To advertise in the next issue, call us!

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Wink —

Capturing Life in the ‘Loops. The purpose of the

magazine is simple — at Wink, we aim to show

Kamloops residents all the good news stories out

there in the community.

Wink is a showcase of life happening in Kamloops.

Within this publication, you’ll see the volunteers

who make the community tick, the people who

attend the fundraisers and the benefit evenings.

You’ll see charity and hospitality. Sometimes, you’ll

merely see people out, enjoying the city in which

they live.

In short, you’ll see Kamloops. You’ll see your city,

and soon, if you send us your photos, you might

even see yourself.

Even more than its geography, Kamloops is

defined by its people; those who get out into the

community and get involved. When you attend

a benefit gala, you might think you’re just there

to have fun and party, but in truth, you’re making

your community a healthy, more vibrant place.

Wink is about the people of Kamloops — the city’s

bright side.

To help make this publication a success, we need

your help. If you’re attending an event, bring your

camera, or even your iPhone. Snap some photos,

write down a name or two, and send it to

[email protected].

And make sure to send us details of your upcoming

event so we can attend or add it to the monthly

event calendar.

Basics for Babies: Food BankThis years’ event was a resounding success. Held at a new venue, Hotel 540, on Nov. 25,

Basics for Babies raised $28,000 in cash donations and $7,500 worth of baby items including

diapers, wipes baby formula and baby cereal. This will last the Kamloops Food Bank all year

long, providing much needed items for young families. Because of the success of the event,

funds will also go to supporting the Baby Bank, which is stocked with other needed items

including blankets, soothers, bottles and most importantly, information for new mothers about

services available in the community. B100 and the Kamloops Daily News were media sponsors

of this years’ event, and Daybreak Rotary sponsored the breakfast.Extra, Extra! TRU WolfPack hockey player Andrew Fisher hands out copies of The Daily News in exchange for donations at a drive-thru in front of Hotel 540.

United Way FundraisingThe United Way fundraising campaign runs from September through to

Christmas but November is by far the busiest month. There are more than

100 workplaces in the region that host United Way campaigns for their

employees. The Employee Campaign Coordinators at each site are the

champions of the campaign, as they organize the campaign, canvass co-

workers to collect donations, and they plan fun events to raise awareness.Pie Toss: As part of its annual United Way campaign, TRU held a pie toss. Participants paid to toss pies at senior leaders on campus. Here, Dr. Katherine Sutherland is shown with Santa (AKA Dr. Tom Dickinson).

In Cuffs: The Jail & Bail fundraiser organized by the RCmP raised over $40,000 in one day. Here, Deb mcClelland is hauled off by Inspector Yves Lacasse.

Santa Claus ParadeThe annual Santa Claus Parade rolled through Kamloops’ downtown core on Nov. 26. This

year, the parade featured 76 entrants who entertained hundreds of spectators lining the route.

The day began by Waking Up Santa at 10:30 a.m., and then travelled along Victoria Street,

from Second Avenue to Sixth Avenue. Santa’s float was, of course, the last to make it’s way

along the parade route. This year, the weather held, it was chilly, but there was no snow, and a

good time was had by all.

Ready to Boogie? Jo Berry leads a stretching warm-up for Daily News Boogie promoters in Saturday’s parade.

Keeping Warm: From left, Joshua Lansing, Logan Seer, and Samuel Lansing cuddle up under a blanket.

Fairy Tales: A princess and Snow White wave from the En-chanted Teacup float.

Drummer Boy: Kelsey Henderson plays the drum while marching with the Bi-Service Cadet Band.

Craft Fair‘Tis the season for craft fairs. There’s no better place to recognize the talent of people in the

community than a local Christmas craft fair. Turns out, Kamloops has some pretty talented

artisans and bakers, and there are always some unique gift ideas up for grabs.

Playing Along: Layla mcLeod, Oliva Sjokvist, and Anna Sjokvist do the cakewalk at St. Ann’s Christmas Bazaar.
