A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR TRAINING AND SKILLSWelcome to the CAE Winter Short Course Guide.

The Victorian Government is building the Education State – boosting access to education for all Victorians so they can get the jobs they want whilst securing our state’s economic and social future.

There are lots of exciting happenings at the CAE this year, including the opening of the Victorian Government Skills and Jobs Centre and new courses starting at the Lilydale Lakeside Campus.

It may be hard to believe, but the CAE has been providing interesting courses for Victorians for nearly 70 years. It has been a bastion of local learning for adults and young adults alike, shaping the cultural and educational landscape of Melbourne and its surrounds.

As a Learn Local provider, the CAE has always advocated for those who love learning and want to continually challenge themselves, by developing new and innovative courses that reflect the community’s interests.

Some of CAE’s students have been doing courses with the CAE for over 50 years, enjoying the social benefits and mental stimulation that learning provides to individuals and the community. Continual learning opens the mind, helps us adapt to change, enriches lives and keeps minds agile. It is an important part of a well‑functioning and skilled society.

The Victorian Government is proud to support the CAE in its constant endeavours to develop unique learning opportunities for Victorians from all walks of life.

With hundreds of short courses to consider, ranging from vocational training and recreational learning to an extensive catalogue of languages, I encourage you to explore what’s on offer in this guide and open yourself to new and exciting opportunities at the CAE.

Linocut — linoleum is not just for floors!

Linoleum or lino is the durable, rubbery floor covering that has been gracing kitchen floors since the turn of the 20th Century. But, this versatile and hardwearing material has a secret — it’s been masquerading for years as an artist! That’s right folks, welcome to the wonderful world of linocut.

Linocut is a form of printmaking. It first surfaced as an artistic technique in Germany in the early 1900s. While it was initially viewed as a cheap alternative to block printing with wood and metal, it quickly gained a notable following when big‑name artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso started working with the material.

In simplified terms, linocut involves sketching and cutting patterns out of lino to create intricate designs that can then be transferred to paper and other materials. Although, you don’t need to be Picasso to get the hang of it, taking a class in the basics of linocut is a good idea given the need to work with sharp implements.

If you want to unleash your inner Picasso, we’ve got you covered with our Linocut for Beginners course. Sign up today at cae.edu.auSource: The history and process of linocut print: from paupers to Picasso | Great North Art Show (online)

Dickens: Dombey & Son: Paul’s Childhood The first 16 chapters are characteristic of Dombey and Son; a fine introduction for those not familiar with Dickens, and a pleasure for those who are. HOW TO LEARN A LANGUAGE

1 Set a goal What do you want to accomplish and how are you going to go about it?

2 Make a planStart out with a plan, even if you need to modify it later on.

3Jump inWe learn by making mistakes even in our native language, so

don’t be afraid of making them in a new one.

4 Build your vocabularyWhen learning a new word, use it in a sentence rather than

just writing it down with it’s translation.

5Enjoy yourselfThink of things that you enjoy doing in your native language and find

a way to start doing them in your new language.

6Take responsibility for your learningLearning a language does take work. Books,

teachers, podcasts, homework and more are resources available to you. Use them to build your knowledge.

7 ListenThe more you expose yourself to a language the more familiar it

becomes, and the easier it is to speak it properly: Movies, TV, music are all readily available to expose your ear to a language.

8Get talkingTraveling is a great way to reward yourself for learning a language, but

it’s not necessary to learn a language. Find a partner you can practice with. Find a fun way to practice ‑ write a song, or a poem, see a film, attend a cultural festival and speak with other festival‑goers.

Kentaro Shimoda CAE LANGUAGE TEACHER

1. Please tell us a little about your teaching philosophy and experience:

I have had a very simple teaching philosophy “Tanoshiku wakariyasuku!” which means learning in a fun and “easy to understand” way.

2. What do you teach at the CAE and how long have you been with us?

I have taught Japanese at the CAE for about 4 and a half years.

3. What do you like most about teaching at the CAE?

Meeting people who have a love of Japan and Japanese culture. It makes me feel proud of the country I was born and grew up in. Also, meeting people who have a passion for language learning.

