The history of athletics at Hofstra is as old as the Universityitself, and is steeped in the Dutch heritage that helps tomake Hofstra such a unique school.

Hofstra has always had strong roots in tradition. Ties toDutch heritage and the Netherlands began with William S.Hofstra, after whom the school is named and on whoseproperty the University was started. When the doorsopened in 1935, the sole building on campus wasHofstra’s mansion, which he had affectionately named theNetherlands after his homeland. The mansion, which houses administrative offices, is now the center of Hofstra’s240-acre campus, and has been renamed Hofstra Hall.

Also adopted in this early stage of Hofstra’s history wasthe school alma mater, “The Netherlands.” The lyrics werewritten by a faculty member to the music of the Dutchnational anthem by the 16th-century Dutch composerValerius.

The Hofstra FlagThe Hofstra storm flag is modeled after an actual Dutchgeus, a privateer’s flag. In 1991 a representative ofHolland’s Queen Beatrix presented the banner to thenHofstra President (now President Emeritus) James M.Shuart.The history of the flag dates back to 1572, when a groupof Dutch loyalists called Watergeuzen used the flag’s mastto ram the gates of a Dutch city in their opposition toSpanish rule. While the Netherlands Royal Navy flies theoriginal red, white and blue geus, the Hofstra version hasbeen redesigned in the school colors of gold, white andblue.

The gold, white and blue Hofstra colors themselves springfrom Dutch roots. The first official Hofstra flag appearedon April 19, 1940, when Dr. Alexander Loudon, an envoyfor Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, presented hiscountry’s flag to Hofstra in a special ceremony. However, the flag he presented was not the red, white and blue flagof the Netherlands, but the orange, white and blue bannerof William of Nassau with a Hofstra emblem placed onthe flag. The University has used the design ever since, although President Shuart, after researching the colors, replaced the orange hue with gold, making the flag truerto the original House of Nassau. The flag is one ofHofstra’s most recognizable symbols, utilized inpublications, pins and souvenirs.

The Hofstra SealThe Hofstra seal, another easily recognizable emblem, was designed from the royalDutch emblem by art instructorConstant Van de Wall. Theseal is modeled on the coat ofarms of the House of Orange-Nassau. The round seal includes thecoat of arms, flanked by lions on either side. A lion also

stands in the center of the coat of arms, holding a swordin its right claw and a bundle of seven arrows, whichrepresent the seven provinces of Holland, in its left. Theseal also carries the motto of the House of Orange-Nassauin Old French: “Je maintiendray” (I stand steadfast). In1988 one of the two lions on the seal was officiallyreplaced with a lioness. The seal is now the focal point ofthe “Hofstra Pride” logo.

The Hofstra NicknamesThe Hofstra nickname has also evolved over the years. Fordecades, Hofstra athletic teams have used the nicknamesFlying Dutchmen, Dutchmen, or Dutch. Recently, an additional nickname of The Pride has become popular. We have not changed our nickname. We are both theDutch (and its variations) and the Pride.

The Pride nickname started during the University’s dramaticrecovery and growth in the mid to late ‘80’s from a majorfiscal crisis during the previous decade. The first consistentuse of the word “Pride” relating to athletics started in1989 when the University’s athletic booster club wasfounded and called itself The Pride Club. At that time ithad no meaning associated with our teams. It was simplyconsistent with a general feeling about all of our efforts.

The Pride nickname has also evolved over the past decadein a more specific fashion than just the expression of thefeeling. The word pride is used to describe a sense ofhaving strong self-respect or a sense of accomplishment. But in 1988 the lion on the right side of the shield on theHofstra seal was changed into a lioness to symbolize gender equity. This, in turn, led to the development of theUniversity mascots — Kate and Willie Pride, a lion andlioness. The two lions led to extensive use of the word“Pride” in talking about Hofstra, as a group of lions iscalled a pride. In 1995 bronze reproductions of the lionand lioness were added to the campus scenery. In fact, there are now four such pairs of sculptures on campus.

However, the evolution continues even further. In 1997,the University purchased a sculpture by Paul Manship of“Atalanta,” a figure from Greek mythology. It is an impressive 14-foot tall figure of a running woman. It is onthe west side of Hofstra Stadium. To complement this figure, in 1998, the University commissioned Gregg Wyattto sculpt a similarly sized figure of a running man. In thiscase it was a representation of “Hippomenes” who was acentral figure in the myth. The myth of Atalanta andHippomenes relates closely to Hofstra symbology.

