Working for Immigrant Literacy DevelopmentWinter 2008, Volume 4, Issue 2

The main focus of our program is to teach students how to speak, read, and write English. Through the use of weekly tutorial sessions, W.I.L.D. helps immi-grant teenagers and their families transition into America. In addition, our tutors act as positive role models and help our students through their adolescent years. The kids are separated into three different levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Beginning focuses on introducing students to the basics of the English language and to help them build upon this foundation via worksheets based on the rules of grammar. This level is primarily geared towards familiarizing the students with the elements of the English language.

We build on the basic grammar skills learned in the beginning level and we try to develop writing skills needed to write coherent essays. Our students have a basic understanding of English; it is our goal to try and hone the skills so that they will be ready to creatively write in the advanced level.

Advanced level engages students that are verbally proficient in English and can more or less compose grammatically correct paragraphs. We focus on critical thinking and writing skills (both academic and creative), public speaking/debate and emphasize college access for students.

Angela Guo I like play QQ. QQ is computer game, is can listen music, can read book, can talk to different country people, can play different funny game. I can have my own space. I learn the how play QQ, how control. Children can play, but first need have computer, and Internet, and need money pey for. I talk to friend and family and school mate and group. can Look Friend, can call Friend. I talking the about game, clothing, space, If have some question can ask groups. Alfred Han My favorite game is soccerball. We kick the ball to the other person. We kick the ball to the goalie. I play with my friends. I taught myself. I need to run fast. I kick the ball high. Soccer is hard to learn. I am good in running. I run super fast. I block the goal. I play with my friends. Sometimes we win. Sometimes the other team wins.

Pauline Lao My favorite game is Brave heart. I like Brave heart because you can work together with your parther. You have to go outside to play Brave heart with other people. You need to get the Frisbee to your side. You need a Frisbee and cone to play. As much people can play.

Kitty Lu My favorite game is Cooking Mama on my DS. I like it because I like to cook and have fun. You can play it if you have the game and a DS. It has a practice mode. You can play the practice mode and learn how to make something to ea. Then you can use the make mode. When you are done you can get points for how you did. You can become

creative on food by play. Being creative is great, so I like playing Cooking Mama.

Raymond Lu At night Mario and Luigi go to sleep. At the morning everyone wake up but Mario and Luigi were sleeping. Mario’s friend went to school. The teacher asks, “Where is Mario and Luigi?” Mario’s friend told the teacher that Mario is sleeping. Mario and Luigi got tired out.

Karshin Luong My favorite game ever is basketball. Basketball is a physical sport. I like playing it because it is fun and easy to play. To play the game you have to dribble the ball and

pass the ball to the other people in your team. Then you have to shoot the ball into the hoop by throwing the ball into the hoop. In the game you learn about teamwork and how to focus because you have to pass

and focus on the game so that you can score. There are some rules that you have to follow in the game too. The rules are that you cannot go out of the big square and you have to dribble ball. You can’t hold the ball for too long. To score points, you have to shoot the ball into the hoop. If you do then you get two points for being in the painted circle. If you’re out of the circle

you get 3 points. Anyone can participate in the game if they are old enough to play. The equipment you need are good shoes, a ball, a hoop, and a team. You have to have some skills to play. Also you need to be fast, and have good concentrations, and be good passing, throwing, and jumping.

Carman Tang I ply basketball with friends. We play n the gym. We past around and shoot the hoop. I taught myself how to play basketball. It is hard to shoot into the hoop. People block me. I get tired and drink Gatorade. I shoot into hoop, bounce the ball and steal the ball. When we make basket, we get 2 points. Anyone can play.

Derek Thai My favorite game is kickball. You have to kick a cherry ball in the other persons goal. That is you play. But the rules

are you can’t kick the ball on a kids heads. I learned not to kick balls on kids heads. I like playing it because it is fun. Kickball is like soccer but in kickball you can pick up the ball and in soccer you can not pick up the ball you need kicking skills and blocking skills.

