HistoryThe company was incorporated on 29 December 1945, in Mumbai by Mohamed Premji as

'Western India Vegetable Products Limited', later abbreviated to 'Wipro'. It was initially set up

as a manufacturer of vegetable and refined oils in Jalgaon, Maharashtra.

In 1966, after Mohamed Premji’s death, his son Azim Premji returned home from Stanford

University and took over Wipro as its chairman at the age of 21.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the company shifted its focus to new business opportunities in the

IT and computing industry.

In 1977 IBM was asked to leave India, Wipro entered the information technology sector.

In 1979 Wipro began developing its own computers. This was the first in a string of products that

would make Wipro one of India’s first computer makers.

In 1980 Wipro moved in software development and started developing customized software

packages for their hardware customers. This expanded their IT business.

Page 9: Wipro Company_By Parakramesh Jaroli

Net Income & EPS Growth

An ideal company should have steady rising net income (Bottom line) and EPS growth. If the net

income growth rate is decreasing, it also impacts EPS growth and drags it down. It is stated in

terms of percentage change from the previous year.

The EPS growth rate should closely follow the Net Income growth rate but in some cases it does

not because of share dilution. When the company issues more stock or when debentures and

preferred stock are converted to common stock or employees and others exercise their stock option

the total number of shares increase which dilutes the EPS and your ownership.
