Eric, Tyler and Austin Tschannen – the three “chocolatiers” as they are affectionately called – are three brothers carrying on a family tradition for the fourth generation. Growing up at family gatherings and at the dinner table of their parents, the three

have heard the joys and challenges of the retail industry, and knew running their own business would be a nice fit. All the brothers needed was the right venture and along came Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate with locations in Edwardsville and Shiloh.

Purchased just last August, Tyler Tschannen said the fall and Christmas season went as well as they had hoped though they put in many long hours. “Yes it was stressful, but so much fun,” he said with a bright smile – like a kid in a candy store. “We did quite a few corporate orders where we custom-made chocolate logos and forms. One customer wanted a chocolate Corvette – he loved it!”

In fact, Tschannen is hoping to build his corporate business this year offering all manner of products for employers and employees. Weddings are also becoming quite popular as brides and grooms are choosing chocolates as specially crafted favors for their guests. For showers and other special occasions, customers are ordering up a platter with a selection of delicious treats that can be arranged in the honoree’s initials or other appropriate designs.

Of course, the most popular holiday of the year is Valentine’s Day. Specifically chocolate covered strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and cherries will fly off the shelves. But look closer in the candy counter and see the huge selection of hand-made truffles and other chocolate delicacies like caramels, nut chips and chews, pecan tootles, marshmallow NutWhips, molasses puffs and pretzels. How about chocolate covered coffee beans or a chocolate covered piece of bacon?!

“Our best-selling product is the 2-pound boxed chocolate special in solid milk or dark chocolate,” Tschannen said. Speaking of dark chocolate, it seems to be the new rage

for weight-conscious people looking for the rich antioxidants that chocolate has naturally. “I have regular customers come in for this 2-pound box just because of its health value.”

The original Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate opened in south St. Louis City on Chippewa 30 years ago. After years of studying the art of handcrafting small batches of premium choco-lates, founder Dan Abel came back to his hometown of St. Louis to open his own candy

company: Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate. The candy kitchen was visible through the windows of the retail store – allowing customers to see that the candy was freshly made breaking the mold of large factories and mass production.

Today, original recipes from the turn of the century are slowly cooked in copper kettles and stirred by hand. Premium ingre-dients are used in all chocolates including fresh whole milk, fresh whipping cream, pure cane sugar, grade AA butter, pure Madagascar vanilla, fresh fruit and all natural milk and dark chocolate.

In 2002, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate began franchising its retail store concept. The franchise stores were designed to represent the original St. Louis store. Thus, Tschannen’s stores in Shiloh and Edwardsville both have a small kitchen to make fresh chocolates on the premises. This ensures that customers will receive only the freshest products.

Just a couple years ago, the Abel family re-launched the legend-ary Mavrakos chocolate brand after holding the recipe book passed down from the Mavra-kos owners in 1984. Mavrakos was a true example of the art of handcrafting small batches of fresh chocolates and is remembered by many from the area.

Imagine for a moment you have little or no eyesight. Everyday living is challenging enough, but communication with the outside

world might be impossible with the exception of what is on the television or radio. What about newspapers, books, magazines, the daily and weekly ad flyers, job openings and other classi-fied ads?

If not for the volunteer efforts of Minds Eye Information Service (formerly Radio Information Service), the area's blind and print impaired would not have the ability to hear the verbatim readings from literally dozens of these local pub-lications with pertinent information. Because of over 200 volunteers’ dedication, informational broadcasting is provided to help the blind and print impaired lead more enriched, productive and independent lives.

Print impaired means those who are blind, have vision loss or who have muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, stroke, arthritis or any condition that makes holding reading materials difficult.

Minds Eye Information Service was established as a broadcast service for the blind and print impaired in 1973 by the Oblates of Mary Immac-

ulate in Belleville. Even though the radio sta-tion is physically located on the grounds of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, it is a varied faith listenership so programming is designed to be non-sectarian.

Minds Eye provides an actual free radio that can tune in exclusively to the right signal. People without these particular radios cannot hear the station on a regular radio because the sta-tion utilizes the side band of WXOS 101.1 FM to broadcast.

“The station has a control room – ‘the brains of the operation’ - control board, live newsroom, space for three ‘live’ volunteer readers at the same time plus five recording booths,” said ex-

ecutive director Marjorie Williams. “Each record-ing booth has a computer and microphone, and readers can start and stop as necessary. There’s no reason to be nervous. We bought this equip-ment with volunteers in mind. Some don't even like computers!”

“Being a reader for Minds Eye is just an incred-ible feeling,” said volunteer and board secretary Sue Bolen of Belleville. “I picture someone sit-ting in their chair listening and it’s nice knowing that I can keep people in touch. I can't imagine not being able to pick up a book and read it.”