As the myth goes, an Oracle told Atalanta, as a young girl, that she must never marry. Thus, Atalantaavoided men and devoted herself to the chase. Soon shecould outrun any man. Yet because Atalanta was so attractive she had many suitors. To deal with them sheimposed an almost impossible condition. She would onlymarry one who could beat her in a foot race. While shewould be the prize of such a race, the penalty for losingwas death. Nonetheless there were suitors and there wasneed of a judge for such races. Hippomenes was chosenfor this role. However, when he saw Atalanta he immediately fell in love with her. Knowing he could neverout run her, he sought the help of Venus.

Venus agreed, and gave him three golden apples, whichHippomenes was to throw in front of Atalanta during therace. The apples were so desirable it would be impossiblefor her to resist picking them up, and thus she would losethe race. All this came to pass, and when the race wasover and won by Hippomenes, they fell deeply in love andthe youth carried off his prize. However, they angeredVenus for their failure to thank her. As punishment, sheturned Hippomenes into a lion and Atalanta into a lioness.

With this strong identification with lions and the multiplemeanings of the word pride, our coaches and players, as wellas the sports media, have begun to use it extensively over thelast several years. Our women’s teams especially are morecomfortable calling themselves The Pride, which is genderless, than they are calling themselves The Flying Dutchwomen orthe Lady Dutch. The men’s teams are also comfortable withthe nickname Pride.

However, as noted earlier, we have not abandoned theFlying Dutchmen or formally adopted The Pride. There isnothing wrong with having more than one nickname. It isnot uncommon for a school to have two nicknames as institutions such as Yale, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Armyhave multiple monikers. The bottom line is our name isHOFSTRA.

LLong Island offers the best of bothworlds: it is a suburban haven that is

also convenient to New York City.Location, however, is just one of manyassets that makes Long Island attractive toboth native residents and visitors alike. The people, the sites and the uniquegeography of Long Island bring peopleback again and again.

Long Island is the largest island adjoiningthe continental United States. Twentymiles wide and approximately 118 mileslong, Long Island is separated from themainland on the north by the Long IslandSound and on the south by the AtlanticOcean. It measures 100 miles from theNassau-Queens border to Montauk Point, which lies on the eastern tip of the SouthFork. The eastern tip of the North Fork iscalled Orient Point. The forks are separated by thebeautiful waters of theGreat Peconic Bayand Gardiner’s Bay.Nestled in the baysbetween the two forksare Shelter Island andGardiner’s Island.

With a population of 2.6 million people,Long Island has a population larger than 20 states. It has 19 colleges anduniversities with 150,000 students, and127 public school districts with morethan 415,000 students. The region isconsidered one of the nation’s wealthiestareas with a per household medianincome of $52,000. The work force onLong Island now exceeds 1.4 million persons, and the region boasts one of thelowest unemployment rates in the nation.

The economy is made up of more than85,000 businesses, has 50 millionsquare feet of office space, and hasmore than 1,000 shopping malls.Roosevelt Field is the premier mall onLong Island, featuring department storesand specialty shops, and is only minutesfrom the Hofstra University campus.

The most distinguishing features of LongIsland, however, are its scenic beautyand its many sites and attractions. It hasbecome a vacation spot for many, a “getaway” from big city hassles and distractions. People travel to enjoy the1,100 square miles of shoreline on morethan 150 different beaches. No area ofthe Island is more than 15 minutes from aworld-class beach. Jones Beach, whichlies on the south shore, is a 2,400-acre

park with six miles ofocean beach, board-walk, bay beach, pool, golf and outdoor con-certs. It is 10 minutesfrom Hofstra and, in thesummer, students cancatch a Hofstra shuttle

bus to the beach.

In addition, Long Island is home to 20state parks, 100 golf courses, 100 tennisclubs and 400 yacht clubs. The activeperson can enjoy camping, canoeing, bicycling, water skiing, boating or fishing. Others might enjoy visiting any ofthe lighthouses, the millionaire mansions, the art galleries or one of Long Island’s14 wineries. The tourist may join thecrowd at theaters and gourmet seafoodrestaurants, or hit one of themany exciting nightclubs.Families might cool off atthe beach or the waterpark. The Hamptons, at theheart of the South Fork, areconsidered a summer resortarea and are famous as theplayground community ofthe rich and famous.

Long Island is the place for the sportsfan, as well. The Nassau VeteransMemorial Coliseum, which is literallyacross the street from Hofstra, offers concerts, children’s shows and is home tothe National Hockey League’s New YorkIslanders. Belmont Park, home of horseracing’s Belmont Stakes, offers the thor-oughbred horse enthusiast an outlet inbeautiful surroundings. Heading intoQueens, there’sSheaStadium, home ofthe NewYorkMets.Furtherwest, and a short ride via the Long IslandRail Road, is New York City, where students can frequent museums, theaters, retailers, Madison Square Garden, SouthStreet Seaport and more.

