Dear Members and Friends,

As we enter this celebratory time of the year, I think about the whirlwind that has been 2010 and I dream excitedly about all the possibilities of 2011. The excitement never stops at the Shimon & Sara Birnbaum JCC …our membership thrives and our programs and facilities constantly grow and improve to meet your needs. You, our members, are the most precious asset of our JCC – you are the Community in JCC and we look forward to your continued enjoyment and involvement at the JCC in 2011.

Our JCC gift to you in 2011 is value added in all membership categories --- at 2010 rates.Becauseweunderstandthenecessityandimportanceoffitness, culture, and JCC enrichment in your lives, our Board and staff want to ensure your ongoing membership at the JCC. For those of you not yet Star members, don’t miss the unique opportunity to upgrade during December 2010. Remember that in JanuaryweareintroducingLesMillsBodyPumpforyougroupfitnessaficionados!Theentiregroupfitnessschedule--includingmoreSpinningandZumbaclasses--is constantly developing and expanding to meet your changing needs. By the way, we deeply appreciate all who formally participated in our Benchmarking Survey in October…Thank you for a great response! It is through member feedback that we can continue to plan programs and services for our community in a more effective way.

Another major initiative for the JCC is more directed outreach to the residents ofHunterdonCounty.Ourwishistofulfillourmissionofservingmoreofthecommunities of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties in meaningful ways. Our intent is to engage more campers for Camp Ruach, children in the Blaustein Early Childhood Center, Seniors for our nutrition and recreation programs and people of all ages for our cultural and community programs. If you are among those living in Hunterdon and have thoughts about more effective modes of outreach, please contact me to discuss how you can get involved.

Most exciting is our current Swim & Trim Capital Campaign – raising funds to dometheout-doorpool,expandthefitnesscenter,andupdateourlockerrooms.These changes are the direct result of your feedback and information. As members oftheJCC,your“homeawayfromhome”,youwillbenefitdramaticallybythesechanges in the near future. If you are able, please consider participating in this very exciting next phase for the JCC by making a pledge to the Swim & Trim Campaign.

So as we look forward to the winter snow and wind, at the JCC, we are planning forterrificprogramminginJanuaryaswellasSummerandtheFallof2011.Registration for Camp Ruach is robust and our “state of the art” full day childcare and nursery school programs are touring new JCC kids and their parents every day.As the holiday season begins, on behalf of the staff and the leadership of the JCC, it is my honor to wish all of you the very best for 2011. May the Chanukah candles burn brightly for us all and may they set the standard for light and hope for our entire community.

Children ages 7-11 are permitted in the pool provided that a parent remains in the pool area. Children ages 12 and up are permitted to be alone in the facility. Thank you for helping us keep our pools safe and secure.

How do I choose the right swim class/level?If you are unsure of a child's level, you can bring your swimmer in to be tested or contact the Aquatics Direc-tor for questions. Can I observe lessons? While we recognize that parents are as thrilled about the progress of their children as the students are, we re-spectfully ask that parents remain seated on the 6 foot side of the pool bleachers for the duration of your child’s lesson.Unlessspecified(suchasaparent/childswimclass)parentsarenotpermittedinthewaterwiththeirchildren as this is a distraction to the group as a whole. Music TogetherMusic Together classes are based on the belief that music is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that children canlearntosingintune, keepabeat, andparticipatewithconfidenceandpleasureinthemusicofourculture, providedthattheirearly environment supports such leaarning. By emphasizing actual music instead of passively receiving it from CDs or television. Integral to our program is the idea that young children respond best to music when surrounded by those with whom they have a close bond. Consequently, the active participation of parent and care givers is an essential part of the rich musical environment we create. Classes are held Mondays, 1pm Tuesdays, 6:30pm Wednesdays, 9:15am and 10:15am

Program to follow lunchUn-Expectedly Eighty: And Other Adaptations

What does it mean to be eighty? New York Time’s best seller and award winning writer Judith Viorst is seeing the world with new eyes—not because of revelations, but because of a successful cataract operation. All ages come and enjoy Emmy award winning and Picture Book Hall of Fame inductee, Judith Viorst, as she describes the virtues, victories, frustrations, and joys of being an octogenarian. Un-Expectedly Eighty: And Other Adaptations humorously explores how Judith Viorst got to be a “three-desserts” grandmother (“Just don’t tell your mom!”), how memory fail-ure can keep you married, and her hopes for the Afterlife (in which she doesn’t believe, but if it does exit, her sister-in-law better not be there with her).

Program to Follow LunchBarney Frank: The Story of America’s Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman

The road Massachusetts native Congressman Barney Frank took to win his position was anything but simple. In his biography Barney Frank, Stuart Weisberg tells the struggles Barney Frank lived through to become only the 2nd Jewish Congressman ever from Massachusetts. Spend an evening with Weisberg as he tells the story of a man who was able to overcome prejudice and criticism and accomplish his goals, all while remaining proud of his Jewish heritage.

Thursday, February 10th 7:00 pm The 188th Crybaby Brigade: A Skinny Jewish Kid from Chicago Fights Hezbollah

What’s a nice American Jew doing in a place like this? So asks Joel Chasnoff – well-known stand-up comedian and writer- as he sweats, grunts, and rolls his eyes through a military tour in the Israeli Army in THE 188TH CRYBABY BRIGADE. Surrounded by a platoon of mama’s boys and crybabies carrying loaded weapons, this admitted peace-loving, left-leaning, lactose-intolerant Jew from the suburbs invites the reader to share his journey from gung-ho, would-be warrior to disillusioned soldier who in the end discovers he isn’t really a Jew at all. Come laugh and learn as Joel Chasnoff presents a disturbingly hilarious look at life inside the Israeli Army.

Modern Jews Engage the New Testament: Enhancing Jewish Well-Being in a Christian Environment

"Jews, Jesus & 'Gospel Dynamics.” Despite the New Testament’s impact on Jewish history, virtually all Jews avoid learning its underlying “DYNAMICS” — thereby leaving Christian friends perplexed as to why Jews are wary of the “Good News.” Modern Jews Engage the New Testament is a ground-breaking, solution-oriented book by Rabbi and Professor Michael J. Cook, the only rabbi in America with a Full-Professorial Chair in New Testament. All religions come learn and enjoy Michael J. Cook as he leads Jews out of anxieties plaguing them throughout history and enlightens Christians to alternative ways of processing New Testament texts on Jews and Jesus, Paul, Judas, Pilate, Caiaphas, and others.

A three-session exploration of Jewish spirituality, Ethics and Community Values It is for anyone who wants to learn about the foundations of Jewish tradition and is seeking an entry into Jewish Life.

Open to anyone who is interested in learning about Judaism--Jewish or not!!
