REFLECTIONS NEWSLETTER #4 Autumn/Winter 2008 REFLECTIONS NEWSLETTER Autumn/Winter 2008 #4 Innovation is key to our expansion Caerphilly Flagship HQ heralds new way of working Piccadilly Distinct identity in prestigious surroundings Clydebank New site for college in urban regeration Reynaers customers from the UK joined others from around Europe at the company’s headquarters in Duffel, Belgium to celebrate the significant expansion of the Reynaers Institute, the company’s testing and research facility, as well as a major extension to the head office warehouse. State of the art research facility We consider innovation to be the key to our corporate culture and are proud to confirm that, following its expansion to 2800 m 2 , the Reynaers Institute is now one of the largest private test centres in the industry. Amongst the new testing units which visitors were shown are new cyclic and mechanical testing machines, an acoustic chamber and another air, wind and water testing rig. The expansion also provides the capacity to accommodate more research programs in the future. To remain the leader in our industry we continuously bring innovative solutions to the market, and this year alone, Reynaers will launch or update more than 20 products, ranging from photovoltaic applications to ventilation, fire proof and security solutions. Warehouse expansion to meet demand Our head office warehouse has been extended by more than 40% to 1600 m 2 in order to support recent rapid growth and provide a better service to customers. What’s more, our commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by the fact that the new warehouse boasts the largest photovoltaic roof installation in Belgium today. An area of 10,000 m 2 is used to carry 3072 photovoltaic sun panels, which will generate 500, 000 kWh solar energy per annum; the equivalent of the electricity supply for 166 families, and enough to provide the total energy consumption for the warehouse. In the process, the solar plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 278 tons per year. This offers a complete solution for the integration of photovoltaic panels which allows convenient installation and maintenance of the various components and cabling. Our enthusiasm about aluminium is shared by many architects who believe that its many benefits will ensure it continues to grow in popularity as a building material. According to a recent survey undertaken by Reynaers, 85 percent of architects consider aluminium as the material of choice for non-residential buildings and 72% would select it for residential construction. With this positive approach, our commitment to new product innovation, offices in 27 countries and a presence in more than 50 countries, it is no surprise that Reynaers Aluminium are on course to achieve our aim of increasing annual turnover by 48% to 450 million EUR by 2012. Welcome Inside this issue Mark Jones has been appointed Technical Director of Reynaers Limited. Mark brings an enormous amount of knowledge and experience as well as great energy and enthusiasm for Reynaers and he is looking forward to joining our team and helping us to continue to grow our business in the UK. Appointed as Project Development Manager, Calvin Norton brings over 20 years valuable experience in the curtain wall and window industry, his previous roles having included Designer, Drawing Office Manager and Façade Engineer. Expansions to the technical team also include new Technical Assistants, Lee Morley and Shane Taylor. Lee has extensive relevant draughtsman’s experience including eighteen months with a cladding and roofing company and five years with Reynaers’ fabricator, Saint Gobain. Most of us would agree that while telephones, the internet and email are invaluable, nothing beats good face to face discussion. With this in mind Reynaers recently held three Innovation Days in order to share our latest product developments with customers from all over the UK. Nobody could deny that industry conditions have been tough this year. As expected the media has feasted on the bad news, accentuating the negatives and increasing people’s fears. This growth is thanks mainly to existing Reynaers customers who themselves have adapted well. Although we remain cautious of the market conditions, we also know that our future success lies in developing new products and attacking new markets with dynamic customers. Reynaers and their fabricator, Solaglas Contracting Scotland, have played a crucial role in the construction of the new Clydebank College, part of the dramatic regeneration of the site of the former John Brown Shipyard in Clydebank and key to the redevelopment of the adjoining area.

In a £33m project, representing the largest single site further education campus relocation in Scotland, the new college has been built at Queen’s Quay by the River Clyde. The design is

Until now, County Borough Council were accommodated in three separate buildings. Penalta House is now home to the council offices, the Civic Office for the Mayor, and the main location for meeting of the Council.

Prestigious in design, the architects on the project, Powell Dobson, created a highly functional building which incorporates an impressive curtain walling façade along with a central atrium that generates significant amounts of natural light within the building. Behind the frontage is the largest customer service centre in the county, providing full access to a comprehensive range of council services. The building opens out to a modern office development housing over 240 full-time council employees.

The construction meets the highest environmental standards incorporating a ‘ground heat source facility’ providing an environmentally friendly way of heating and cooling the building, reducing the council’s carbon footprint and leading to significant energy cost savings.

Manufacture and installation of the Reynaers CW50 curtain wall façade and roof system was carried out by Glamalco along with the windows and doors which utilised Reynaers CS68 thermally improved, three-chamber system.

Fronting on to Piccadilly in London’s West End is a new commercial/retail development in a modern, classical design which reflects its distinguished surroundings.

An eight storey development, 198-202 Piccadilly consists of 70,000 square feet of office space set above nearly 30,000 square feet of premier retail space.

The building makes extensive use of Reynaers CS68 Renaissance windows and doors, which have classic 9 mm deep fluting on the exterior and interior faces. Ideal for traditional buildings, the system is aesthetically pleasing, facilitates all types of inward or outward opening windows and ensures superior wind and water tightness.

The building straddles three separate streets and its design carefully reflects the character of each street. Piccadilly frontage has full classical detail, while Jermyn Street is more restrained and Church Place, where the building is adjacent to St James’ Church, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, features an almost plain façade.

An imposing octagonal tower dominates the building frontage. Silhouetted against a sloping copper roof are large dormer windows featuring the CS68 Renaissance system interspersed with 10 foot high urns and a roof top pavilion with barrow columns and glass walls housing a plant room.

Reynaers systems have been installed throughout

the main college building to facilitate expansive

views of the riverside and the surrounding town,

a key element of the building’s design.

Clydebank College moves into shipyard site New way of working for Caerphilly

Classical design for prestigious address

distinguished by large overhanging cantilevered canopies which appear to ‘float’ over visitors at both entrances. The strong visual landmark is a reference to the scale and visual presence of the huge ships which once dominated the townscape as they were being built.

“One of the main reasons for specifying Reynaers was that we knew they could provide the high quality we needed within the budget available,” explained David Bennie, Project Manager for Solaglas Contracting Scotland.

“But equally important, the CW50 systems give us great flexibility. The range of combinations it offers means we knew we could use it throughout the building on curtain walling and windows, enabling us to let in maximum light without any restrictions.”

The fabricators installed Reynaers CW50 curtain walling to the main entrance and stairs, utilising CW50-HL for its striking aesthetic horizontal lines and CW50-SC, structural clamped, throughout the building, including ribbon windows to the classrooms. Due to the college’s location under Glasgow Airport’s flight path, 10mm double glazed units were specified because of their acoustic properties and Trox vents, all accommodated by the CW50 system, which ensure that classrooms are immune from external sound and are well ventilated.

Now fully open, the striking three-storey Clydebank College campus caters for over 10,000 students and incorporates modern engineering and construction workshops, state of the art science labs, advanced sporting facilities, a conference suite and open public spaces.

The thermally enhanced, three-chamber CS68 system boasts

the combination of high insulation levels and optimal safety.
