Welcome to the second edition of EDSA Uncovered, the bi-annual Newsletter of the European Dental Students Association!!

It’s been another successful and fruitful year for EDSA with the organisation growing and expanding like never before.

April saw EDSA delegates descend upon the peaceful seaside city of Varna in Bulgaria for the 41st EDSA General Assembly and 7th EDSA Congress. Once again EDSA delegates were immersed in both cultural and social activities… and of course some dentistry!

All views expressed by EDSA Uncovered are not necessarily those of EDSA uncovered or its editor. It is very much a possibility that all views were acquired during a hazy night on the town.

This September, EDSA Delegates arrived in the Croatian capital of Zagreb for the 42nd EDSA General Assembly and 34th ADEE Annual Meeting. Eighty five students from 23 countries attended… an EDSA record, and hopefully a continuing trend for future meetings. This was

the first year that the EDSA general assembly took place over three days. Everyone agreed that this resulted in a more productive meeting as delegates had amply time to discuss important topics and not rush any decisions.

Of course the social scene was as hectic as always. Delegates had the chance to expe-rience the EDSA Cocktail for the first time in the Hemingway Bar… a real treat!!

Of course EDSA-Vision was the penultimate night out where delegates had the opportunity to unleash their musical talent! Sweden once again stole the show and won the prestigious title for another consecutive meeting!!

Hello from Cardiff!!

CARDIFF UNIVERSITY, SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY

Well this term has been a busy one both for social and study activities!! In February the

British Dental Students Association held their annual conference in Birmingham, involving some very

interesting lectures and discussions as well as fabulous fancy dress, and finishing with us dancing the night away at a James Bond-themed ball!

Since then there has been a lot of coursework and study for students in all years… all the fifth years have finished and passed with flying colours; the graduation ball is coming up so we’ll be helping them to celebrate in style of course! Lianne is off to do her vocational training in a practice on the south coast of England.

Sully and the third years have also finished all their exams and have joined the fourth years for joint clinics at the moment which seems to be working out well! The new school committee has been voted in and so they are settling into their new roles, whilst us in the fourth year begin to start working for our final exams in September, and researching our final year projects.

Coming up before the summer holiday we have the dental school inter-year football tournament (potential practice for another EDSA Olympics?!) and the end of year fancy dress pubcrawl.

Gina and I will miss out on Zagreb but are sending a new delegate to get involved in EDSA activities – we’ll look forward to seeing you in Slovenia!

DUBLIN DENTAL SCHOOL & HOSPITAL

So its been another hectic couple of months in Dublin. The DOVE (Dental Overseas Voluntary

Elective) which sees 4th year students travel worldwide to help out with various dental charities continued with

more great nights out to raise much needed funds.

We had a “Night at the races” at Shelbourne greyhound race track. Here, we had a chance to enjoy a pleasant dinner followed by some serious gambling.

There was also a Karaoke night where a certain Mo Kumar had to have the microphone forcibly removed from his clutches.

April saw Dublin host the Irish Dental Students Association (IDSA) annual intervarsity ball. Students from Belfast and Cork, the other two dental schools in Ireland, descended on Dublin for a weekend of fun. The Friday night allowed students from all three schools to meet each other in City Bar, next door to Trinity College, and a great night was had by all. Then on Saturday night we had the ball in the Hilton Hotel. Once again we had the opportunity to chat with our colleagues and make new friends. Next year the IDSA Ball will be hosted by the crew in University College Cork (UCC).

The 6th of June was a very proud day for all the Dublin EDSA delegates, past and present! Paddy Barlow, a former Irish delegate graduated with Honours… much to the disbelief of many! I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Paddy and wish him every success in the future.

UK dental schools

BRITISH DENTAL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

At the 41st Meeting in Varna, the British Dental Student Association (BDSA) successfully

applied for the UK to become a full member of the EDSA. Previously Wales had membership and Leeds and Kings

College have acted as observers at meetings. The new status now means full membership for all fifteen of the UK dental schools which should hopefully lead to much wider participation from our side of Europe!