More than 24 million people visit LongIsland each year pumping approximately$7 billion into its economy throughtourism. Long Island is not merely a placefor the tourist, however. Generationshave settled down and made their livingon Long Island, enjoying the benefits ofmoderate climate, miles of beautifulbeaches, easy access to New York City, and a place to call home. With scores ofmajor attractions and distinctive sites,Long Island has it all for the tourist, aswell as the year-round resident.

The 2003 baseball season marks the sec-ond season in the tenure of Hofstra HeadCoach Chris Dotolo, and with 16 newcom-ers on the roster, it seems that this will bethe season that Dotolo begins building theteam with players that fit his style of play.Dotolo promises that this year’s version ofthe Flying Dutchmen will be better athleti-cally, have better than average speed, andplay better defense than last season’s 12-40 squad. “However,” Dotolo cautions.“Younger and untested players will get achance to play.” That may or may notaffect the won-loss record, but one thing iscertain – the younger players will need toget experience in order for the rebuildingprocess to be a success.

Here is a look at the 2003 FlyingDutchmen:

INFIELDDotolo has the luxury of three catchers tochoose from and plans on using all threethroughout the season. Red-shirt freshmanMichael Walsh (Norfolk, MA) is nearlyrecovered from a shoulder injury that kepthim from playing last season, and alreadyknows the Hofstra system. Freshman BryanBugg (Norman, OK) is also part of the tri-umvirate that will see time behind the plate.Bugg was a first team All-Oklahoma selec-tion as a senior and gives the Dutchmen aleft-handed hitting catcher. “Bryan has astrong arm and he handles the pitching staffwell,” said Dotolo. Fellow freshman StevenOliveri (Huntington Station, NY) rounds outthe catching corps. Oliveri, who Dotolocalled “fundamentally sound and gooddefensively”, was an all-league selection atSt. Anthony’s High School.

Junior Ryan Cosentino (East Brunswick, NJ)returns after a stellar sophomore campaignand will play first base when he is notpitching. Cosentino led the team with a.341 average in 2002 and added 13doubles and 17 RBIs. Cosentino, whosebat is needed in the lineup, will also logsome time at designated hitter. FreshmanJ.P. Wechter (Ephrata, PA), an all-sectionperformer at Ephrata High School, willalso see action at first base and possiblythird base. According to Dotolo, the leftyswinging Wechter has a great deal ofpower potential. Junior transfer Mike

Perullo (Levittown, NY) will also add agreat deal of pop to the lineup and willsee action at first base and designated hit-ter. The 6-2, 220-pound Perullo is a trans-fer from Belmont Abbey College.

The rest of the infield is not as clear-cut asfirst base. Several versatile players will pushfor playing time at the other three infieldspots led by seniors Will Palmer (Fairport,NY) and Thomas Brown (Clayton, NJ).Palmer returns to the infield after playing inall 52 games last season, batting .209 witha team-leading 11 stolen bases. Brown, whowill serve as team captain this season, played in 50 games last season and batted.290 with 13 doubles and nine stolen bases.Brown played out of position at catcher lastseason due to injuries and should flourish athis more natural positions.

Senior Brian Ariss (Hicksville, NY) andsophomore Sam Eferstein (Tamarac, FL)will also look for time in the infield, although Ariss will likely see more time inthe outfield. Ariss played in 46 games in2002 and batted .234 with nine stolenbases. Eferstein, who is primarily a secondbaseman, saw action in 21 games and hit.224 with three RBIs.

Three freshmen will push the veterans forplaying time. Josh Stern (Millwood, NY), afour-time all-league and all-section pick atHorace Greeley High School will push fortime at shortstop, while David Huth (Akron,OH) will challenge at third base. Huth had33 hits in 18 games as a senior. RickyCaputo (Miller Place, NY), an All-SuffolkCounty and all-league selection at MillerPlace High School will compete for time inthe infield and will also see action on themound.

OUTFIELDHofstra’s outfield goes eight deep led bysenior returnee Ed Cook (Bowie, MD).Cook, who could play all three outfieldpositions, played in 29 games last seasonand batted .220 six doubles and nineRBIs. Cook will be joined in the outfield byfellow seniors Thomas Brown and BrianAriss, as well as sophomore Mackie Root(King of Prussia, PA). Root played in 44games as a red-shirt freshman, batting.245 with three home runs and 28 RBIs.Root, who ranked second on the team inhome runs and RBIs, could also see time atdesignated hitter.

