Poge 2 THI POI MTH March 12, 1970

" W hen grey hairs grow silent, then young heads grow venturous." - Job Throckmorton 1587 Letters To The Editor

Editor Olfers

Exp lanation La.al week the POINTER d~voted lhe lower right quar

ter .or page .even to an advertisement which offered legal a.sa1atance to any WSU coed who felt ahe had been "aexually uacd" by any aegment of the established Uni• n •raity population.

The ad wa.a placed ln the POINTER u a public eervlce a t the request of ae,·era.l students. The otrer wa.a since~ and s till atands.

Unfortunatel)'i the advert:laement wa.a quite s mblguoua and appeared to be either a joke or a reckless "yeUow " smear attack on the Unlveraity. Many of the people In· eluded in the general categories l~ted In the ad were deeply otrended by the ad'a content. The POI?\'TER apologiz.ea for any affront , however unintended, to anyone who read the ad \·ertiatment.

A n explanation of aome or the terms used In the ad ma)· be in order. The fourth paragraph or the ad atatn, in part . that "We are fully awa~ or a hiatory or otrcriaea which have dominated the au baurlace of thla Univenlty."

The term "fully aware" wa.a conatrued to mean that the authors of the ad were prepared to bring formal charges backed by substan tial proof. Thia is not the cue at preaenL

The term "a history or. otren&ee which have dominated the subsurface • . . " Implied that &exua1 misconduct ia ram1mnt among·the lea~ers or the Univeraity community. In fact. the statement is not founded on one shred of hard fac t and thua conatitutes the moat ir reaponsible line in the ad,·er~isement.

The ad went on to imply that coeda were being "coerced" into aexu al invoh•ementa. The intention or the coercion statement wa, only to point out that a public educator might find that, In some case,, he could take advantage of the Influence and prestige of his poaition. No implication wa.a intended that any educator ever did or necea· sarily would abuse hla influence or position.

The POINTER served only a.a a contact point for the group who would help anyone .,.,.ho aought It. Thia was the reason that the POINTER'S name appeared at the bottom of the ad.

In any event, the POI?,,'TER, more apeciflcally, the editor asaumea any and all reaponaibllity for anything with the paper's name attached to it. The advertieement wa.a made In good faith and with all aincerity. It wu Intended · as an otl'er of help, not a.a a lweeplng charge against the moral climate of the Unive.nity. •

Again, we are sorry for any inau1t or mleleading im· plicat.ions which may ha\·e stemmed from the adverlilement in question.

We applaud the facu1ty action on the matter. The program still needs approval by the Board of Rcgenta and . the Coordinating Council on Higher F.ducation. -Let ua hope they will appro\'e it, ao the couraee can begin next fall. ...

One of the unique features of the program la that the program will be directed by three atudenta and three faculty membe.ra. This la to be commended also.

The only probelm that we see with the peace studies program is why is it neceeaary ? We thought weU-rounded, liberal uni.veraity education waa all that wa.a neceeaa.ry to live ~acefu11y with one's brother.