Founded in 1942, the BDSA is a student body run by an executive committee and representatives from each UK dental school. Promotion of the educational and social interests of UK Dental Students is the main focus of the association. Establishing and facilitating liaison with dental students within the European community and throughout the world is also a key area of our work.

The BDSA organizes two annual events. The upcoming dates are:Sports Day (Leeds) 10-12 October 2008Conference (Manchester) 19-22 February 2009

VARNA DENTAL SCHOOL, BULGARIA

The newest building of Faculty of Dental Medicine in Europe welcomed its students on June 9,

2008.

The faculty of Dental Medicine in Varna already has its impatiently

expected new building and necessary equipment. The new fully equipped, six-storey school houses twelve scientific sectors (prosthetic dentistry, conservative dental treatment, oral and maxillo-facial surgery, paediatric dental medicine, orthodontics, periodontology, allergology and oral pathology), twenty studying labs, two halls and X-ray department. The academic faculty consists of outstanding specialists from all over the country.

Being such a young organization, Dental Medicine Student Association - Varna, hopes to become part of European Dentist Students family as soon as possible and in this way to introduce our hospitable faculty and kind, curious and of course tooth-aching patients to you!

European Visiting Program

EVP BUCHAREST-SKOPJE

On the 31st of March to the 5th of April 2008 Romanian students had the opportunity

to experience Macedonian lifestyle and see the Skopje Dental Faculty. The team participating in this EVP program was

made up of three students (Alina Dragomir, Vanessa Dima, and Marius Mihalache) who are in their fourth year of study.

To begin with, there are several ways to reach Skopje: by train and car via Sofia, via Belgrade or by air, but there is no direct route. Whichever choice you make, hurry up; there are so many things to be seen. We chose the first way, so the trip took 20 long hours, but when we finally got there friendly faces were expecting us (Dragan, Dragica, Mence and Goce). We really experienced Macedonian lifestyle as they took us to their homes.

On the evening we arrived, there was an April Fools’ Day Festival and the inner plaza was very crowded with cheerful people wearing costumes. The second day, after a long and relaxing sleep; we got acquainted with their university.Exploring the Macedonian capital

We took part in Prosthetics and Periodontology clinic, so we had the chance to see some things about their practice. We found out very proudly that their assistants have learned Prosthetics from a Romanian Bratu book.

One morning very early we had an appointment with the Vice Dean. This gave us an opportunity to find out a few things about their faculty managing system. There are almost 50 students in each year and all of them, even if there are on state payment or not, have to pay a fee, so that the faculty can provide them with dental materials to work with. Also patients coming to be treated in the university have to pay and they have a discount of 20% if they choose to be treated by students, but because of this system students have very few patients.

Meeting with the faculty

Along with the academic aspect of our trip we also had time to visit some of Skopje fabulous tourist attractions. We went to the hill overlooking the city, where we could see the remains of the citadel. We visited some of the local museums also. What we really insisted on seeing was the Turkish bazaar. We reached it by crossing the fifteen century Turkish stone bridge over the Vardar River linking the old and new parts of town. There are a lot of small shops in the narrow streets, cafes serving Turkish-style coffee and plenty of souvenirs.

It’s a pity we did not stay longer… But we promise to come back soon to visit Ohrid, the city all Macedonians are very proud of!

we have to thank everybody: older friends we met back in Bucharest when they came to Romania (Dragan, Mence, Ivan and Goce), and new friends we made there (Dragica). Also a big hug for all your friends and colleagues that made us feel so welcomed!

Prepare for 1st Congress in June 2009

KOSICE DENTAL SCHOOL, SLOVAKIA

Slovakia, the new EDSA member, has been busy for the last few months. There is a trip, twice a

year, for students of dentistry from Košice. The second one took place in October, in Danišovce, in an area called

Slovak paradise. A nice chance to spend a few days together, to know each other better and to talk about things we don’t have time to talk about at school. “Hot news“ from the EDSA Zagreb meeting has been „on the topic“ too. Beside social life we have been preparing two events happening in the autumn.

“Day for Health” is a yearly event. On the 21st - 23rd of November 2008, students from1st – 6th year have been available in the public area of the shopping center in Košice. Our department provided people with information about the quality of their oral health, as well as training kids on cleaning techniques, and answering questions… such a fun and great feeling!!!

