chance to prove they are beneficial to our program or not. Rally Steering Committee, too, is working well. They have been meeting the 2nd Monday of the month at Café Chicago and have been kicking ideas around for our rally program. They have some checkpoint training and may do some schools on how to rally. Both the committees welcome input from all members. We need mem-ber input, but do not need to pick an event to pieces. If something is right let people know, if something is wrong, let people know and then let the “chiefs” come up with a solution without beleaguering it. If the “chiefs” do not come up with a solution, mention the problem again – let me know – we will work until we get things running smoothly. We are planning a family/picnic social for July. We are going some-where where we can talk, laugh, and play and bring our families. We will eat and in general have a good time. Again, this is YOUR CLUB, join us, make the most of your club. On March 31, 2004 an appointed audit team audited the 2003 financial records of the Wichita Region, SCCA. John Houston, Wichita Region Treasure, pro-

vided the records. The audit team members were Frank Diringer, Charlene Bet-tinger and George Morrison. As this was not an audit of approved accounting

procedures or methods, only proper documentation of checks and deposits were audited. The audit team reviewed the following records: 87 checks, 40 deposits, 12 bank statements, backup receipts and copies of the monthly reconciliation

reports.

The following discrepancies were found:

Check number 7417 did not have a receipt for the expenditure. The check was approved by the Board of Directors of the Region however.

Check number 7295 did not have a receipt for the expenditure. The check was written for the sanction fee of an event. A notation on the

check or a written notation would have been sufficient.

No other discrepancies were found.

The review team compliments the treasurer on the documentation of his re-cords. All records were filed by individual month and in numerical order, mak-

ing the audit a short and smooth operation.

April BOD Minutes Cont. TOPEKA, Kan. (May 7, 2004) -- Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today revised dates for the 2005 SCCA An-nual National Convention, moving the event to Jan. 27-30, 2005. The 2005 Convention will be held at the Westin Crown Center Hotel in downtown Kansas City, Mo. The date was changed to the final weekend of January in order to conflict with as few industry events as possible. Another change will be the schedule of the event, including a later overall start time on Thursday, Jan. 27. The event will be kicked-off with the annual Lead-ership Luncheon at noon. Additionally, the “Secrets of Speed” seminars have been moved to Sunday, Jan. 30 to avoid Saturday seminar scheduling conflicts. “After receiving considerable feedback regarding the last several Conventions, we believe that moving the initial start time from Thursday morning to Thurs-day afternoon will help cut costs for many members,” SCCA VP of Program Development Howard Duncan said. “While some individuals will still travel on Wednesday, many members can use Thursday morning to travel, thus re-moving one night of hotel expense.” Highlighting the 2005 Convention will be the induction of the inaugural SCCA Hall of Fame class Jan. 29 at the annual banquet. Also, even more safety information will be provided and dis-cussed as a follow-up to last year’s eye-popping safety symposium, which as-sembled many of the world’s leading motorsports safety experts.

Look for more information about the 2005 SCCA National Convention to be released throughout the year.

The WRC Lands in Wichita!

Well maybe it wasn’t the World Rally Championship, but it certainly looked like the Wichita Rally Club was in full swing at our first points event of the season at Raytheon on April 4th in the super sandy E lot. The term “getting off line” really hit home out on the northeast part of the course. I had a few minor glitches for my first chaired event, but I thought overall it was a success. I’d like to thank all those that made it possible, especially Hal Larcher, my co-chair Mike Herrick, Dave Geis, all those who shoveled/swept the course and those that were there early to help get us started when we did.

I learned a lot during my first chaired event. One of the biggest things was that the potholes, dips, cracks and large piles of dirt were not on the blank course map I was given. My course designs were basically thrown out during the 7am set up. Instead I relied on Mike Herrick’s experience in setting up course on-the-fly. Between the two of us, I think we came up with a fun and challenging course. A mid-70 second course sure can make for a long day though, but no one better be complaining about their lack of seat time!

It is sure good to see some new faces in the grid and throughout the paddock. I know several members (and non-members) gave out rides to new comers. I think I hooked the 2 people I gave rides to. Hopefully we will see them back at the next event.

After the event was packed up (thanks to all those who helped with that too!!) we invaded Old Chicago yet again for some post race fun. “Bread stuff” and “bread things” sure tasted good after a long day in the parking lot. The beer was just the way I like it too: cold and plentiful. I encourage everyone to join us at the next Post Event at a location of Hal’s choosing. See you there! Tom Urbanek

Well we had our 1st Points event at Raytheon and the weather was great as was the turn out. First I would like to thank Gary Blessing for making it possible for us to hold an event at Raytheon, along with paving the way for us to have 2 more scheduled events at that location this year. Thanks also to Tom Urbanek and Mike Herrick for chairing the event and all those who helped and participated.

Now down to business. We still need chairs for several events this year including two (2) events at Raytheon and one (1) at Strother Field. If you have never chaired an event contact Paul Sherman, Tom Urbanek or myself.

We would be glad to help you and explain what all is involved. If you have done it before and are willing to do it again please look at your calendar and see if you can help the club out and chair another event. The club also needs some-one to take care of the pre - regis-tration.

