way, tell me what you think. Last and not least, I think when I retire, and that may be soon, I might go to Mac College and enroll in auto restoration, man I could save a ton of money. Once again please send your contributions and pictures for the Witches Wail, it has been slim pickings lately, I am getting down to maybe having to post pictures of my vacation soon.