It all happened in cooperation with the Association of medicine students in Košice.

Dental trip to Danišovce

On the 26th of November, in cooperation with Colgate and the Slovak Dental Chamber, students studying Dental Medicine in Košice and in Bratislava went to educate pupils at primary schools. Groups of 3-4 students went to primary schools where the basics of oral hygiene, prevention, and the importance of good oral health were demonstrated. We have been working with 1000 kids in Košice and our colleagues from Bratislava have done the same activities in our Capital. We would like to continue with this project into the future!

Students from Košice are also working on the 1st International meeting for students of medicine, which will be held from 23-25 June 2009 in conjunction with celebrations in honour of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. All of you are more than welcome!!!

Eidfjord is one of the most breathtaking and stunning Norwegian places, surrounded by rivers, mountains and waterfalls, close to the fjords and the glaciers. For a second year it was also the setting of the Curaprox dental student summer camp, offering adventure activities,

nature experiences and long-lasting international friendships.

The first week of July saw sixty students from Finland, Latvia, Russia, Germany, Denmark and Bulgaria gather in the FlatEarth scenic campsite to test their fear level each day in a different thrilling activity. A unique experience was the White Water jump, where you merely threw yourself over the edge of a cliff towards the waterfall. A wilderness tour consisted of a daylong glacier expedition, including hiking, walking on blue ice and ice climbing in the deep glacier crevasses. Further incredible challenges were the whitewater rafting and sea kayaking on the swift currents and lakes of the high mountain plateau. For those who were less audacious a boat fishing trip was organised along with some climbing/abseiling and archery.

During the last day, students had the chance to go hiking to the most famous and magnificent waterfalls in Norway, the Vøringsfossen Waterfall, which drops 182 meters, where sun and water create a beautiful view towards a rainbow into the valley.

Besides the numerous sport events, oral hygiene and prophylaxis were the main topics of the week. Several workshops discussing and stressing the significance of having clean teeth and healthy gums were organized, followed by an interesting demonstration of the whole range of Curaprox oral care products.

One of the guest speakers was Dr Kirsten Warrer from Arhus School of Dentistry, President of the Danish Society of Periodontology, who gave a lecture about the role of dental plaque biofilm in oral health and its reduction through effective oral hygiene measures.

The campsite provided an excellent atmosphere for students to spend evenings cooking on the barbeque and drinking beer in the open-air. During the summertime Norway gives way to an incredible feeling at night- it never gets dark. The sun stays up and at midnight you can see clearly, resulting in many partying all night long.

After a fascinating week, full of activities and amusing gatherings, students left exhausted but in enthusiastic anticipation of the next journey.

Everyone is warmly welcome to become part of the latest cityscape adventure- the very first joint EDSA-Curaprox summer camp will take place in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen during the first week of August next year!

We will be looking forward to meeting you there!

The French Dental Ski Trip

CRIT DREAM

In France, the 42nd Crit will take place between the 21st and 28th

of March 2009, in a great ski resort in the Alps: “Les Orres”. It’s the winter championship for French dental students.

The Dental Criterium is a week where 1000 students of the 16 dental faculties are in competition to defend their universities.

An average day starts with a 10 o’clock rise, where people have the chance to get in some training for the competition. At 12h, the “Pot des Facs” starts. Every day, two or three faculties cook specialties originating from their cities. For Nancy and Strasbourg: Sauerkraut and Bier, Lyon and The Chartreuse, Clermont-Ferrand and aligot, etc...

When some people are eating great food, others are competing. Every day, there is a new competition at 13h: slalom, super giant slalom, giant slalom, biathlon, snowboarding, big air, border cross...The competitors are supported by all representatives from their faculty. When the competition is finished, the “Resto d’Altitude” opens its door. The Crit organizing committee prepare for the “Criteux” snow games: human baby foot, luge track, sprint with snowshoes and a lot of surprises. During the games, plenty of hot wine is drunk from the nearby restaurant.