There are some big changes in the way we plan on running the events starting with the 2nd Raytheon event scheduled for May 30th. We are going to try a new run-work order. If you drive in the 1st heat you will work the 2nd heat. If you drive in the 3rd heat you will work the 4th heat and so forth. This is expected to make things

run a little smother for everyone. It will also require that we all try to transition from driving the course to working the course in a timely manner. If you drive in heat 2 or heat 4 you must have your car tech’d before you begin your work assignment so that you will be able to make that transi-tion as smooth as possible. This new order coupled with the drive thru-tech should makes things run smoother.

The solo steering committee has also decided that we need a Men-tor Program. This program would align those new to Solo to be paired up with those that are ex-perienced to help bring them up to speed more quickly. This pro-gram would include everything from course walking to work as-signments. Please -- if you are will-ing and able to help out with the Mentor Program contact Paul Sherman, Tom Urbanik or myself and we will try to get you hooked up with someone that could bene-fit from your experience. As al-ways check the website for any changes in the Solo schedule.

Common Road Rally Course Following Rules, as used in SCCA Road Rallies will be used with all items within the body of these 'Rules for YOL One '04 Map Rally' taking precedence over any conflicting Official SCCA Road Rally Rules. {It may not hurt you to not know the Official SCCA Road Rally Rules, but it might be a good idea to get a copy for future events & read them.} {I have strived to make this a fun and clear to understand map road rally, this time} 2. For the purpose of this Map Rally, Kellogg/54 do not exist. {its easier that way} 3. Do not enter any one way streets as marked on this map the wrong way at any time. 4. Use descriptions and identifications as identified on this map only, unless a common knowledge {cq} question is specifically asked within the course route instructions. cq's will be the counted as the 'Bonus uestions'.. 5. Follow each Route Instruction until you can execute the next Route Instruction. Should there be a uestion within any Route Instruction, answer it before Executing the Next Route Instruction. Note where you are at the time of answer. 6. Have at least one person assisting in your answers who is not color blind. You only have to match the color code chart to the items in color code on the Map. {Example = The 'Government' color is Dark Purple while the 'Covered Parking' is Black on the color chart} 7. You can only answer questions regarding things that are color coded on the Map. {Except cq items, maybe}. 8. Answer all questions as well as you can. Exactness is less critical than read-a-bility! Pease PRINT all answers. Be accurate, if you can, it does count. Keep your head on straight, if you can! C: Entrant restrictions; 1. You may have as many co-ralliest's with you in your co-base of operations while working on this event's answers. {Please, only serve on one 'Team Co-Base of Operations. Thanks} 2. Only two people may receive credit for each entry into this event. You decide who. 3. Anyone may enter. All are considered Rookies. {experience does not exist for the purpose of this specific event} 4. This is a separate series of Map Road Rallies for your pleasure and does not get you anything except teasing should you score a perfect zero or below. {is that possible?} There is no connection with the normal Road Rally event's. D: No Protests, only courteous suggestions on how to make this event and future Road Rally events {map or not} more Fun! You MAY Volunteer to enter or work any event. E: Scoring procedure for this YOL Map Rally One '04; 1. All entries will begin the event with 100 points in their score. 2. Correct regular question answers will earn 10 points each. 3. Incorrect answers will subtract 10 points each. 4. cq questions answered will be given 5 points each. 5. Correctly answered cq questions will get 10 bonus points each. 6. Incorrectly answered cq questions will cost you 15 bonus points each. 7. Unanswered regular questions will cost you 15 points each. 8. Unreadable question answers will cost you 20 points on both regular and cq questions. 9. Regular points and Bonus points will be considered separately, then combined for overall score. This will form the basis for Leg One {Regular uestions}, Leg Two {Bonus uestions} and Leg Three {Net Total of One and Two Legs} for this Events purposes.

Seven races into the 2004 Mid-Am season is still a little early to think anyone has an unbeatable lead in their class, but some drivers have already run tp some pretty handsome early margins.

Two have already passed the 60-point threshold to be listed on the Driver of the Year chart. Loren Moore in ITE has made all seven races, winning six of them. Down in ITC, Nick Chi-nopulos has made six of the seven, winning five. Moore has three outright wins and Chinopulos two -- the tiebreaker if more than one driver matches up on total points and Mid-Am wins. An “outright” win means he beat everyone in class that day that was on the track, not just those signed up for Mid-Am.

Spec Miata

The phenomenon of Spec Miata just keeps on. Thirty drivers registered so far! We don’t have 30 drivers total in all the Production and GT classes combined. We don’t have 30 in all the Formula classes. Even with SRF, we don’t even have half that in all the SportsRacer classes! So far, Bill Pemberton (Neb) is the only driver to win two races, but he’s only raced three, so Tom Kraft (DMV) leads on the basis of five finishes including one win, but just one point up on Dick Faxon (OzMt) who has one win in four finishes. Pemberton is third in points, ahead of Charles James (NeOk) and the most recent winner, David Steward (MidS), who are both tied.

