In addition, over 5 billion USD has been pledged for humanitarian and development programmes until 2020. Thanking donors who provided more than US$7 billion since 2012, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, stressed that a significant increase in pledges is needed to offer much-needed stability, opportunities and hope to refugees and the countries hosting them. UNHCR is organising a high level meeting on resettlement and other legal pathways for Syrian refugees in Geneva on 30 March. Grandi invited all governments present at the London conference to support that event. German Interior Minister, Thomas de Maiziere, stated the German government plans to send two German Federal Police boats and up to 100 border patrol officials to the Greek coast as of 1 March. De Maiziere said Greece deserved additional support from Europe considering its geographic position and the magnitude of arrivals. On 3 February, the United Kingdom was the first country to respond to Greece’s request to activate the EU civil protection mechanism, by sending the first part of humanitarian aid to assist Greece in dealing with the refugee crisis. In Italy, a seven-year-old Syrian girl suffering from a rare form of eye cancer is to receive treatment through a new humanitarian scheme, the "humanitarian corridor" project. The project was launched by the Catholic Sant'Egidio Community and the Federation of Protestant Churches. The two groups lobbied the Italian government to grant 1,000 humanitarian visas to refugees with specific needs and humanitarian cases in camps in Lebanon, Morocco and Ethiopia. UNHCR welcomed the ecumenical airlift initiative, one of many types of private sponsorship that enables those most in need to reach safety, and start new lives in other countries. Weather Headlines Very strong winds will lead to rough seas and large waves at times around the Greek Islands until Sunday. Heavy, thundery rain affecting the Greek Islands this evening. Arrivals and Departures: The number of sea arrivals to Europe during the first four days of February 2016 has surpassed the total number of sea arrivals for the entire month of February 2015. In Greece, there was a noticeable decrease in the number arrivals from 3,299 on 3 February to 565 on 4 February, possibly due to deteriorating weather conditions. Situation at Borders: In Greece, the ferry strike continued for the second day. The situation at the border between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia improved compared to previous days. Small groups of people were allowed to cross the border more regularly. As a result, the 05 1st Page sites in Eidomeni were less congested. In contrast, temporary accommodation sites in Athens and mainland port of Piraeus became crowded due to road blocks caused by demonstrations by farmers. Condition of People: On Leros, 30 North African nationals, who had been detained at Aghia Marina police station for approximately nine days, were transferred last night to mainland Greece. Twenty- one other individuals, however, remain in detention at the police station. Meanwhile, on Samos, 20 North African nationals remain in police detention. Deaths at Sea: None reported.