Actually, Bolen became familiar with Minds Eye 30 years ago when her blind sister-in-law would enjoy listening to her radio tuned in to the Minds Eye station. “She was living with us at the time and loved when books were read on the air,” Bo-len said. “I remember her listening to the ‘Autobi-ography of Phil Donahue’ – she didn’t care for it but I listened to the whole thing! Since that time I have always wanted to be a volunteer.”

Her reading duties have included Sauce maga-zine, St. Louis magazine and the Riverfront Times which, she said, can have a few… um… bad words and there’s no “bleeping” them out. “I think it’s so important to know there is no cen-

sorship and no editorializing – to do so would be unfair to the listener.” Thousands in the St. Louis and Metro East area already listen to Minds Eye daily, but that is just a fraction of the population who might need this liberating service. Broadcasts can also be heard on the web site.

To continue this 24-hour-a-day, commercial-free service, volunteers and the staff of Minds Eye work tirelessly to raise funds through grants, sponsorships and at least two big fund raisers which the community is invited to participate: Soiree pour la Vue and Beepball.

Soiree pour la Vue – An Evening For Sight is celebrating its 10th anniversary as one of the most spectacular Mardi Gras dinner auctions in the St. Louis area. This year it will be at 6 p.m., Feb. 1, at River Bottom Saloon, 112 Sidney Street in St. Louis.

“The site and catering by Patti Long is just phe-nomenal,” said Williams. “Of course we will have the ever-popular Funky Butt Brass Band and our favorite Weathercaster as emcee, Mike Roberts.” The event is presented by Lighthouse for the Blind – a company that employs blind workers – to benefit Minds Eye. Lots of fabulous auc-tion items will be available like Fox Club tickets, “green seats” for a Cardinals game, fine jewelry, a five-night stay on a lake in Michigan, a time share in Branson, and so much more! There’s also two-and-a-half hours of complimentary bever-ages, including beer, wine, cocktails, the event's signature hurricane and soft drinks! Register online for the Soiree at www.mindseyeradio.org/soiree or call the station at (618) 394-6444.

BeepballThe other big event of the year on May 18 is Beepball where local businesses and nonprofit organizations gear up for a different kind of baseball … blindfolded baseball. Beepball is baseball using beeping balls and buzzing bases to allow the blind and visually impaired to fully participate in the games. Most players, whether blind or sighted, play blindfolded relying heav-ily on assistance from teammates and auditory cues from the balls and bases.

The two winning teams then play in the Ulti-mate St. Louis Beepball Championship game GCS Stadium in Sauget on June 22. Celebrity team captains will be announced soon and the public is encouraged to not only attend the games but get their own team together as well. Call the station at (618) 394-6444.

The Lieser Law Firm specializes in protecting their client whether injured by a negligent person or company, falsely accused or arrested, or in need of

making a change to protect the integrity of their family, they will guide you through the legal process.

PERSoNAl INJURY“While you cannot predict when someone will fall victim to negligence, there is the power to pursue justice,” said Shaun Lieser. The Lieser Law Firm has the experience and resources to help investigate personal injury claims, determine the parties responsible, and recover monetary damages due to a personal injury in one of the following scenarios:

• Automobile Accidents• Motorcycle Accidents• Trucking Accidents• Dog Bites/Animal Attacks• Medical Negligence• Nursing Home Abuse• Premises Liability• Products Liability• Workers’ Compensation• Wrongful Death

CRIMINAl lAWWhen receiving a traffic ticket or other such violation, many people often think it’s easier to plead guilty, pay a fine and accept a conviction, despite the fact that it will likely remain on their record forever. “Criminal convic-tions can have drastic consequences that can result in an increase in auto insurance premiums, suspension of driving privileges, the ability to gain employment or a promotion, and even jail time,” he said. “Do not let one incident, or mistake, haunt you for a lifetime when there is the possibility you can avoid a conviction.”

Some common cases The Lieser Law Firm handle are:• Traffic Violations• Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)• Drug Offenses and Felony/Misdemeanor Charges

“The pursuit of justice is not a simple task, and it takes courage to present a case to a judge or jury,” Lieser said. “So be courageous, and take the first step toward pro-tecting yourself by contacting us today for a free evalua-tion of your case.”

Now you can add the wildly popular HydraFacial to the already long list of health and beauty treatments at Emerald Isle Health and Beauty Day Spa. The HydraFacial is the newest advance in non-laser skin resurfacing and is

making headlines across the country.