Jeffery Vuong My favorite game is basketball because I like playing games with many people. In this game you have to dribble the ball when you are running and shot the ball into the basket. Basketball teaches me how to focus on things and be a part of a team. For example, you have to concentrate on other basket to get the ball in and to pass the ball to other people so they can shoot it in. The way you get three points in this game is to shoot behind the line. To get two points you have to shoot in front of the line. Anyone can play. You need shoes, clothes, and

a hoop to play this game. You also need some skills. Sometimes you need to be tall or just have good aim. Also you have to be very fast to block the person on the other team. If you get hurt by the other team it is a foul.

Fang You Xie My favorite sport is golf because I like to hit the golf ball. Playing golf helps me relax. For example, if I am angry at someone I vent my anger at the ball. I imagine that the ball is a person’s head. If you want to get a point you need to hit the ball into the hole. If you want to play golf, you need to have good hitting skills.

Kensen Yan In my free time, I will play computer games, my favorite computer game is World of Warcraft. World of Warcraft is cool. I started playing it last year. You have to control the character to kill monsters for getting the Exp(s). Exp(s) were use for level up. When your level was up, you could lean the new skills. And there’s a other way to level up, do the quests. Every times when finish the quest, then you will get the Exp(s) and sometimes there has supplies for you. The max level is 70, I have three 70s now. The character can wear the gears, make the character

stronger. There’s 7 levels in gears, the grey gears, are the worst gears; white gears sucks too, but it’s better than grey gears; the green gears, it’s not bad gears, then after green is blue, after blue is purple, after purple is the highest level gears orange! Not everyone can having that, you have to kill the big monster, to get that orange gears, we need 25 people to kill him! There’s 8 classes in it: Warrior, Mage, Priest, Warlock, Paladin, Hunter, Shaman, Rogue and Druid. I have a priest, he’s my first 70, in the game, the first 70 that call main. My priest’s gears were good, all are purples. I learned something from this game, when you can’t do something by yourself, then other people will help you. If

you help him, he helps you. This game is awesome, cool. Every one could play this game, if you have computer (good computer!), internet, money (you have to pay for it, $15 per month). It’s a good game, try it!

Yu Ping Ye I like play Mario Grams, Mario gams is cool. The have

foodball, driver car….the gams form Japan. Everone play this gams. The sister by form me. I werer my brother. The brother Tell me like play the games He do play car Game and foodball games My ancon know my birther play the Game. My birthe thir her how do play This Gams. INTERMEDIATE

If you were to take a trip, where would you go?

Marisela Bocanegra If I could runaway I would go to Victorville. Its about 2 hours away. I would go to my cousine house. I would go to see my cousine I miss them. I would go to ride on the ponies. I would get a little break from my house. I would take my friend Samantha. I would take her becuse she is my best friend. I would take her becuse Samantha and my cousine Carolina are good. My plan would be about geting there. I would ern some

money. I would pack my clothes in my backpack. I would leave after school. I would take the bus to get there. I would call my anut to come and pick me up. I would think if I want to stay. I would wait 2 months after I would think if I liked it I would stay. But if I don’t like it. I would call my mom. And explain to her. I would tell her that I got on the wrong bus and did not relized it until I got to VictorVille. And then I called my anut. That was how I got there.

Emily Chang If I would go to Candyland I would bring Tiffany and Megan. I will go there because hello is Candyland it’s

full of candy and a whole lot of sweets. I would also bring Nimol, Linh, Lusha and Jasmine. First, I would plan to bring a lot of other sweets and clothes. I will also bring drinks like smoothies. I would also bring a lot of candy. Second, the candy that is going to be there is going to be M&Ms, Skittles, Snickers, Reeses, Runts, Sweet Tarts, Twix and Fun Dips lollipop. There will be really good candy there. I’m going through the wardrobe. That’s how I’m going to get to Candyland. It is going to be a slide just to go to Candyland. The wardrobe will be way easy to go there. Then, if I’m cold then go back out and get like a jacket, sweater, or a coat.