4. Why do you think the CAE is such an important part of the Melbourne community?

The CAE is such a unique school where anyone can learn anything at any time!

5. How many languages do you speak?I have to say only Japanese and English. I learnt French as my second foreign language at university back in Japan. I’ve also learnt a bit of Chinese, Korean, Indonesian and Thai.

6. What’s your top tip for learning a language?Ahh, I can talk about it for hours and hours… It would probably be “practice it not too seriously, but REGULARLY!”.

7. Do you ever get confused and end up conversing in multiple languages at the same time?

Always! Often I say “Aach! Machigatta!! (Oops, I made a mistake)” to myself during my lesson. My students think “???” at first but they quickly come to understand what’s happening because I say it so often.

8. What’s the most embarrassing language error you’ve ever made and what happened?

I have so many of these! However, when I think about the following instance, I still get a red face. During my homestay program in Canada (it was my first experience overseas), I always said “I am NICE” instead of “I’m fine” when people asked me “How are you?”. I was so moved because everyone always smiled so kindly at me anytime I answered their question, without knowing they smiled at me for a different reason. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes — it’ll become a fun memory!

9. What super power would you choose if you could choose one?

I don’t think I need any because I’ve already got one! Please come to my class and find it out!

10. The best coffee in Melbourne can be found at…?

Flinders lane and Degraves Street!

11. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

My blood type is Type O. My star sign is Virgo. And my Chinse zodiac sign is Horse. That makes me easy‑going, critical and delicate. Make any sense?Thank you for reading my profile. Hope to see you in my class.

I liked the mix of writing, speaking, exercises and listening. I really enjoyed the 15 minute session on Japan in the middle. The teacher is very encouraging and fun.

Carolina BodinCAE LANGUAGE TEACHER

1. Please tell us a little about your teaching philosophy and experience:

I like to think of learning and teaching as being all about understanding how to communicate with people. I’m all about helping my students reach their goals and showing them how knowing a foreign language can help them feel more connected to the rest of the world.

2. What do you teach at the CAE and how long have you been with us?

I teach Spanish and Swedish and I’ve been at CAE since 2011, so about 5 years now.

3. What do you like most about teaching at the CAE?

I really like the people you meet in your classes! Everyone has an interesting story to tell and different reasons for learning a language. As a teacher the best feeling is to see students returning for more than one course, as you really get a chance to build some sort of relationship with people that way.

4. Why do you think the CAE is such an important part of the Melbourne community?

I think CAE is important because it offers such a range of courses and areas of study. The Languages Centre is excellent, not only due to the wonderful staff we have, but also because we offer such a wide range of options.

5. How many languages do you speak?

I speak Swedish, Spanish, English and a tiny bit of Arabic.

6. What’s your top tip for learning a language?

Don’t be afraid to use your language skills, no matter how minor they are. If all you can say is ‘hello’, well, say that. You’ll get a different reply each time so you can start building your vocabulary from the responses you get. Also, keep in mind that learning a language takes time and a lot of practise.

7. Do you ever get confused and end up conversing in multiple languages at the same time?

I have certainly managed this quite a few times. There have been times I’ve found myself speaking in one language, while also trying to read a book in another, and then suddenly realising that I’m replying to the conversation in the language of the book. I also have a bad habit of swearing in multiple languages when I get frustrated. It helps, I promise!

8. What’s the most embarrassing language error you’ve ever made and what happened?

Oh my, where do I even begin? An example I often share with my students, is the Swedish word for chef which, when accidentally inserted into an English conversation, changes what you’ve said to something rather crude that has absolutely nothing to do with preparing food.

9. What super power would you choose if you could choose one?

I’d like to be like the Babel Fish in Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books, the tiny creature you insert into your ear who translates every single word spoken in any language into something you can understand.

10. The best coffee in Melbourne can be found at…?

I am a tea drinker myself. I’d say for a special occasion, go for the 3 o’clock afternoon tea at the Windsor. It’s not something you’d do regularly as it’s quite fancy and costs a bit, but it is well worth a visit at least once.

11. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Come learn a language at CAE. We’re a good bunch here, and you’ll have a lot of fun. I promise!