“This facial treatment gives patients the results they’ve always wanted with skin that’s glowing and most importantly, skin that’s healthy,” said Emerald Isle owner Rita Sax. “We love providing such a widely requested and effective treatment to our clients because of the instant results they receive in just 30 minutes. With regular maintenance, the skin will only get better and better."

“The HydraFacial combines spa therapies with medical technology to cleanse, exfoliate, extract, hydrate, and nourish the skin,” Sax said. “The specially formulated skin solutions provide your skin with antioxidants and hyaluronic acid which are the two superpowers of skin health."

In fact, Hollywood loves the HydraFacial. Celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Matthew McConaughey, Evan Rachel Wood, Kate Winslet, and Amy Poehler use the HydraFacial, and now Marie Osmond of “Donnie and Marie” can be added to the list. In a recent interview with Prevention Magazine, Marie was asked to share her skin secrets, and she said; “I’ve had a HydraFacial, which is a non-laser skin resurfacing. I had a second procedure, which was done with infrared light; it tightens the skin and stimulates collagen to make your face look more toned.”

“Instant results will leave the skin looking radiant and refined with no downtime,” Sax said. “It’s perfect right before a big night out or special occasion."

Emerald Isle is at 3324 N. Il-linois St. in Swansea, (618) 233-9886; www.eids.biz. Gift certificates available.

For almost 20 years now, Preferred Spine and Rehab in Fairview Heights has been effectively treating patients of all ages with a wide variety of health issues. The clinic is an outpatient rehabilitation facility offering diverse treatment solutions

such as non-surgical Spinal Decompression, Class IV Laser Therapy, Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, Weight Loss Programs, a proprietary Peripheral Neu-ropathy Treatment Program and Whole Body Vibration. When patients enter the facility, they are greeted by two receptionists who will provide a complimentary insurance verification and assist patients with any questions they may have. The clinic works with all insurance companies, but also offers affordable payment plans and military discounts.

Dr. Christopher Renner, lead physician, was introduced to alternative medicine for whiplash pain relief as a result of an automobile accident. Inspired by the effective back pain relief treatments that he received, Dr. Renner began his career in the health care field by earning a pre-chiropractic education at Southwestern Illinois College and then a four-year degree at SIUE. He then attended Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, MO.

Shortly after graduation, Dr. Renner joined the team at Preferred Spine and Rehab, and additionally became a Titlist Certified Golf Fitness Instructor – one of the few in the area. This is a national certification that enables him to work with golf pros and other avid golfers to take their game to the next level.

Preferred Spine and Rehab also treats patients that have been involved in motor vehicle accidents and work-related injuries. By utilizing the newest, most effective treatment technologies in the state-of-the-art facility, patients can count on excellent care with predictable outcomes.

“I think our on-going success is attributed to a friendly, professional staff plus our tailor-made pain relief programs," said Dr. Renner. "I also think our patients' diligent work and commitment to their own personal health contributes greatly to their expe-

dited healing and recovery."

Since each patient and their conditions are unique, so are the tailor-made treatment protocols used at Preferred Spine and Rehab. The doctor will spend one-on-one time consulting with each patient to accurately assess and diagnose the problem.

Preferred's brand new, breakthrough treatment for osteoporosis is the BStrong4Life® program that allows the doctor to address the strength and quality of the bone, not just the soft tissue. It works to make the bone stronger by reversing osteoporosis. “I feel this program completes the circle of a true neuro-musculo-skeletal specialist,” he said. “I am so excited to be able to offer a solution for such a life-changing condition.”

Preferred Spine and Rehab is located at 5007 North Illinois Street, Suite 1Fairview Heights; (618) 699-4099; www.preferredspineandrehab.com.

Scrub-a-dub-dub - one stylist and your puppy in a tub - at your home without the usual mess! What could be more convenient? Introducing LaBest Mobile Grooming

Inc. – a new service offered by one of the area’s premier dog groomers/boarders that has been family-owned and run for three generations now. LaBest Inc. is a mobile pet grooming salon that literally arrives at your door and performs a full range of salon services.

“We do everything in our fully equipped mobile unit from baths, tartar removal, massage therapy, skin treatments – you name it,” said Master Pet Stylist, Meritus Deborah Walker who is also a Derma Tech Specialist. “We pull our van right up in your driveway, or in the street, whichever is preferred. The van is completely self contained with tub, water, blow dryers – everything we need for any size dog or cat.”

Speaking of cats: many groomers aren’t taking cats any more, “but we do!” Grooming is even beneficial for short-haired pets. “We hydrate the skin thus reducing the age-old nuisance of shedding,” she said.

Mobile pet grooming services are actually a nationwide trend because it’s convenient for the customer, it reduces po-tential stress on the pet and it’s a godsend for home-bound older people as well as busy families.