Jasmine Chi I would take Sanlie if I went to CandyLand. I would take Vivian, Jenny, Chloe, Nancy, and Kelly. And I would meet Tiffany there. Then we would rule the world of candy. I want to go there because I like candy. And because it could be like a fairytale land. And because It my imaginary land, I would want to go because I want a candy castle and there is raing m&m’s there and skittles rainbow. I would go threw the wardrobe to Candy Land like Narnia. And we don’t need to pack anything because if we need clothes we just get it from the wardrobe. After I would bring Megan, Emily, Adam, Alien, Annie, Akinasaurus, Brian, Kaylee, Priscillia, Brian, Jafon, Faya, Biarea, Branden, Brad, Cody, Matthew, and My whole family. And it CandyLand we will eat all the candy there then all the candy on earth!

Jenny Chuang Today my parents, friends, family, and I are going to camp. In the car, we were planning what to do at the camp. We came up with a lot of ideas, but only 3 ideas were chosen. We bought a lot of stuff like food, drinks, money, sleeping bags, camera, jacket, clothes, computer(labtop), bowls, chopstick, etc. When we first got there on the first day, we unpacked and we decied to go biking, so we ride bike up the hill, down the road, around the lake, and river. There is a great view, so I took some pictures of things. I was kind of tired, but I kept on riding the bike anyways. Then at last we went to the gift shop, and bought some gift.

On the second day we planned to go hiking. My friends and I start to look for hiking sticks. My sister made me carry everyone’s lunch, then we rode bikes to the place and start hiking. When we got to the top it had pass lunch time, but we ate our lunch

anyways. We look around the view, it was nice, the water up here is really fresh and cold. I was really tired when I got home, we walked 5 hours, but it’s worth it. The last we were too tired, so we just play around the lake and river. My friends, and I went to swim, the water was cold, but soon we got use to it. In the water I found some pretty rocks and I see a lot of people having fun. The trip was fun, my family and friends enjoyed the camping trip just like we. I believe next time it will be as fun as before. I learned how to do some stuff myself with out my parents helping. Next time I will bring more people, so they can have fun like me.

Adam Dang If I would travel. To a place It would be Disneyland. It is an awsome place, It is awsome cause they have rides and plays and other. In this essay I am going to write about why I choose this location, who would be going with, and what I will do. If I went to disneyland I would not go there alone. I would bring my Mom and Dad and other family members. I would bring my mom and dad cause the can take care of me. And that is why I would being them with me. I choose this location cause I would be fun to stay there.

Then I would get to go on rides and go to the arcades. I would get to go to adventure land, tomorrowland, toon town, and Fronteir land. They also have plays and shows. Thats why I would go to disneyland. it fun. And my mom and dad would take cause I Don’t Have a Car to drive ther.

Kevin Guerrero I would go to Hawaiia. I would go to Hawaiia because its Beautiful and awesome. I would go to different place in Hawia. I would go to volcano natinal park and the beutiful beaches. I wood eat food. I would eat coconut, pork, mash potatoes, spegghetti and spam. I would wear a lei and Hawiian shirts. I would wear blue and red hawiian shirts and wear blue red and white leis.

Christian Flores My essay is about “six flags is fun” because roller coaster are cool, hang out with my coursin, and food and drink are good but expensive. When I went to six flags, the only thing I did was to ride the roller coasters. My top 4 rollercoaster are Galieth, scream, X, jaguar. Galieth, Is high and fast but doen’t have loops. Scream, Is kind of high and fast with a lot of loops. X, Is weird because you go backward and fast. Jaguar, is super fast, and looks like boomerang. Then we hang out with my cousin. We do a lot of think for example, talk, play around, and walk in six

flag. We talk about the girl that were in six flag, some of them were hot and other find. My cousin were fooly around with girl and one girl got mad and we ran away. Then, we walk slowly and talking about our last ride.

