New hospital approved by planners Dear members, The last few months have been very positive for Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals – not least because you, the readers, have helped us to hit our target of recruiting 5,000 public members. So I’m delighted to welcome you all, and to encourage you to persuade your family, friends and neighbours to join too, because we want to see our membership continue to grow. It has been good to see so many people attending meetings at the Trust – whether the AGMs (see the report inside), or the seminars on infection control and new hospital building plans. If you’ve not managed to get along to any of these sessions yet, do check out what’s coming up and if you have an idea for other topics we could be presenting just get in touch. Do also look out for information on the election of governors from your area, which will be happening next year. The Trust Board is looking forward to working with the new governing body – but we need good turnouts in the elections to ensure local representatives have strong backing from the communities they will serve. I hope you will find this newsletter useful and informative, but again, if you have ideas for improvements, do let us know. Wishing you all peace and joy at Christmas, and a happy New Year. I hope you will find this newsletter useful and informative, but again, if you have ideas for improvements, do let us know.

Wishing you all peace and joy at Christmas, and a happy New Year.

Sue DavisChief Executive

SANDWELL and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is delighted to have gained outline planning permission for its planned new hospital on Grove Lane in Smethwick.

The £380m hospital will have 723 beds and provide acute hospital care for the most poorly patients in Sandwell and western Birmingham. It will also have maternity, neonatal, children’s inpatient facilities and a range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities.

In addition, five community hospitals will be developed in West Bromwich, Rowley Regis, Winson Green (currently the site of the Birmingham Treatment Centre), Aston and Perry Barr. These developments are part

of the Towards 2010 Programme and include a range of outpatient, day surgery, intermediate care, community services, urgent care and diagnostic facilities. Other hospital outpatient clinics and health services will take place in health centres around the area, closer to where people live.

Only the most ill patients will be admitted to the hospital in Smethwick – most people will go to community hospitals or health centres and around 85% of operations will be carried out as a day case rather than inpatient procedure.

The hospital will occupy 6.76 hectares (16.70 acres) on the brownfield site which incorporates all land bordered by London Street, Heath

the Cape Arm Canal. The new acute hospital is due for completion by 2015.

The decision by the planning committee at Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council has been welcomed by the Trust.

Trust Chair Sue Davis said: You can get involved. The Trust needs your involvement in helping the ongoing development of the new hospital. You are encouraged have your say and help to develop a fit-for-purpose and affordable acute hospital of local choice.

For further information on opportunities for involvement contact Jason Nedrick, Engagement Manager, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust on 0121 507 5919 or email [email protected].

This decision by local councillors is ‘just what the doctor ordered’. Our staff are working hard to deliver first-class care in buildings many of which are frankly third rate - 19th-century workhouses are just not up to the job of housing 21st-century medical care

Local people deserve better and building the new hospital, and plans to provide care for more people in new and refurbished facilities closer to where they live, will ensure they receive the best possible care in the best possible environment.

Trust recruits 5,000th member THE Trust has reached a milestone, having recruited its 5,000th member in August.

There are now over 6,000 members and the Trust Board believes that a strong and well-informed membership will offer Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals exciting opportunities to enhance links with local communities as a foundation trust.

Many public bodies make effective use of focus groups to test reactions to new ways of working or to consult on changes to services; since the Health Service is changing constantly, having a 5,000-strong ready-made forum should be an enormous asset.

Our application for foundation trust status

What is the role of a governor? The Council of Governors has three main roles, which are:

Advisory roleTo communicate to the Board of Directors the needs of •members and the wider community; To ensure the Trust hears the views of the people it serves •– feeding ideas back to the Trust; To communicate the work of the Trust and its plans to its •members.

Guardian roleTo ensure that the Trust is operating in accordance with •its terms of authorisation. In this regard it acts in a trustee role for the welfare of the organisation.

Strategic roleTo advise the Board of Directors on the long-term •direction of the Trust; To work with the Board of Directors on the Trust’s plans •for service improvements and developments.

NHS foundation trusts remain firmly part of the NHS and are subject to the same standards as all other NHS trusts. However, they are run locally and are more clearly accountable to their patients and the public.

