IMCC Newsletter 14 Friday, 24 th May 2019 ATAR French Camp On the weekend of 12th-14th May, the Years 11 and 12 French students were fortunate to stay the night at Le Manoir and have an authentic French experience at French Topics & Co in Carramar, run by an exceptional teacher, Laurence. For two days, we were immersed in the culture and language, and no English was spoken. This Camp was an amazing opportunity to practise, not only our speaking and aural skills, but our writing as well, with the help of three teachers. Some workshops were challenging, for example I had to speak French to five different examiners for 50 minutes. The Camp was most valuable as my language skills significantly improved over the course of the weekend. We enjoyed three delicious French meals a day, had a French cooking class, played various games and watched a French movie. We all shared many laughs and became closer as a class, interacting with the farm animals of the property and roasting marshmallows by the fire. ATAR French Camp

On the weekend of 12th-14th May, the Years 11 and 12 French students were fortunate to stay the night at Le Manoir and have an authentic French experience at French Topics & Co in Carramar, run by an exceptional teacher, Laurence. Thank you to Mademoiselle Harrison, Laurence and my peers for a wonderful weekend, where we learnt valuable skills for our upcoming exams and had the opportunity to experience a very French weekend. Amy Bester Year 12 French ATAR Student

Year 10 Biological Sciences Excursion Currently studying ecology and the delicate balance that exists in ecosystems around the world, the Year 10 Biological Sciences elective was fortunate to apply the theory they had been learning in class to the real world at the Perth Hills Discovery Centre. Students engaged in a study of the plant and animal life at the reserve, and the scientific processes involved in collecting data to maintain the safety of such a fragile ecosystem. The valuable skills of data logging being learnt, coupled with the breathtaking natural beauty of the reserve, allowed students to gain a greater appreciation of the subject, and of the scenery Western Australia has to offer. Working in the Jarrah Forrest of the Discovery Centre provided the opportunity to attempt invaluable fieldwork, setting the scene for those wishing to pursue any Science related course, particularly biology and marine science, in the senior years at the College. Mr Stuart Whelan Science Teacher

Author Visit

On Wednesday, 22nd May, the Year 11 and 12 English ATAR students were invited to an after-school seminar run by Perth author, Ms Kate McCaffrey. Kate focused the seminar on our students’ impending Composing Sections of their exams, next week. The session was incredibly informative and helpful for both students and staff alike. Kate has provided the students with some inspiration for their narrative or persuasive pieces they will be writing next week. It was wonderful to see almost 50 students attending this invaluable seminar in their own time after school. Mr Kieran Parkes English Teacher

Dance Excursion

On Thursday, 16th, the Year 10, 11 and 12 Dance students attended The Line, a performance by Co3, held at the State Theatre Centre of WA. Co3 is the state’s premier contemporary dance company. This was an important experience for students as it explored cultural and social issues relevant to Australia’s Indigenous people. The Line explored “boundaries” put on the Indigenous traditional owners of the land. These boundaries are defined not only by a physical area in Perth called the prohibited area, but also boundaries between community, people, races, genders, ethnicities, political beliefs, religions and philosophies of aboriginal people. The students really enjoyed their experience at the theatre and are thankful for the opportunity to attend the show. Grace Busuttil Year 11

The Hurricanes The Hurricanes Cheerleading sleepover was held on 17th-18th May, where we learned new stunts and tumbling skills, and started putting the routine together for this year’s competition season.

On Friday, we started with Elite Stunting skills that involved hard work and concentration. Then we set physical and mental goals together, focussing on what we really want to achieve this year. We played team games to bond with our team-mates and work on communication skills. Saturday was spent putting together our ‘pyramid’ for competitions and cleaning our tumbling skills – please clink on the video link to see us in action https://www.dropbox.com/s/0zttny0s8sfbqei/IMG_7261.MOV?dl=0 Everyone had an amazing time and we left the sleepover feeling like a team. We are really excited for this year’s competition season. Madeleine Ash Cheerleading Captain

Year 10 Soccer Academy Excursion Students in the Year 10 Soccer Academy had the opportunity to attend multiple Football workshops on their excursion this week. Students travelled to two local businesses exploring career options involving the world of football.

The first session with The Football Centre saw students involved in a training session with co-owners Mr Dean Evans and Mr Reece Vittiglia. Students then had the opportunity to listen to the story behind the creation of The Football Centre, where they turned an Osborne Park warehouse into a training facility for athletes, kids and everyone in between. Our afternoon included strength and conditioning sessions with the Pickering brothers who created their own business name, 2Halfs Football. Shane and Dean Pickering build athletes on and off the ball. Students took part in activities such as muscle activation, plyometrics and muscle recovery. Shane and Dean shared their story of why they became involved in strength and conditioning, and set up their own business. The day was a great success with students enjoying themselves and opening their eyes to some career pathways. Miss Shawn Billam Soccer Academy Coordinator