Emmanuel Flores When I woke up I told my parents that I wanted to go to Mexico. Then my parents gave me 18,000 dollars to go to Mexico. When I went to the airport I was happy but kind of sad because my family wasn’t going to go. When I was about to leave I told my family I was going to Colima, Guadalajara, Las Aguas, Frias, and going hunting. After I said good-bye to my parents, I got in the airplane and I couldn’t wait to get out the airplane because I had too much fun thing to do. When I got out the airplane my aunt Sussy picked me up and then I went to Colima where it was fun. My cousins were there, and they’re were excited to see me. I visited all my relative so then I could play with my cousins. Then I went to my house where my dad construct a house there. All my cousins wanted to sleep over so they

did. We had so much fun, and we went to sleep until 2:00 A.M. because of the video games I had. When I woke up, I was the first one to wake up. Then I went to take a shower and brush my teeth. Then I woke up my cousins with a microphone and they got scared. So I told them lets go to Guadalajara and they said, “yes.” But we didn’t have a car, so I bought a Motorcycle for each of my cousins and we drove to Guadalajara. When we got there we went to the ranch, and it was like a forest. There were Cows, Horses, Bulls, Chicken, and Rooster. Then I visited my dad’s family, and they were happy. They asked where are our parents and I told them that they are in U.S.A. then I left and we went to Chivas Stadium to see Chivas play. Then Chivas won 6 to 0 with Morelia. I was happy and excited. We bought hot dogs, popcorn, and nachos, to enjoy the game so we could leave excited and showing off. So then I got all the soccer player autographs and they were excited seeing and my cousins.

Gary Lung If I were to take a trip, I would go to los vegas. I chose the location specifically because of the casino. What I like about the casino are that they have games and food

similary, I like casino’s because of the shows and show girls. I also hear of that vegas is the city of lights and like Disneyland for adults.i think if I go, I would feel

more independence. It would be difficult for someone my age to go to las vegas, so I made a good plan I would use my Chinese new years money to book a plane because I

can not drive it. I have about five hundred dollars so I would be able to stay at a hotel for five nights only, if the hotel cost less then fity dollars. I would take clothes, my gameboy SP, gamecube, DS, gameboy color, my games to play and my ps2. that way I can have fun no matter the time of day. I would go on the trip by myself the main reason that it would cost to much money. If took anyone else with me also. They might annoy me I think it is better this way.

Ayin Romero Going to Hawaii is a wonderful place to be. In Hawaii, there is many things to do, such as going to beach living in the hotels and visiting the volcanos. Going to the beach is a great place to be because could swim and surf. Swimming under the water is fun because you can see the fishes and all kinds of interesting

plants. Surfing the bug waves in Hawaii beaches is the best thing I ever done. Living in the hotels is a lot of fun because you could order a lot of food. The beds are really big and soft. I could swim in the pool when ever I want to swim in it.

Zayin Romero If I go to a trip I would go to halo E world because I will meat master shife and I want to see arvitor and tell him to take a space shipe and take some alians and kill the all the people frome earth only some people and I will make my own city and all the people would be my slave and men is so poring I will make a war with the human and aliane and will kill the human so it would be so interesting with all the blood going erre were and you could se people scriming for help.

Michelle Shen If I could take a trip to anywhere I want, I would like to take a trip to Taiwan, because I like Taiwan. I

remember one time I was watching tv and there was a commercial about Taiwan. When I saw that commercial I started like Taiwan. Taiwan’s envirnment and cities were very beautiful. Also it has many tall building in Tai Bei. Tai Bei is a city in Taiwan. The tallest building in Taiwan is Tai Bei lol. This building is very huge and tall. Everyone love that building because its repersent Taiwan. Taiwan has many delicious foods. Such as dimsums, snacks, drinks, also hot pot. Taiwan has the most popular dimsums. These dimsums are tasty and yummy. Such as dumplins, fried eggs with ketchut, chowmein, and fried rice. They has many different kinds of ice creams too. To parpare for a trip to Taiwan, the first step I am going to go, is to go online and search for the best deal. The cheapest airfare, the best season that I can see flowers are blooming. Second I make a call to order the airfare ticket. Finally I pack for the trip. In conclusion I will also invite a friend to my house and tell her to go to the trip with me. So I would have to be lonely.