21h, “what's happened? Who is knocking on my door?” “Hello, I'm a student of Paris V, who sleeps in this apartment?” “Nancy sleeps there, come on, we will show you our specialties: The Mirabelle Alcohol and the macaroni!”

For two hours, students visit the 16th faculties of France: Bordeaux, Brest, Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nancy, Nantes, Nice, Paris (V & VII), Reims, Rennes, Strasbourg, and Toulouse.

The night comes. The big party starts! The “Chapiteau”, a big marquee, where DJ's play music, and girls and boys dance all night! Every day, a video is projected to show the resume of the day. But we never forget that Criterium is a competition! Each night, 2 or 3 faculties do a show. It must be in relation to the theme of the Crit. Last year, it was: The Crit Dream (which consisted of adventures to jungle forests and toy cities!!)... This year: The seven deadly sins!

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA DENTAL SCHOOL

The main activity of the National Association is the annual Congress, which takes place every

July in a different dental school. Last year’s congress was held at the school I study in: Santiago de Compostela.

It was a huge success and I’m sure this upcoming congress will be successful too.

The event lasts for one week. Here students have the opportunity to attend lectures presented by local and international professors, have some practical training (mostly about Implantology or Endodontics). But there was also time to meet some new friends from other universities and to enjoy a very nice social program!!!

Such an event requires a very big effort which results in only one such congress a year. As a replacement, every dental school has its own “Dental Days”. Both of these events are very successful among Spanish students!!!

The Spanish national association (ANEO) also publishes a magazine every three months which is also extremely popular at all dental schools!!

Compostela, apart from hosting last year’s congress we also had our “Dental Days” in March. Nearly all students participated. Our professors were very well-disposed to give lectures but there were also professors from other dental school like Valencia, Madrid or Granada present!!! The practical training was about Implants (we trained with pig jaws) and Urgency situations in a Dental Clinic.

It was very fruitful!!!

And in May we did some volunteer work at an elementary school, teaching little children to brush their teeth properly! We also had supportive material such as comics and videos to help us with our task!! It was a lot of fun!!!

National student congress

ACTA, AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

After the last edition of EDSA Uncovered, the first national congress for dental students in

the Netherlands was held. At a centrally located hotel, students from all three faculties, Amsterdam, Groningen

and Nijmegen gathered together for workshops and interesting lectures. Students were informed about the latest techniques in implant dentistry and radiology. We also got the chance to work with CAM/CAM technology, thereby designing our own crowns on computer screens. It was a very fun and interesting day!

ACTA Amsterdam is growing. Its main building, dated from 1968, is getting too small and needs a lot of maintaining. Therefore, ACTA has decided to move to a new and bigger location, situated next to the VU University Medical Center in the South of Amsterdam. The new building is currently under construction and is planned to open in 2010. Artists impressions are released and look very promising!

Hopefully you can all see it yourself in September 2010, when Amsterdam is hosting the 46th EDSA meeting!

THESSALONIKI DENTAL SCHOOL

This semester wonderful things happened at our School.

In May, we had the Congress of Hellenic Scientific Association of Dental Students (EEFOE) which was a great success both on a scientific

and social level. In April, in collaboration with King’s College, 25 students from our school had a fruitful trip to London. They met and conversed with Prof. St. Challacombe, Dr. L. Cabot, Prof. G. Proctor and Pr. N. Wilson. They visited clinics and research labs at Guy’s Hospital and Dental institute (at Denmark hill). For next year’s destination… we are open for any suggestions!!!

The program for voluntary work as dentists, on various islands and touristy places, has seen many applications. With this program 4th and 5th years students have the opportunity to offer their dental services to communities all over Greece, discover new places, and have their accommodation and meals provided for free.

This May a new estate began: ‘Continuing education’ from our school staff, giving the chance to old and new dentists to be informed about new methods and knowledge.

of faculty curriculum structure and ways to solve them. This discussion had great resonance and a path for sincere communication between two sides has opened.

Every summer, when the exams are finished, students from Aristotle University go camping at Posseidi. It is really cheap (1 euro per day), everybody is there and party goes on 24 hours per day.