Veterinarians recommend consistent grooming for any pet to not only make them look good, but to help keep them healthy as well. It also provides the opportunity to be aware of any changes such as on the skin or ears.

Check out the Prissy Pet Program designed to help pet own-ers maintain the health and beauty of their pet. Customers of LaBest Mobile Grooming can also shop online and have their products delivered on appointment day for no extra charge. Yard clean up is offered as well at the time of service.

In addition, LaBest is one of the few companies in the area that specializes in handstripping and show trims. And all of their groomers are taught by the International Society of Canine Cosmetology (ISCC) grooming school that is at LaBest’s physical location in Edwardsville.

Hand stripping is very important for healthy hair and skin on a harsh-coated dog. A harsh coat should grow in three stages. The third stage of hair has to be removed by hand to allow the sebaceous gland to secrete oils upon the skin from the hair follicle. The hair does not always come out on its own with some breeds. If hair is not removed but instead is clipped with clippers or scissors, the coat will become softer and the dead hair will clog the follicle. This can cause inflam-mation which can lead to the dog scratching, followed by skin infections. Most harsh coated dogs with healthy skin

and coat have a flat coat with deep color. Harsh coated dogs should be rotated every two weeks. This is perfect for the Prissy Pet Program.

Servicing Illinois and Missouri, call laBest at (618) 692-6399 to book an appointment and don’t forget to ask about the Neighborhood discounts. laBest Mobile Grooming Inc. is bonded and insured. www.labestinc.net.

Show Hours: Friday from 2 to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.;

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Southwest Illinois’ annual Home Show. Every year people

look forward to seeing the latest products, services and ideas for remodeling, restoring or renewing their home. With over 100 local companies displaying everything from state-of-the-art kitchens, luxurious baths, window treatments, spas, decks, sunrooms, room additions, spectacular landscaping and much more, this makes the “Home Show every homeowner’s dream,” said Jeff Schmidt, show event chairman.

The Home Show allows the visitor to walk around at their own pace in a comfortable environment and talk to professionals one on one while viewing their product first hand. A Home Show Guide will be given to every attendee.

Show-goers will want to view the new projects on display from the HBA Remodeler of Distinction Awards: amazing kitchens and bathrooms; waterproofing, structural and exterior projects; outdoor living spaces; and landscaping projects from HBA members.

A live broadcast from 101 ESPN’s “The Fast Lane” will air from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday. It’s your chance to see Randy Karraker, Chris Duncan and D’Marco Farr in action. Desert Storm veteran Jim Hale has known all of his life that he wanted his own business and his experience in the Marine Corp. gave him the background to be a success. “I can say for sure that the biggest thing the

Marines taught me was to think and learn on the fly,” he said. “It was a daily education.”

In 1996, he and his wife, Deb, moved to O’Fallon where they have raised their children. “We really feel a part of this community,” Hale said. “All of our kids went through the O’Fallon school district from K on up.”

Now in his own business for 15 months, Hale has worked in the industry here for 13 years. “I know I can do as good or better of a job as any other company without having to charge as much,” he said. “I am a smaller shop so I don’t have much overhead. It’s our niche.”

Heritage is affiliated with American Standard which is a 130-year-old company that pio-neered clean and affordable heating for the home. From the earliest cast-iron radiators to today’s highly efficient heating and cooling systems, the American Standard brand has been synonymous with home comfort.

Interestingly, the American Standard Heating and Air Conditioning family tree includes many of the most notable names in American manufacturing from the

19th and 20th centuries. And it's why even after 130 years, Hale thinks Ameri-can Standard remains the name to trust.

Heritage also installs geo-thermal heating and cooling. “Most people think it’s better to install geo-thermal units when a house is first built and that your

whole front yard will be dug up,” Hale said. “Not true. We drill two to five little holes that are just 3 to 5 inches wide – no big trenches. Yes, it’s more expensive up front but you will only pay $70 to $80 per month (average square footage of 2,400) plus you will get a 30% off tax credit. It pays for itself in short order.”

Heritage Heating and Cooling offers three different all-inclusive service plans - call for details. They have 24-hour service for residen-tial and commercial on all makes and models, and are bonded and insured. Heritage has an A rating on Angie’s List and they are members of the BBB. They are also ActOnEnergy allies

for both residential and commercial. “We are also an Authorized Customer Care dealer which means I have better than 90% customer satisfaction,” Hale said. “Actually we have a 100% customer rating.”

Heritage is located at 615 South lincoln, Suite B in o’Fallon; (618) 624-5015; www.heritage-service.com.