Megan Thai If I were to take a trip I would go to Hawaii. The beautiful beaches at Hawaii and the sites. The volcanos and their cultures are amazing. First I would plan my trip. I would take my friends with me. A week or 2 before I would first but my tickets. Then 3 days before the trip I would pack up. After, it’s time for the trip. I’ll board the plane (first class). After a few hours I arrive at Hawaii. I take a tour around that beautiful island. After the whole day I check into the best hotel in the city. Finally, after 3 weeks I have to go home. I will miss Hawaii, but I also miss my family, back at California. Next time, I’ll come back to Hawaii.

Isaac Torres My essay is about why Mexico is cool. Some of the reasons of why Mxico is cool that you could do almost

anything like driving a car when you are 13

year old, going to the beach or going to the museum. Driving is a fun thing to do especially when you could drive when you are 13 or older. Mexico is the most coolest place in the whole entire world. You don’t need a

license to drive a car. You also could drive as fast as a Jet or even faster, and if a chaotas stops you nothing will happen to you. Going to the museum is another thing you could do in Mexico, going to the museum is a fun thing to do because you could see real human and animals bones you could also play games like playing answering question like are you smarter than a 5th grader.

Tiffany Truong The place I would go is candyland. I am going to tell you about who I would take, how I would get there, and what I would do once I’m there. I guarantee you would want to go there once I’m there. I would bring so many people there. Such as: Evelyn, Sophia, Joanne, Jenny, Kayla, Katherin, Gina, Trina, Tacy, Trisha, Elsie, Lusha, Emily, and Linh. I would bring them because they also like candy. When I went I would meet Megan and Jasmine there. There would be lots of candy. There are M&M’s, skittles, reeses, smarties, sweettart, nerds, runts, and many many many more. I like those candies because they acre crunchy,

sweet, tasty, and tangy. The wardrobe would take me there, the wardrobe into narnia has a secret passway and that would be how I was going to get there. Once I’m there I would eat all the candies there. That would be where I would go. It would be fun to because all my friends are going to be there.

Jason Xiong If I can go anywhere I would go to Ancient egypt. First, I plan a time suit, a Universal remote control, Treasure map, and Flying boots. I would go with gabe, because he could be my follower and he could find food for me. He could be the lord. I use time sue to get to egypt. I bring a camra to take a picture and bring hieroglyphics to translate the language. I want to go there because to rule I’m going to

look for treasure and over throw the pharoh and be the pharoh. I will kill the pharoh to over throw him. I his soul in the soul box. I make egypt by protecting the city and improve the school and change the law no one could come to the pharoh pyrmaid. Only my guest and my friend could to the pyramid. In conclusion, I plan to get to egypt by then I will make a time suit and I would bring gabe and I would protect my pyramid. I would improve the school and I wouldn’t let anyone come in my pyrmaid beside my friend.

ADVANCED

Brainstorm on an interesting idea for a store that would sell your product. What would be special about it? Why would your customers visit your store? Include details and be creative!

Aileen Hang Mystery Books Store - If I could own a store it would be about mystery books. I would have different characters on the wall and the ceiling and the wall are going to be baby blue. There is also going to be a special room that is quiet to read and they are going to be on beanie bags for them to sit on. I am going to sell only current books and not vintage books.

Lusha Huang Stuffed Animals and Books Store - My store’s name is called Teddy Bears and Books but don’t let he name fool you. The Teddy Bears part of the name means that there is all kinds of stuffed animals from stuffed armadillos to stuffed zebras. This store will also be like a library. In the books section you can choose a book and sit and read it for a while and if you want it you can buy it. Be careful it price of some of the books and stuffed animals are very expensive.

Jessica Moc Japanese Anime Store - In the front you will see a person on back of the sign and glass windows. Showing a TV with different kinds of anime, when you go inside you will see one

side with anime book, the other

side anime on DVD. All the way in the back there is a place to sit and drink in the café. And in the middle there is the cash register.

