Creative Landscapes is happy to report a successful year after making the transition from Scott’s to their new name. Building upon their long-time reputation as an innovative leader in the

industry, they provide a landscape that is carefully planned via com-puter imaging technology to enhance a home’s beauty and increase its value by an average of 12 percent.

An important element of landscape design is the lighting, said owner Josh Martie. “I would like customers to consider the importance of landscape lighting not only for aesthetics, but for safety as well.

“Really, the number one reason for landscape lighting is to light up walkways, corners, doorways, patios and porches to provide a safety element to your home at night not only to protect from intruders, but to eliminate potential falls, “ he said. With today’s range of products on the market, Creative Landscapes can install a super nice lighting package to suit any budget.

Techniques Creative Landscapes likes to incorporate into the lighting design:• Highlighting trees. Whether illumined from below or given presence

by a light mounted in the tree itself, trees make stunning features.• The use of uplights. Uplighting is dramatic because light is expected

to shine downward. Used in moderation, it’s a great way to highlight architectural and landscaping features.

• Having a focus. The entryway is often center stage, a way of saying, “Welcome, this way in.”

• Combining beauty and function. For example, adding lighting to plantings along a pathway breaks up the “runway” look of too many lights strung alongside a walk.

• Varying the fixtures. While the workhorses are spots and floods, designers turn to a wide range of fixtures, area lights, step lights, and bollards or post lights.

• Sticking to warm light. A rainbow of colors is possible, but most designers avoid anything but warm white light, preferring to showcase the house and its landscape rather than create a light show.

Another trend, Martie said, is toward the use of LED fixtures that were once disparaged for their high cost and cold, bluish glow. “But now they’ve come down in price and now have that warm light people love in halogen bulbs.” Although LED fixtures remain more expensive than incandescents, installation is simpler because they use low-voltage wiring thus customers save on their electricity bill. Plus, LED lighting lasts three times longer.

Creative Landscapes can use their revolutionary computer imaging pro-gram to show homeowners exactly how the lighting will appear on their home, but even more specific, Martie said, is for the customer to actually see it “in person” on their home: for $50, Martie will come to the home and set up a demonstration for the customer to see, say, when they drive up from work. Then the next day the lighting is removed so the same customer sees it bare again – “It makes a huge impact!”

The lighting company that Creative Landscapes uses provides a three-year warranty on aluminum fixtures and a lifetime warranty on copper and brass pieces. “Copper and brass of course are more expensive, but when comparing them to aluminum you can just feel the better quality that will last much much longer,” he said.

On top of these generous warranties, Creative Landscapes gives their own two-year craftsmanship warranty on their lighting. “If there’s any wiring or other issues, we come out and fix it for free!” The most cost-ef-ficient way to purchase lighting is within a custom designed landscape package so all is installed at the same time.

Come visit Creative Landscapes and enjoy the display gardens surround-ing the charming Old Farmhouse. Just in time for Mother's Day, the gar-den center has plenty of wonderful gift ideas, including gift certificates.

Creative Landscapes is located in Fairview Heights on Old Collinsville Road just minutes from St. Clair Square: 5515 Old Collinsville Road; (618) 632-9338; www.stlcreativelandscapes.com.

Mueller Furniture has been an anchor in the community at 1004 East Main Street in Belleville since 1927. Now owned and oper-ated by the third and fourth generations, the store is enjoying its

best years in history with the expansion of a revitalized Main Street, the growing surrounding communities and the recent expansion of the store.

While longevity is certainly important, Mark Mueller, general manager, and his father Lynwood Mueller, president, believe the things that differ-entiate their store from others are their true keys to success: high-quality American-made furniture, excellent customer service, personal business relationships and competitive pricing.

As a family-owned business, it is important to the Muellers to work with family-owned fur-niture suppliers around the country. “We think about our business in terms of relationships rather than transactions,” Mark Mueller said. "We encourage our customers to use us as their personal resource for anything furniture and mattress related."

“The furniture industry is interesting because there is no bottom to how cheap the product can be,” he continued. “But at the lowest price, the value is horrible. The bad taste left behind by poor quality outlasts the sweet taste of a low price.”