We want to become an NHS foundation trust because it will enable us to deliver our plans better, change the way we provide services and respond to the needs of our distinct and diverse population more effectively.

Our plans to secure foundation trust status are progressing well. This table outlines the process of our application:

Not one AGM but two!

Two pints of milk and a quick blood testSANDWELL and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is now offering blood tests at Asda Superstore in Great Bridge.

Blood samples are taken by a senior hospital phlebotomist, who then dispatches it to the hospital and the results are available on the same day.

“The Americans have been offering this kind of service for about five years and it has proved very popular in the States,” said phlebotomy manager Sikvinder Atkar.

“We thought it was a natural step forward for us to expand our service and provide a greater choice of location for patients who don’t wish

to come into hospital, find a parking space and then have to queue for what is such a quick procedure.

“Already we have seen a wide range of patients, who visit us before they buy their groceries, and the feedback is very positive.”

He added: “We have a blood collection service which operates three times a day, taking the blood back to the lab for immediate testing and the results are returned to patients’ GPs very quickly.”

The service is currently open between 7am and 3pm on Thursdays and has the capacity to test 90 patients.

IT MIGHT look like something out of Star Wars but this little robot could make a real difference in the battle to reduce healthcare-associated infections.

Sterinis robots produce a dry mist of hydrogen peroxide to eradicate pathogenic organisms, including MRSA and C. difficile, even from hidden or inaccessible areas.

A trial in a ward at Sandwell General Hospital was so successful that the Trust has already bought six machines and there are plans to purchase a further six in the future.

In two hours 16 robots can be used to clean a whole ward and they are also very effective in cleaning side rooms, bays and even ambulances.

They can be used in conjunction with a deep clean and furniture and equipment does not even have to be removed from areas.

The machines emit particles of electrically-charged dry mist which sticks to anything underneath beds and cupboards and even curtains, and it effectively destroys viruses such as MRSA, C. difficile, E. coli, norovirus and salmonella.

AN OVERWHELMING response from the public meant the Trust held two Annual General Meetings this year to accommodate all those who wanted to come.

Members of the proposed Foundation Trust were among the 500 people who attended the two events.

They were invited to sample the new à la carte menu, which was introduced to City, Sandwell and Rowley Regis hospitals this autumn.

Chair Sue Davis said:

Almost everyone who attended the AGM, which had the highest satisfaction levels the Trust has ever received for an event, said they would like to attend a similar meeting in the future.

The AGMs were held in City’s Postgraduate Centre in the main lecture theatre, with a smaller theatre acting as an overspill where visitors could watch the proceedings on a film screen.

We were delighted with the response from the public especially all our Foundation members. The two evenings were a great success and the feedback we got from the people who attended has been very positive. The feedback suggests that people especially liked the talks from Dr Jonathan North, who gave us an insight into allergies, and Rachel Stevens, Chief Nurse, and two matrons from the Trust, who talked about how the patient experience is being improved.

Investment in a first-class serviceA STATE-of-the-art interventional radiology theatre suite has opened at City Hospital.

Vice Chair Roger Trotman unveiled a plaque to commemorate the installation of the £1-million facility.

Interventional radiology is a rapidly growing area of medicine, which often replaces open surgical procedures. Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay.

Dr Mark Moss, consultant in radiology, said: “This is cutting-edge technology and the investment

means a lot. In providing this facility for our patients we have done something that will have a large impact on our population.”

Jackie Morton, divisional general manager of Imaging praised the new installation:

Your birth in our home‘YOUR birth in our home’ was the message when Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals opened the doors on a newly refurbished integrated birth unit in City Hospital’s Maternity Unit.

All rooms in the delivery suite have been refurbished, each taking a theme from some of the country’s most popular flowers.

Bluebell, Poppy, Rose and Lavender offer expectant mums the chance to relax into their labour and enjoy the experience, with good memories of the birth of their new child.

There is also an ocean-themed water birth room, which is reminiscent of seasides and holidays.

“Giving birth is a celebration and I want every woman who comes through our door to have a great experience on the day they will remember for the rest of their lives,” explained Kathryn Gutteridge, consultant midwife for the Trust.