Improved Touring

Paul Lerman (StL) won at MAM and ran second at Gateway to lead ITS by just three points over Dan Crossett (Ark). In ITA, Timothy Finley (StL) added two wins at MAM and Gateway to take a 5-point lead over two-time winner Steve Bachenberg (KC). Chris Albin (SIll) is atop ITB as usual, but not as comfortably as usual. He’s won four for a 24-point margin over two-time win-ner Patrick Findley (MidS). The two traded wins at the two March races, but Findley didn’t race again until winning May 1 at Gateway. Scott Peterson (KC) picked up a third IT7 win at MAM and continues to lead that class, as of course do Loren Moore (OzMt) in ITE and Nick Chi-nopulos (MidS) in ITC.

Production

Steve Schmidt (KC), Ronald Davis (Kan) and Chuck Leighton (OzMt) wield the early power in the Production classes. Schmidt’s second win in EP came at the MAM round, the same race in which Davis in FP and Leighton GP took their third victories of the year. Also at MAM, Loren Moore (OzMt) became the first SP driver to score points this year. Similarly, Rob Horrell (MidS) remains the only points scorer in HP.

Grand Touring

The only GT-class drivers active in the past month have been Ken Probst (SIll), who won GT5 at Gateway for his second victory of the year, and Cliff Koehler (KC), who won at MAM to stand second in GT2 points behind Dan Guterman (NeOk). Mary Daly (StL) and Ken Raley (KC) remain tied for the GT1 lead.

Sports Racing

Jack Donnellan (Okla) won races at Hallett and Gateway to vault into the SRF lead, but just one point ahead of MAM winner Franklin Stone (KC). The class is so tight among the five driv-ers who have scored points only 12 points separates first from fifth. Ed Smith (StL) scored the first S2000 points this year with an MAM win. Mike McGinley (KC) still tops CSR.

Formula

For whatever reason, the Formula Fords, including Club Fords, have only raced at Gateway so far this year -- several at the two races there and none anywhere else. Bryan Cohn (StL) was runner-up to David Livingston Jr. (MidS) at the most recent race there, but has the points to lead FF over Gary Payne (StL). In Club Ford, James Krispin (StL) won both races to lead Michael Dierkes (StL). Willard King (KC) took a win in F/Continental to move ahead of Patrick Don-nelly (Kan) in the standings. Phil Gumpert got his second F/Atlantic win at Gateway. Nick Grapsas (StL) used the Gateway race to score the season’s first FV points.

Showroom / Touring / American Sedan

The most action has been in SSC, where Paul Sherman (Wich) outran Candy Gerber (Neb) at MAM, but a Sherman DNF earlier in the year leaves Gerber still in the points lead. Sharon McBride (Okla) made the first SSB noise so far at Hallett. Scott Bettinger (Wich) scored an AS win there but Jeff Kopp (KC) still leads the standings. Ditto Mike McGinley (KC) in T1.

Two-time winners Bill Denton (MidS) in ITS, Timothy Finley (StL) in ITA, and Chris Al-bin (SIll) in ITB hold the points lead in those three classes. The other four are a bit more con-tested after three Tour races.

Larry Orr (MidS) leads ITC over Nick Chinopulos (MidS) after the Greek DNF’d at Gateway. Loren Moore (OzMt) has won two in ITE to lead, but Jeff Demetri (Neb) got the MAM win. Sandwiched between them is John Waldbaum (Neb).

Mark Jeffrey (Ark) is the only IT7 driver to race twice and so leads Scott Peterson (KC) and Nadeem Bari (StL) who won the last two races. It’s almost identical in Spec Miata, where Gate-way winner Dick Faxon (OzMt) took the lead over David Harber (MidS) and Bill Pemberton (Neb), who each won his only start.

From the Editor

It seems to me that there are more and more people showing up at the Solo’s. This is great news, and also I noticed that many of them are the y ounger enthusiast of motor sports. I was hoping that some racer crew would invite the editor for a ride, or at least maybe a photo op on car prep, etc. Be glad to come assist on a race day, just give me plenty of no-tice. I really want to learn more about that part of our club, and I am sure many others do also. Please send me ideas for stories, or if you have any yourself don’t be shy. I don’t want to hear complaints about your newsletter being biased towards Solo if you don’t contribute. I am so overwhelmed the next couple of months, with car stuff, my 25th anniver-sary, my mom & dad’s 50th, and my oldest daughter graduating high school, and getting her ready for college is taking it’s toll on me. The only fun part is shopping for a new car for her to take her away. Did I mention that Evolution School was a blast, and that it was very much worth the price of admission. Thanks to Rob for hosting us, and also for helping out with my tire dilemmas. I saw several SCCA members in MAC for the C.A.R.S. show at the college, had a nice sunny day for the event and lot’s of cars there. Took the tour of the college’s restoration building which had all the cool tools you need to bring back cars to life. If you know any budding high school kids looking for a different career and are mechanically inclined or just love cars, have the check out this program. Was told average salary for graduates working in someone else’s shop was around $35.00 an hour. Coming up or me more Solo, a few ore car shows, and more work on J-Lo my 71’ Grandville. We won’t make the Hot Rod Power Tour this year, maybe next.