Mueller customers understand this concept. “Our prices are competitive and a customer is not going to get bombarded by five salespeople when they walk in – we have a well-trained staff with great overall knowledge of anything furniture or mattress related."

Most people are aware of Mueller Furniture on East Main Street in Belleville, but there are still many who have never visited the store. But when they do the comment heard time and again is “I had no idea how big the store actually is,” Mueller said. “We have 25,000 square feet of recently remodeled showroom space – 16,000 upstairs and 9,000 downstairs! The idea for the remodel was to make a more impactful first impression and arrange the fur-niture into ‘room settings’ so the customer can visualize it in their own home. The remodel’s plan was also to highlight some of the original architectural features in the building like the art deco tin ceiling and moldings.”

In recent years, the offerings at Mueller have gravitated toward Amish and Mennonite American-made companies because “they have a higher quality and provide more customiza-tion choices rather than brands like Broyhill and Thomasville that mass produce every piece leav-ing the customer with no choices,” he said.

Customization allows the customer to match or complement other pieces or features in their

home without completely replacing everything. “For example, if you love your dining room table but need new chairs – we can do that no problem.”

Of course leather is still very popular – “it’s much more popular than ever,” Mueller said. “In 2004 we had four leather groups – now we have 40!” Mueller carries the only American-made leather furniture brand -

Bradington Young - from Hickory, NC. “If cared for properly, you can expect top-grain leather to last 10 to 15 years or longer.”

An interesting point to make about buying American-made furniture is the low-carbon footprint it leaves. "The Amish furniture crafts-men only use solid cherry, oak, maple, hickory or elm wood that is grown in the Northern United States. They build the furniture, finish it and ship directly to us. It's a much smaller car-bon footprint than imported furniture produced in factories without environmental regulations."

In addition, Mueller likes to point out their Health and Wellness products, which are a “need not a want,” he said. “There are lift chairs for those who need the extra help and we have bedding and mattresses that are adjustable to provide a good night’s sleep. Four reasons to sleep on an adjustable mattress is to reduce acid reflux, sleep apnea, snoring and waking up your partner – it really affects everything in life.”

A to Z Home Improvements, Inc. is a full-service remodeling team of Bernie and Tom Mleczko who have been in the industry together for 16 years.

Tom Mleczko has been a home remodeling contractor now for 42 years and Bernie a decorator for 10 years and the owner of the Consignment Shop on Highway 50 in O’Fallon for five years.

Together they can help a customer take the space they have and completely remodel or add on to their home to give it a fresh new design. The most popular request they have is for a more open floor plan for the actual living area. “We can accomplish this by simply removing a wall or two and redesigning the layout,” said Mleczko.

With so much experience, A to Z has completed everything from remodels on 200-year-old homes to the construction of a custom-built home and everything in between. “In these economic times, homeowners have decided to remodel their existing home to give them more space,” he said. “We can finish the basement, add a room on the home or simply do a renovation to make the home feel brand new.”

Services by A to Z Home Improvement, Inc. include any kind of interior projects such as basements, kitchens and baths, and exterior work such as siding, decks and patios.

For more information, call Tom Mleczko at (618) 581-9342 or Bernie Rasp Mleczko at (618) 531-4714. A to Z also offers free estimates, senior and military discounts.

Anne Nowak, founder of Maids My Way, Inc., became frustrated by not being able to find an individual or a cleaning company that could clean her own home reliably and completely up to her standards. She also did not appreciate being

charged extra fees for what she thought should be routine cleaning.

After asking friends, neighbors and co-workers for referrals, everyone said the same thing: “I have someone, but I am not real happy with them;” Or “They are OK but not great.”

Then a friend suggested: “With your background, why don’t you start your own business?” Indeed, having an extensive background in business management and development, Nowak did a lot of research to find out what type of cleaning service would be the most valuable to the discriminating client.

In an informal survey, she asked friends and family what they liked, didn’t like and what services they would expect from a cleaning company. With that information, she built a cleaning company around what her clients would want and then took it a step further to make sure this new company would promote exceptional value for a great personalized service that would exceed clients' expectations.

