INTRODUCTIONThere are basically three different
options:BROADBAND ACCESSWIFI ACCESSDIAL-UP ACCESS
The main problems with broadband access are that it is pretty expensive & it doesn’t reach all areas.
The main problem with WIFI is that hot spots are very small, so coverage is sparse.
New Technology WiMAX This new Technology would provide:-That is less expensive than cableMuch easier to extend to rural areasBroad coverage like cell phone networks. WiMAX is a wireless digital
communications system also known as IEEE 802.16.
Working There are two parts:WiMAX TowerWiMAX Receiver
WiMAX stations connect directly to the internet
with a wired connection.
TYPES OF WIMAXFIXED WIMAX:
Fixed WIMAX deployments do not cater for hand off between base stations, therefore the service provider cannot offer mobility.
MOBILE WIMAX:Mobile WIMAX
implementations can be used to deliver both fixed & mobile services.

ADVANTAGESBandwidth FlexibilityPricing + Contract FlexibilityQuick InstallationInterpenetration
DISADVANTAGESWiMAX can operate at higher bitrates or over
longer distances but not both.Omni directional antennas are used.
BROADBAND ACCESSMany companies are closely examining
WIMAX for “last-mile" connectivity at high data rates.
The resulting competitions may bring lower pricing for both home & business customers, or bring broadband access to places where it has been economically unavailable.

COMPARISON B/W WIMAX & WIFI
WIMAXWiMAX is a long
range system. WiMAX provides
services analogous to cell phone.
It uses a mechanism based on setting up connections between the base station & user device.
WiFiWiFi is shorter
range system. WiFi is more
analogous to a cordless phone.
WiFi has introduced a quality of service mechanism similar to fixed Ethernet, where packet can receive different priorities based on their tags.
Mobile WIMAX Broadband
Conclusion Within five years, we expect WiMAX to be
the dominant technology for wireless networking. By that time it will be fully mobile, as well as providing low-cost, fixed broadband access that will open up regions where internet access has no far not been practical.