“The refurbishment has also led to a huge boost in staff morale as my staff are really proud of their working environment and this great spirit is in turn passed on to the women we care for,” she added.

Funding for the refurbished birth centre came from Kathryn’s consultation work for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and includes donations from the complementary therapy treatments she offers to expectant mums and staff at City and Sandwell hospitals.

Kathryn’s generosity has made the birth unit a truly memorable place in which to give birth and the thoughtful small personal touches really give it a homely and welcoming feel.

£1.6m grant for research into Parkinson’s diseaseSWBH NHS Trust is embarking on the world’s largest ever clinical trial into the effectiveness of physiotherapy and occupational therapy in Parkinson’s disease.

The Trust has received a £1.6 million grant from the Health Technology Assessment Programme, a programme aimed at researching the effectiveness of healthcare treatments and tests used in the NHS.

The grant has ensured the trial can take place as a joint project between the Trust and the University of Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit.

City Hospital-based neurologist, Professor Carl Clarke, said: “The trial will take five years to complete as there are a number of stages to go through, including recruitment and training of staff, patient recruitment, patient observation and data analysis.

“We know already that physiotherapy and occupational therapy are thought to help patients with Parkinson’s disease in different but complementary ways but what the trial is essential for is to investigate the true value of these therapies and, if proved, to ensure they are available as a treatment for all patients with Parkinson’s disease.

“The trial will assess the effects of providing both therapies to people with Parkinson’s disease in their own homes. Chosen at random, half of the people with Parkinson’s disease in the trial will receive the service straight away and half will not. Those not receiving the service immediately will have access to therapy at the end of the active phase of the study in 15 months’ time.”

Keeping our history alivePROFESSOR Carl Chinn visited Sandwell General Hospital in September to unveil a commemorative plaque on the maternity building, marking the location where the ‘Guardians of the Poor’ boardroom stood 151 years ago.

He was joined by representatives of the West Bromwich Union Paupers Memorial Committee, which was established to provide a living memorial to all the lives that were affected by involvement in the West Bromwich Union Workhouse.

Deputy of Estates Phil Foley explained: “Many people were buried in a public grave without a headstone or memorial of any form to mark their passing from this world.

“We welcome the idea of marking where the Boardroom of Guardians used to stand and are keen to work with the committee and to keep the history of the area we serve alive:”

In his speech, Professor Chinn emphasised the importance of keeping our local history alive”:.

Funded by the Local Heritage Committee, Professor Chinn and the group have set up the West Bromwich Pauper Memorial Trail, which highlights the places connected with pauperism in West Bromwich.

There are a lot of people here today who started their life in a workhouse or had relatives that experienced life in the workhouse that once stood on this site, so I would like to thank West Bromwich Pauper Memorial group and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust for their support, which has led to these relatives and other paupers of the area that were stripped of their rights as they entered the workhouse being remembered and honoured in a dignified way in their death,

Call for volunteers to help in hospitalVOLUNTEER mealtime and ward assistants are being recruited at City and Sandwell Hospitals.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust is introducing the roles as part of a drive to improve patients’ experiences on the wards.

The Trust is making a substantial investment in recruiting ward support

officers across all sites to increase staffing to the wards but is still keen for volunteers to help at meal times, giving extra support to the patients who need it most.

Volunteer mealtime assistants help patients to eat their meal and have a drink and they support the red tray scheme, which enables staff to see the patients who need help with their meals.

They also meet and greet visitors and answer the telephone, freeing up nurses to spend their time with patients.

The minimum age for volunteering on NHS hospital wards is 17, with no upper age limit. All potential volunteers will be required to attend a short discussion and provide references and will have to undertake a criminal records bureau check before going on to the wards.

Full training is given and it is hoped that individuals can commit to at least six months volunteering, with regular weekly shifts of three to four hours, at times to suit. The ideal volunteer should be able to work on his or her own initiative, possess good interpersonal skills and be a team player.

To find out more about volunteering please contact Jan Holden on 0121 507 6881 or email [email protected].