“We give each client a custom cleaning plan just for them,” Nowak said. “Maids My

Way also wants to make sure our maids are reliable, diligent and trustworthy. In ad-dition to a stringent hiring procedure, all of our staff members are required to pass a county, state and national background check and drug test. I also think it’s important to encourage and reward my staff to ensure long-term employment.”

And the best news? Maids My Way does windows! Yes! Windows! They also regularly change bed linens. Using green products is very important to Nowak and she is proud to say they use 100 percent plant-based products and steam as their earth-friendly household cleaners.

“Finally, we survey our clients regularly to make sure they are happy with our services and if there are any areas for improvement,” she said. “We are also fully insured.”

Maids My Way is located at 1115 Frontage Road in O’Fallon and can be reached at (618) 206-MAID to set up your free consultation. Also visit www. maidsmyway.com.

Are you concerned about whether or not your child will be left behind? Are you worried he or she might need to attend Summer school? All

too often a child is left back with the hope that the second time through a light bulb will suddenly go off. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Following is an important message for parents.

When a child is struggling with schoolwork - despite all best attempts to help - there is a strong possibility that your child may be struggling with a vision problem. Before you say, “Not my child, he has perfect vision,” please keep reading.

As soon as parents and educators hear that a child can see 20/20, they assume the child has “perfect vision,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. All it means is your child can see the size of letters that are supposed to be seen from a distance of 20 feet. This is only ONE of over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning.

According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy, “If a child is missing even one of these visual skills, reading and learning can become difficult. If a child is missing more, reading can be nearly impossible.”

If your child struggles with reading, you need to know the symptoms of a vision problem because children rarely tell their parents they are having trouble see-ing. Here are some of the more common symptoms. Does your child:

• Get frustrated when trying to read or do homework?

• Take much longer doing his/her homework than it should?

• Have a “tracking” problem?• Have trouble making out words?• “Forget” to bring homework assignments

home?

• Find it harder to read at the end of the day than in the morning?

• Skip words or repeat lines when reading out loud to you?

• Reverse letters like b's into d's when reading?• Have a short attention span?

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a fully correctable vision problem. Please don’t assume your child is not at risk because the results of the last vision screening came through OK. To be sure your child has all the visual skills required for reading and learning, schedule a developmental vision evaluation (this is different than a regular eye exam and is typically performed by a Developmental Optometrist).

If a vision problem is at the root of your child’s difficul-ties, there is hope that there will be a positive end to all the struggling. Schedule a developmental vision evaluation for your child today. Taking action today could make next school year much easier for everyone.

For a more in-depth symptom checklist or more information about the critical link between vision and learning, please visit www.ungereyecare.com, or call (618) 667-2020.

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS!1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of

undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child...• Dislike reading?• Skip or reread lines?• Prefer to be read to?• Lose place when reading?• Have trouble remembering what has been read?• Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?• Make numbers/letter reversals?• Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Memorial Hospital East is officially open to the public as of 5:30 a.m. on Tues-day, April 12. The hospital is located at 1404 Cross Street in Shiloh.

“We have been preparing for the opening of Memorial Hospital East since 2011, when we filed a Certificate of Need with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (IHFSRB),” said Ruth Holmes, administrator of Memorial Hospital East. Memo-rial Hospital East was unanimously approved by the IHFSRB, making it the second new hospital to receive project approval in the state of Illinois in more than 20 years.

The 94-bed, all private suite, 207,212 square foot, full-service hospital completed construction in December 2015. Since that time, a Transition Occupancy Plan, put in place in early 2015, has provided appropriate training for staff and proper pro-curement of equipment and supplies.

Memorial Hospital East offers the community a full-service hospital with the latest in amenities. Built in a natural setting in Shiloh, the hospital features 94 private patient rooms: 72 medical/surgical rooms, six intensive care unit beds and 16 LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum) rooms. The Emergency Department features six treatment and six observation rooms, all with easy access to critical care treatment areas such as the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Radiology. Me-morial Hospital East has four surgical suites and two C-section rooms.

