Parent and Tot Swim This is the exciting first dip into the pool for children and we make it special for everyone involved! Parents bring their children (ages 6 months to 3 years) into the pool for a fun lesson with one of our experienced instructors. Sing songs, dance in the water and more. We offer Parent and Tot on Sundays in two age groups: 6 months-2 years and 2-3 years. Swim diapers are required.

Starfish: Level 1 Your children will learn basic swimming skills in this fun, no pressure class. They’ll practice blowing bubbles, floating and kicking.

Seahorse: Level 2Ready for the next level! Children learn important skills such as beginner front and back crawl, floating, glides (prone and supine), seated dives and treading water.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 1 or children must be able to easily enter the water and be comfortable participating in small groups.

Combo Starfish and Seahorse This convenient option is for families who want a Level 1 or Level 2 class, but can’t make the scheduled times. Children learn skills from Starfish and Seahorse classes, including submerging their faces, floating and elementary front crawl.

Barracuda: Level 3On the move! Students improve their front and back crawl by learning rotary breathing and body rotation. Breast stroke, underwater swimming, dolphin kick and diving will be introduced.

AQUATICS SPOTLIGHT: USA SWIMMERS

The Sea Serpent Swim Team has an impressive group of teenaged girls participating in USA Swimming. Talia Orenstein, Victoria Veksler, Juliana Lederman and Belle Woodward and are making waves at meets around New England! Their parents love the J’s Aquatics program.

“Talia was not terribly interested in sports but since joining the Sea Serpents, she is a dedicated athlete,” said mom Michelle Gottlieb. “The coaches really focus on technique and personal achievement over just speed... and I love how they are a community of kids of all ages. It is a really special team and we are so happy to have this in our backyard!”

Talia agrees: “I really enjoy improving on my swimming skills, while also spending time with friends I have made since joining the team. Also, the coaches are totally dedicated!”

NEW

Ellen Bartlett and her family joined the JCC about 2 years ago, after moving to Marblehead from New York City. She heard from good friends that the J’s Early Childhood program is the best around, so she visited and enrolled her daughter, Emilia. Now they’re here almost every day!

“I try to work out every week day after I drop off Emilia at preschool. My favorite classes are Barre and TRX. I’ve even started Spinning! Each instructor has so much energy – they motivate me while making it fun.

“We never go home when I pick up Emilia. We stay after school most days and get together with great friends by the pool, playground or gym, depending on the weather. The JCC has helped us so much! It’s a safe, creative learning environment for Emilia and a place to make great friends that we will cherish for life.”

Learn & Play at the JWe’re proud to be named Marblehead’s BEST Preschool again this year by the Readers Choice Awards! Experience the JCC’s renowned Early Childhood Program.

Infant/Toddler Program offers care for children ages 2 months to 2 years and 9 months, from 7:30am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday, year-round. Your baby will grow with our nurturing caregivers who create an environment filled with wonder and curiosity. We encourage language development with daily reading and singing. Toddlers also enjoy Music & Movement classes as part of the weekly curriculum.

PrimeTime for Toddlers welcomes children 15 months to 2 years and 9 months, 8:30am-12:00pm, 2-5 mornings a week, September through June. We offer a summer session, too!

Preschool welcomes children ages 2 years and 9 months to 5 years old. The program runs 8:30am-12:00pm, from September to June. Our experienced teachers and small class sizes set us apart. The classrooms are arranged in a series of learning centers that encourage both social interaction and independence. Gym and Music classes are part of the curriculum.

Masoret Program In addition to offering our strong Preschool curriculum, the Masoret Program features a special emphasis on Jewish culture and the Hebrew language. Masoret welcomes 4 and 5 year olds.

Transition is designed for the oldest 4 year olds who either miss the Kindergarten cut-off (5 years old by December 1st) or may benefit from one more year in a kindergarten readiness classroom. The children participate in work groups, learning concepts and activities that they will see in kindergarten.

Preschool Enrichment Programs Every afternoon, our teachers bring children to these wonderful classes, including Swimming, Drama, Tae Kwon Do, Sports, Cooking and more. These classes are open to all preschoolers. See page 23.

Preschool Plus For families who would like additional care, Preschool Plus runs from 12:00pm-6:00pm daily. We also offer Early Drop-Off 7:30am-8:30am.

If you’re looking for after-school care for your older children, be sure to check out our popular program J Adventure, which welcomes students in grades K-8. See pg. 7.

10 Sensory Activities to Keep Your Child Busy This Winter!

Children love to get messy! Here are 10 ideas to get their creativity going by exploring texture, temperatures and fun.

1. Water Play: Fill up a big container with water, spoons and pails and let your child experiment.

2. Goop: Mix corn starch and water to make your own goop. You can add food coloring, too. Children will love the feel and watching it drip.

3. Fingerpaint: Buy fingerpaint or make your own. Children can use their fingers or even paint with toy cars and/or Legos.

4. Colored Ice Cubes: Put a drop of food coloring in each ice tray section and later, let your child paint with the colored ice.

5. Shaving Cream Art: Shaving cream feels great on your fingers, you can add food coloring, too. This can be done directly on a table or on paper as an art project.

6. Sticky Paper Art: Young children enjoy the stickiness and you can add paper, cotton and all kinds of scraps to let your child create.

7. Rice Play: Put rice either on an activity tray or in a container and give your child funnels, cups, toys, etc. to explore. For older children, you can use a toy scale and weigh different amounts of rice.

8. Playdough: This is another item you can buy but is even more fun to make. A great project for you and your child to do together and then get creative.

9. Silly Putty: You can make your own. Mix 1 part liquid starch to 2 parts glue. I use 1/4 cup of starch and 1/2 cup of glue, which makes 2 large balls of silly putty.

10. Sand Play: Exploring with sand is relaxing for many children and can keep your child busy for hours. Start with dry sand and add a little water for more variety.

EARLY CHILDHOOD SPOTLIGHT: JACK AND DANIEL BERKOWITZ

Sarah Berkowitz knew the JCC had a great reputation for quality Early Childhood care and that’s why she chose to send her sons, Jack and Daniel, here. She says the program has more than lived up to its reputation. “We love it and feel our children are very safe and happy.” She really appreciates the sense of community at the J. “It’s important, as an interfaith family, that we feel welcome and included. It is a diverse community and everyone feels comfortable.”