Kim Nguyen Books/Manga

Store - My store would sell manga books only. On the ceiling would be a list of all the manga books I have, it’ll be typed like a wallpaper. Huge boom box with music. Every hour would be a different kind of music like R&B, classic, rock, punk, etc. On the sides it would be life size pictures of anime and the background would be in Japan. The store would have a Japanese life style. ON the side there would be a sushi bar. Every book would have the whole series or what that series have so far. There would be tables where they can eat and read. If they get the books dirty they have to pay for it. They would have short tables, and they would sit on a pillow.

Samantha Ruiz Perfume Store - My store’s name is “Perfume Workshop”. In this store you can make your own perfume. The price would be based on the size of your perfume bottle and how much perfume you put in it. People love coming in this store to create their own perfume and the scent.

Raymond Sy Crayons Store - I would sell crayons in my own store called Crayon Land. The security posts are large crayons. I would sell 1,000 crayon packs. There will be a variety of 5 pack crayons, 24 pack crayons, and 100 pack crayons. Inside will have crayons and colorful backgrounds. I would have modern day crayons around the room and vintage crayons in a basket in the middle.

Vivian Sy Cell Phone Store - I would sell cell phones and in my store, it will have a lot of cell phone, and my store will be called T.G.R.C.P. which means the Greatest Random Cell Phone. In my store there will be floating cell phones and cell phones on the bottom which the top are for

the display and my cell phones on the bottom will be the ones for sale. Since it is almost new years my cell phones will cost $50-$200 and text will cost 5 cents and calls will cost only $10. I will have all kinds on cell phones like the Black Berry, I Touch, and other kinds. The outside of my store will look something like a cell phone but not really a cell phone.

Linh Tranh School Supplies Store - This store is not just a normal store, it is special, with supplies that are not sold in other school supplies store. The customers will go inside, because it will be like a wonderland in there. It also was opened early to night with low prices that a lot of people would buy. The features will be like supplies stacked in an order way with glass shelves holding it. The walls are very colorful too. The store is really big with a lot of pencils and erasers different from a lot of stores. There will be computers to play with too.

Pauline Vu Candy Store - My store would be in the middle of a very crowded place so a lot of people would come in. The façade would be very colorful. The inside of the store would be very roomy. There would be music and a lot of shining lights. It would be like a real Willy Wonka Factory. Almost everything in the store would be edible, well except the people, the walls, the cash register, and the money. It would be like a candy all you can eat buffet. It would be kind of expensive, but not too expensive. I would name it Sweet Spot. There would a part to make your own candy and

another part to watch how candy is made. A part to show people the history of candy and old candy. The customers would be like if they were in Willy Wonka’s Factory but better.

Alger Vuong School Supplies Store - My store would look like a two story building, but inside it is almost the same except that the inside would be huge and the shelves would be filled, but upstairs there would be a play room, a swimming pool, and games. This store would be for children, it would be located on the street. The store would be called “The Store” and lights would be flashing and everything will be bright to

attract people.

Derrick Vuong Game Store - There would be a giant sign outside that reads “Free Money Inside…We

Also Sell Games.” The door will be an elevator. However when the door closes, the other side opens and slowly goes down unto the people,

unless they go out to the other side. However again, they will fall down to the “Magic Slide” and land on soft rocks. Then the people will see the rows and rows of games covered with electrically charged cases. They cannot leave unless they buy a game or 100 or so because the only exit is guarded by guard dogs and besides the door will be locked.

William Vuong Game Store - The special thing about my store is that it’s in every mall and also on the walls, shelves there’s games posters and game magazines. Once the clientele enter to the building, they can hear all kinds of songs, and watch the games that the clientele was playing. It would feel like the movies with better graphics and songs. There’s also a snack area where our clientele can eat and play games. There would also be aficionado games or a lower echelon of games. My store would be unique because there would be giant poster on the wall and a large television inside the store so it would be easier to play.