Krupp Florist has been a family-owned business located on West Main Street in Belleville since 1955. Over these years, their reputation for superb quality of flow-ers, creative designs, value and professional service has become well known. Based on the "can do" attitude, the Krupp team has seven designers including one FTD Master Designer and one FTD Master Florist Manager to create any style or look desired.

In addition, every bouquet from Krupp Florist is meticulously designed with the freshest flowers in Belleville and hand-de-livered to your recipient’s door by our experienced and friendly delivery staff. Browse the Krupp Florist web site and buy flowers online, or call the flower shop in Belleville and speak with our friendly and knowledgeable staff.

But for a nice outing, visiting the historic home that is the shop’s newest location next door to the familiar building, is a delight and a chance to view all of the beautiful flower arrangements, green plants, gift items, silk arrangements, chimes and memo-rial stones, and of course, the famous Wally Bag collection.

The current owner, Walter Bergman, who purchased the family business in 2011 right after the “big fire," created Wally Bags. Having worked in the handbag industry for 35 years and learning how a piece is constructed from start to finish, the time was right in 2009 to launch his own company that includes handbags and other accessories. They are available at Krupp’s, many other locations around the area and online. But he’s quick to point out that Krupp’s is traditionally a florist. The original building has since been restored and houses the design studio plus

the greenhouse, and two large coolers for the flowers and plants. All this extra space has given Krupp’s what they needed to expand their wedding business.

“We went from 15 weddings per year to over 70 every year,” Bergman said. “This business is so family oriented as we start a relationship with prom flowers, then a

few years later wedding flowers, which become Mother’s Day, Valentine’s, baby showers, etc.. until it comes full cycle to the funeral. We become very close with our families.”

Bergman’s experienced staff includes operation manager Dona Nebelsick who has been with the company for 12 years and Joyce Newman who has been with Krupp Florist for 20 years now.

Giving back to the community is very important to Bergman and his staff, and they enjoy supporting the local Bridges Pro-gram that enables students, ages 18-21 with developmental disabilities, to bridge the gap between youth and adulthood. Bridges provides opportunities for these fabulous individuals to demonstrate independence, responsibility and citizenship while completing the activities within the program. One of

those activities is to create art for sale at Krupp Florist that benefits these students. “We love being a part of this program here in Belleville – the kids are so creative, too.”

Krupp Florist is located at 3610 West Main Street in Belleville, (618) 233-8594; www.kruppflorist.com.

Family-owned and operated for 18 years, AAMCO of Fairview Heights now offers total car care service. Their state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment allows technicians to distinguish between minor and major repairs, saving the customer unnecessary repair costs.

Owner Tami Louis said she was searching in 1999 for a reputable franchise to invest in after raising her family and while her husband was still employed by Turner Electric. Recently, Rich Louis retired from his position as president and has joined Tami and the AAMCO team as the sales/marketing director.

Tami Louis said she chose the AAMCO franchise because even though it is a national company, “We have made it our own and we give that kind of ‘small-town’ great customer service that we grew up knowing. I also really liked the fact that we have a National Warranty meaning wherever you are in the country and something goes wrong, AAMCO will cover it. That fact is also very important for our customers who live and/or work on Scott Air Force Base.”

“A big thing for us is our commitment to quality work and customer service,” she said. “We are not some giant organiza-tion – there are six of us. When you call, you will be speaking to either our manager Kevin, or Rich or myself. Eighty per-cent of our business is repeat, which says a lot about us.”

AAMCO is located at 5609 N. Illinois Street in Fairview Heights. Call (618) 222-2626 to schedule an appoint-ment and visit www.AAMCOFairviewHtsIL.com.

FOR THOSE WHO APPRECIATE AGREAT VIEW THERE’S AVALONWhen your bed faces a wall, the view never changes. Which is precisely why our beds, unlike those of our competitors, face a window.* Because we think letting you see the incredible views that river cruising is famous for, is a darn good idea. And if we put that much attention into a bed, imagine what we’ve done for the rest of your experience.
