Winter Sleepout

On Thursday, 22nd August, 94 Year 11 and 12 students returned to the College in the evening, armed with only a cardboard box, a sleeping bag, a pillow and a water bottle. These were all the possessions that were permitted for the evening, as we gave our senior students a sample of what a night sleeping rough on the streets would be like.

The night comprised of security checks, setting up their ‘homes’ in the undercroft, a soup-kitchen dinner scenario, watching a powerful documentary on the current crisis of homelessness in Australia, and a first-hand account of what finding yourself without a home can be like, as shared by our guest speaker, Paula Angel. Some of the students found themselves waking to the Clarkson Police at a little after 3am, as they came to make sure that none of our ‘homeless’ were disturbing the peace or needing ‘move on notices’, as is a common occurrence on the streets. A huge thank you to staff who assisted to make this event a highly successful one, helping to open our students’ eyes and hearts to the plight of the members of our community that find themselves without somewhere safe and secure to call home. “It was such a pleasure to be able to attend the Winter Sleepout. The experience we had was very meaningful and heart-warming, experiencing a night of homelessness and how it feels to be out in the cold with an enormous amount of rain and wind. We watched an episode of SBS’s ‘Filthy, Rich and Homeless’. It was a very touching and significant episode, as we saw a number of different homeless people with all different backgrounds and stories of how they got into the position they are in today. We realised that the people out on the streets are no different to any one of us; they are the same as every other human being. We were very appreciative to be able to experience this with a number of different people. The night was definitely one to remember and reflect on.” ~ Cherry Black and Keia Ball, Year 11. “After the Sleepout I realised how hard it is to be homeless and not having a home to go to, or a family to see, and not knowing what or when you’re going to eat, as well as not knowing what will happen during the night, as we experienced with the Police at 3am. Seeing the documentary was touching. Not everyone has the same story and many people don’t pay attention to how big the homelessness issue is and how common it is in our society today. We also listened to a person who struggled with homelessness in her life, Paula. She explained to us her story of being homeless for two years. It was heart-warming and eye opening, and made me aware of how hard it is to be homeless and to have people judge you, not knowing your story and why you are in that situation. This experience has opened my eyes on homelessness and I now know that I can make a change by just having a chat with them knowing that it’ll make their day.” ~ Tazara Kelly Year 11. City to Surf

Page 3: Winter Sleepout - imcc.wa.edu.au

At 6.30am on Sunday, 25th August, 24 Year 11 students arrived at City Beach Oval to start preparing the Marathon Recovery Tent for the arrival of the 42km runners. It was a chilly start to the day, but the students worked tirelessly from that point on, sorting bags, serving food, allocating ‘Finisher’ t-shirts and the biggest task, distributing water non-stop to around 600 runners. Our students engaged with runners, congratulating them on their achievements, listening to their stories, and just offering a smile and assistance in whatever way they could. The students were incredible ambassadors for the College, many of whom have already asked if they can volunteer again next year. Thank you to Mrs Pearce and Miss Thomson who assisted on the day. ‘City to Surf was honestly the best experience. We were able to see participants cross the finish line with the biggest smiles on their faces. It is something I will never forget.’ ~ Traci Grimes, Year 11.

Author Visit – Norman Jorgensen In the continued celebration of Book Week, the College was able to secure the services of Norman Jorgensen, a Western Australian author, who has published 14 books over the last 15 years, including In Flanders Fields, which Norman explored with the Year 8 students. This highly acclaimed book explores the terror and sheer devastation of World War I.

Page 4: Winter Sleepout - imcc.wa.edu.au

Norman spent time with Year 7 & 8 students, speaking about the importance of real-life experiences that can spark a child’s interest in the reading process, which leads to better writing. Norman also presented awards to four students who have demonstrated their drive to read, an enjoyment that is immeasurable. The Awards were presented to Year 7 students, Charlotte Callaghan and Eknoor Sandhu, and Year 8 students, Katherine Wagenaar and Abigail Watson. Our Year 9 students were also able to chat during lunch about their interest in reading and where ideas stem from. Year 8 student, Abbie Christie was interested in the book The Wrecker’s Revenge and was intrigued by what happens in the story. It does peak ones’ interest. Feel free to visit your Library to borrow a book. All of Norman’s books are available for loan from the Library. Mr Ned Bryant Head of Library

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

This week at the Festival our woodwind and brass students travelled to Zenith Music, in Claremont, for their instrumental solos. Students from Years 7-12 performed pieces from a range of genres and styles, receiving fantastic reports and feedback. We also had our very first violin solo with Year 8 student, Maxwell Johnson, performing at Zenith Music.

Page 5: Winter Sleepout - imcc.wa.edu.au

This week we received notification that Jac Donnelly, Year 12, was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for his drum solo performance last week. Year 9 students, Connor Bowler and Lachlan Trehearn, also received Certificates of Merit for their guitar solo performances last week. Congratulations to all. Next week is the final week of performances and we encourage everyone to attend and support the students. Tickets for all events can be purchased at the door. Please see the list of events below. Year 12 Outdoor Education – Ningaloo Expedition

The Year 12 General Outdoor Education Class has just returned from an epic trip on the Ningaloo Coast. They kayaked and snorkeled for three days, putting into practice their leadership, environmental and camping skills along the World Heritage-listed coastline.

Page 7: Winter Sleepout - imcc.wa.edu.au

Over the three days they observed many animals in their natural habitat, including sea turtles, reef sharks, dolphins, humpback whales and tropical species of fish. They were able to camp on the beach in the most picturesque locations. The memories will be with all involved for years to come. A big thank you to Mr Bright who assisted with the leadership, logistics and bus driving, as well as Capricorn Sea Kayaking. Mrs Karolina Lasscock Outdoor Education Teacher

School Climate Survey

To respond to the College 2019 Parents and Caregiver Survey, parents please visit https://www.nsipartnerships.com.au/ and enter code IM2019P in the Start Questionnaire field As mentioned in previous week’s newsletters and in the end of Semester One Report Letter, all parents and caregivers are invited to participate in a survey about our College’s climate. Similar surveys are being administered to staff and students to enable us to capture a community snapshot. All responses are confidential and will be used for school improvement purposes. Completion of the survey is on a voluntary basis. Your confidentiality To protect your confidentiality all surveys are anonymous. All answers go directly to the National School Improvement Partnerships, where the results are analysed for your school. Answers from individual surveys will NOT be reported back to the school. Staff of the National School Improvement Partnerships staff are bound by a Code of Ethics and follow strict professional conduct. How to complete the survey You will be asked whether you are completing the survey for an individual child or as a family. If the experiences of your children are similar, then responding once will suffice. If, however, your children are experiencing very different learning environments then you might want to answer separately for each child. The survey contains statements about practices which could take place in this school. For each statement, you are asked to indicate how often the statement takes place. There are no 'right' or 'wrong' answers. Your opinion is what is wanted. Please be sure to answer all questions. Some statements in may be fairly similar to other statements. Don't worry about this. Simply give your opinion about all statements.

Please visit https://www.nsipartnerships.com.au/ and enter the access code IM2019P

Your time and consideration are much appreciated. Mr Matthew Byrne Assistant Deputy Principal Year 9
