    Wind Power Turbine Project

    I. INTRODUCTION

Energy is an important part of any country’s economy. Today major

energy needed in a country is achieved by using conventional

sources of energy. It includes coal, natural gas, nuclear fuel, etc. But

these sources are limited on earth .

Looking towards the environment eect as thermal plant

releases smoke and ash which causes air pollution. !uclear power

plant releases radioactive waste which are ha"ardous and cause air

and land pollution. #ue to these factor we concern our idea toward

non conventional sources of energy. !on $conventional sources of

energy are environmental friendly, easily available on earth .

%ind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of

energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills

for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage,

    or sails to propel ships.

In addition the main advantages of wind energy are that this sort of

energy is free pollution and eco&friendly. 'lso, a wind power turbine

does not re(uire any additional source of energy for powergeneration.'t the begin of this year a group of %in'id )orporation leading by

*r %erkamp visited the school and oered the installation of the

wind power turbine, but for a highly e+pensive price for the school.

Luckily, a few months ago a group of %indaid volunteers came to

visited us and oered us the wind power turbine for a more

    attainable price.

owever, the major bene-ts for our school would be that leming

will became in a leading e+ample for an energy conscious and

environmentally friendly school. In our school it should be a perfect

project for the year of sustainability. leming )ollege is gaining a

wind turbine at a very subsidised rate due to the volunteer

involvement. /ni(ue education and insight into renewable energies

for the students .oundation for knowledge on renewable energy for

students to carry with them into their future careers and lives.

    II. SUMMARY O ACTI!ITI"S

By means of  a group of international volunteers hosted by WindAid, willcome to Fleming College for the construction and installation of small-

scale wind turbines also to bring the students valuable information on the

subjects of renewable energy and the environment. his will be carried

out through a series of classes with the students !hosted by the WindAid

volunteers" and a number of practical wor#shops, culminating in the

presentation and e$hibition of a %#W wind turbine that will be later

installed on the building roof to power the two science classrooms.

    Background& WindAid is a non-profit organisation that wor#s with

international volunteers in the construction and installation of small-scalewind turbines for communities in 'eru.

    Timeline&

(onday )*th +ctober WindAid volunteers arrive in 'eru

    (onday %th +ctober !for wee#s" /ectures and wor#shops begin during

normal timetabled classes in the science department

Wee#end )0-)th 1ovember We will come to the school to install the

    turbine for the e$hibition.

(onday )th 1ovember 2$hibition wee#, with presentation of the wind

    turbine in the school grounds.

hursday )*th 1ovember We will plan to install the wind turbine on the

    roof in its permanent location.

Wind Turbine& he volunteers will spend 0 wee#s building the wind

turbine in the WindAid wor#shop in (oche. he completed wind turbinewill be e$hibited outside the reception at the front of the school for short

period before being installed permanently on the roof.

he wind turbine on e$hibition will be on a 3m high tower. he wind

turbine will then be moved to its permanent installation on the building

roof toward the end of the wee# !hursday )*th" or during the following

wee#. he wind turbine when installed on the roof will be on a 0m high

    tower.

+nce on the roof, the wind turbine will be used to power the two science

classrooms as a demonstration of clean energy and a carbon neutral

    classroom.

Wind turbine safety& Although the spinning blades of the wind turbine

may appear dangerous, the turbine poses no danger and there is

absolutely no ris# of blades falling off or the wind turbine falling down.

4owever, we recommend that during the e$hibition wee#, a temporary

fence is put around the wind turbine to prevent students playing and

climbing on the structure. his fence would be the responsibility of

    Fleming College to install.

    Questions&

5s it possible for 6cience department to arrange a field trip to visit theWindAid wor#shop in (oche to see where the wind turbines are built7

Costs& Fleming College could pay the amount of 8)%99 ! cost of the

wind turbine", with an initial payment of 899 now and the remaining

    payment of 8:99 in February.

Fleming College will also be buying 3 small wind turbine #its at a cost of

    8)9.
