AcAdemic FulFillmentElizabeth was interested in a graduate program long before she found the Master of Science in Leadership at Granite State College. She had even tried a master’s program at another institution, but it didn’t match up well with her lifestyle as a working professional. Finding GSC’s Leadership program was a game changer.

“I wanted to make sure that a master’s program wasn’t going to negatively affect my family life. I’m someone who wants to do it all

and Granite State has given this to me. I’m able to be successful in my full-time job. I’m able to have a personal life, quality time with my family, and I’m able to be a successful student. The online format allows me to log in when I want and wherever I am, so I’m still able to go on vacation – I just take my computer with me.”

PersonAl FulFillmentOutside of work and school, Elizabeth is passionate about the local food economy. She is a regular at her local farmer’s market and she was concerned

when she noticed that it wasn’t as vibrant as year’s past.

“I wanted to provide support, so I asked how I could help. I found out that they were in a period of transitional leadership. The founders of the farmer’s market had been running things for the past 36 years. They also run a full-time farm and were finding that the operations of both, along with everything else in their personal life, were getting to be too much. They were identifying a new manager but in the interim, they needed support.”

ElizabEthmilford, NH

Enhancing your leadership qualities can permeate all the other aspects of your life. Elizabeth from

Milford, NH, is the perfect example.

Along her journey, Elizabeth developed effective leadership practices that not only advanced her own

goals, she applied what she learned to build and support leadership within her community. In the end, this gave her a rich experience that offered academic,

personal, and professional fulfillment.

Page 3: Winter 2015 Course Schedule

Using concepts that she was exploring in the Master of Science in Leadership, Elizabeth worked with the founders to solidify a marketing plan, introduce social media, and get things back on track.

“My goal was to help bridge that gap during the transition in leadership. Now the farmer’s market is moving forward and thriving with their new management.”

Professional fulfillmentElizabeth began her career in Human Resources through a temporary position. She learned quickly, grew as a professional, and proved to

be an asset in the workplace. Her supervisors saw her potential, and Elizabeth earned a role as a full-time, permanent employee.

There is a lot of synergy between Elizabeth’s professional career in Human Resources and the M.S. in Leadership.

“The Leadership curriculum linked to my work in human resources so seamlessly. Everything just fed into each other. Through my professional experience, I had a lot to offer to the discussion and could share real-life, career-relevant examples that were relevant to the topics in our classes.”

Because Leadership spoke to so many areas of her life, Elizabeth thrived as a student in the Master of Science in Leadership

program. In June 2014, she participated

in Commencement. Elizabeth will continue to foster leadership in

everything she does and looks forward to living

her life with this purpose.

Mike is a third generation fire fighter in the City of Manchester. Mid-way through his career he knew that if he wanted to ascend the ranks, getting his degree was important. He took some hands-on courses in Fire Science at a New Hampshire Community College, which were superb, but he wanted a more versatile degree. He looked into Granite State College for an individualized program that would be tailored to his goals.

“When my advisor learned that I was a fire fighter during our initial meeting, she asked me to elaborate on my formal training. At that point, I had more than 20 years’ experience travelling across the country attending conferences and classes. I’ve even taught some locally. She asked me to compile all this information, which led me on a path to uncovering all my prior learning that I completed over the years.”

Realizing that his experience mattered, and could save him a considerable amount of time and money in his pursuit

of his degree, Mike began the process of earning credit for his prior learning.

“I had so much prior learning that they couldn’t apply it all at the associate level. I took a few courses to meet the requirements for my A.S. degree and applied the rest of the prior learning to a bachelor’s program. In the end, I was just 8 or 9 classes away from my Fire Service Administration and Emergency Management degree and I had saved myself time and tuition money.”

As a District Fire Chief in the City of Manchester, Mike’s work schedule is packed. In addition, he has a family and it was important to not sacrifice quality time with his wife and three children. Online courses were a clear fit for Mike’s schedule.

He found that his coursework opened up a lot of doors in his current profession.

“Believe it or not, one of my favorite classes was actually Spanish. I can apply it to real life scenarios. Manchester is getting more and more diverse. When I’m out on the street in an emergency management situation, being able to communicate in more than one language is helpful.”

When he began his initial search, Mike didn’t know about prior learning options. Today he shares that being exposed to this innovative way of earning credit is what he values most about Granite State College.

“They took me in and helped me organize a clutter of certificates and accomplishments. From there, the advisors laid out a plan for me on one, concise document and showed me how attainable my degree was. It’s been a great experience. Without prior learning and the convenience of online classes, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

The orientation schedule is below, or contact your campus for one-on-one coaching.

Student and eLearning+ OrientationThe anticipation of starting or returning to college is exciting! Of course it also comes with many questions. New Student Orientation includes information on purchasing books, accessing student accounts, using library services, strategies for success, and an overview of our eLearning+ system (online course delivery). eLearning+ has online webinars and self-paced orientations for advance practice the week before each term and each campus in all of our regions offers eLearning+ Support Workshops during the first two weeks of classes. Sign up online for orientations and on the campus of your choosing for eLearning+ Support Workshops.

Undergraduate Teacher Prep Information SessionsIt is important to understand how to achieve your goals! This information session provides what you need to begin your journey as an informed educator. Learn how to file your Declaration of Candidacy, program requirements and how the program works.

Library Research SeminarsLibrary Research Seminars are a 45 minute investment in preparation for upcoming research assignments. The seminars provide an overview of library services, resources available, and a general orientation to searching the GSC Discovery Service (our digital stacks).

Library ServicesThe Granite State College Library and Research Commons (LRC) staff provides students with a full complement of services to meet their research needs. Library services are available by e-mail and phone during the day and evening hours seven days a week. The College Librarian provides support in developing a strategy for finding the resources needed to complete course assignments.

The GSC Discovery Service is the gateway to our electronic library collection, providing a full cadre of research databases, and thousands of e-books tailored to support the curriculum. As a GSC student you also have access to the collections of other academic libraries in New Hampshire. With a GSC college ID resources may be borrowed from NHCUC member libraries.

The Library offers a Library Research Success Seminar throughout the state and online. These 45 minute seminars are a great way to prepare for the research assignment students will encounter in their classes.

The GSC Library Research Guide includes resources to help students determine how to plot a research strategy, craft a successful database search, evaluate websites, and accurately document citations for resources used. The Library Research Guide is at: http://library.granite.edu/overviewresearchtool/.

Library services include support of faculty in developing research assignments, introductory library use tutorials, workshops on specific resources, and integrating library resources into class. assignments.

For more information concerning library services, please contact the College Librarian at [email protected], or 603.728.8140.

If you are (1) withdrawing from all your coursework in a term; and (2) planning to return for late start coursework in the same term; and (3) the official drop date for the late start coursework has not passed; you are required to provide the Office of Financial Aid with written confirmation of your intent to return during the current term to avoid a withdrawal calculation. We regret any errors in printing, but we accept no liability for them. Please refer to WebRock for the most updated course schedule.

It is the student’s responsibility to become familiar with the college’s policies and procedures. Please check with our staff if you have any questions, and let us know if something arises which affects your learning experience. The college reserves the right to deny enrollment in any course when the prospective student lacks the necessary background or prerequisites.

Adding CoursesStudents may register for a 6 week Winter course during the of-ficial add/drop period by logging on to WebROCK, or by contacting a campus, the Registrar’s Office, or the Student Information Center.