PROMODENTIS – NOVI SAD

The Exhibition of Dentistry Equipment with the Scientific-Professional Meeting

“Promodentis – Novi Sad” will contribute to the joining of the latest technical and professional

achievements in the field of dentistry-prosthetics, periodontics, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, implantology and other branches of dentistry.

The fairs have been marked by the First Congress of Dentists of Vojvodina organized by the Novi Sad Fair and the Society of Physicians of Vojvodina and the Society of Self-employed Dental Technicians of Serbia and along with the Assembly of Vojvodina. This Congress, held at the Grand Hall of the “Master” Congress Centre, comprised of 36 lectures with 43 participants from Serbia, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Germany, the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The supplementary segment of this scientific program was the poster session with 58 works.

During the past several months the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) has had the privilege of initiating a relationship and collaborating on several projects with the European Dental Student Association (EDSA). We would like to applaud you as an organization for your

forward thinking mentality and your efforts in; serving humanity through volunteer work, improving student movement, advocating for patient rights, and bettering dental education in Europe.

ASDA is the largest organization in the United States solely dedicated to being a strong and active voice for dental student concerns. It is structured as a network of local chapters based at each of the 56 U.S. dental schools and is uniquely geared to respond to the concerns of its members at all levels.

Two student delegates from each chapter voice the ideas and concerns of their constituents to the House of Delegates for action in the form of resolutions. As a result of these resolutions, ASDA publishes policy statements and takes action on many issues, including access to care, licensure reform and ethics.

Membership in ASDA introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, education, and advocacy. The power of ASDA’s message is based on representation of more than 16,000 members- 86% of all U.S. dental students. ASDA’s relationship with the American Dental Association (ADA) on all levels of the tripartite remains a strong and vital link for the association.

ASDA’s Board of Trustees continues to work on implementing the association’s first strategic plan that was developed in 2006. The top four priorities identified by the Board of Trustees for 2008 are dental education issues and student advocacy; membership development; advocacy for patients; and website development. The Board and Councils have developed strategies to achieve the goals and objectives for these priorities.

ASDA is dedicated to engaging its members in efforts to influence legislative and regulatory issues relating to dentistry. In order to generate awareness among ASDA’s members about legislation that affects their future profession, the Legislative Grassroots Network will communicate information about key legislative issues by utilizing ASDA’s publications and interactive features of the website. ASDA councils that focus on the areas of licensure, ethics and dental education are involved in conducting surveys and distributing fact sheets and letters in order to learn and communicate about these issues.

Dental students quickly learn the rewards of advocating on behalf of their patients, and ASDA strives to serve as an information resource. ASDA is currently developing educational materials and investigating funding opportunities for “Access Aging America,” a program outlined by ASDA’s Immediate Past President Dr. Brooke Loftis focusing on treating the oral health of the aging population. Communicating regularly about advocacy opportunities, such as Oral Cancer Walks and diversity

initiatives, helps set the tone for continued involvement once students become practicing dentists.

By getting students involved in organized dentistry while they’re still in dental school and by showing first-hand how they have the power to guide their profession, ASDA inspires students to continue to be leaders throughout their career with a lifelong commitment to organized dentistry and the American Dental Association.

1st EDSA Summer Camp: Curaprox and EDSA have initiated a new cooperation and are going to organize a joint summer camp for all dental students during the first week of August in Copenhagen,

Denmark.

EDSA New Partnership: A close cooperation has been formed between EDSA and Integrated Dental Holdings, one of the UK’s leading Dental Groups with more than 250 practices, over 900 dentists looking

after around 1.5 million patients. IDH offers a wide range of exciting careers for dentists and dental students and are always looking to expand their team.

EDSA new Logo: Following a three month open Logo Community design contest and forty five submitted logotypes, the EDSA Executive Committee and all Delegates voted and adopted a new Logo!

EDSA/IADS Cooperation: A Memorandum of Understanding between EDSA and IADS was signed during the 42nd EDSA Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia. The Understanding will result in a closer relationship between

the two organisations. We hope that this Memorandum will initiate more combined projects in the future such as the volunteer work project in Eastern Europe. The biggest one, however, will be the joint EDSA-IADS Meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia in March 2009!