Four newcomers will also be looking forplaying time in the outfield. SophomoreJosh Stewart (Bloomsburg, PA) joins theDutchmen after spending one season at St.John’s University. Stewart is a speedy left-handed hitter, who batted .284 with ninestolen bases for the Red Storm. Anotherspeedy lefty is sophomore Brett Stambolian

(Marlton, NJ). Stambolian joins the FlyingDutchmen after spending the 2002 seasonat Gloucester County Community Collegeand the 2001 season at the University ofTennessee. In addition to his speed,Stambolian also exhibits a bit of power atthe plate. Junior Eugene Brooks (FarRockaway, NY), a transfer from BriarcliffeCollege, give the Dutchmen another speed-burner with raw power in the outfield.Brooks batted .327 with 11 doubles and19 stolen bases at Briarcliffe in 2002.Freshman Eric Balson (Staten Island, NY)rounds out the outfield for the Dutchmen.Balson is another player who can run well, and he is learning to switch hit. Balson ledthe CHSAA in runs scored and RBIs as asenior at St. Joseph’s by the Sea HighSchool, while batting .381.

PITCHINGDotolo will field a pitching staff of 13 play-ers featuring Ryan Cosentino, senior AdamDocar (Lynbrook, NY) and junior SamDeLuca (Frankfort, KY). Cosentino posted a1-4 record with one save on the hill with ateam-best 3.77 ERA and 53 strikeouts.Docar, who was 2-10 with a 7.54 ERAand 44 strikeouts last season, will becounted on more this season as a numbertwo starter. Docar ranked second on theteam in innings pitched last year (59.2)and led the squad with two completegames. DeLuca, who is 100-percenthealthy, was 2-2 with a 6.63 ERA in 14appearances as a sophomore.

Dotolo expects a big year from seniorMarc Acierno (Plainview, NY), who posteda 1-2 record last season. Another senior,Jeff Alwine (Exton, PA), is making asmooth transition from position player tothe mound and will contribute this season.Alwine batted .252 with five doubles and15 RBIs last season.

Juniors Steve Conley (Flushing, NY) andDanny Zuccarello (East Meadow, NY) arealso in the mix for innings. Conleyappeared in five games without a decisionlast season, while Zuccarello was 1-3 ineight appearances, but improved as theseason wore on.

The six newcomers on the staff will all geta chance to showcase their abilities, withseveral players cracking the starting rota-tion for conference games. One of thoseplayers is Nassau Community Collegetransfer Brendan Smar (Massapequa, NY).Smar was a second team Junior CollegeAll-American after posting a 5-0 recordand a 0.88 ERA last season. FreshmanScott Bisco (Hazelton, PA) should also seeweekend action after going 10-1 in his lasttwo seasons at Hazelton Area HighSchool. Freshman Kellen Taylor (Delta, PA)will also be thrust into the weekend rota-tion after earning all-county and team MostValuable Player honors at Kennard-DaleHigh School.

Ricky Caputo, who is also slated to seeaction in the infield, will log mid-weekinnings for the Dutchmen, while 6-5 leftyKevin Conzelman (Jamison, PA) will alsoget a chance in non-conference action.Conzelman was 5-0 with a 1.03 ERA as a

senior at Central Bucks East High School.Another freshman, Vinnie DiSanti(Westport, MA), will also be part of themid-week pitching rotation. DiSanti wasthe Standard Times Athlete of the Year asa senior at Bishop Stang High School.

SCHEDULEAlthough Dotolo has a young team with alot of new faces, you wouldn’t know it bythe Flying Dutchmen’s 2003 schedule.“We are jumping in feet first,” said Dotolo.“We start of with a good non-conferenceschedule with a chance to be competitiveagainst VMI and Radford. We also have agreat opportunity to play at the Universityof Florida, which I am looking forward to,and then we will face stiff competition atthe UNCW-Hughes Brothers Tournament.”In addition, Hofstra will have to contendwith a non-conference slate of local rivals, including St. John’s, Fordham and StonyBrook. “Every non-conference game isimportant,” said Dotolo. “Not only for ourrecord, but for momentum, psyche and forpossible postseason play.”

TThe Flying Dutchmen playand practice on

University Field, located onHofstra’s North Campus.University Field is centrallylocated between two ofthe most frequented siteson campus, the HofstraRecreation Center and theHofstra University Arena. It isalso just 25 yards from theColonial Square residential complex.

UniversityField has undergone

major renovations over the several months. The infieldwas skinned and a new drainage system was put in.This was followed by the installation of “CompetitionTurf” by Edel Grass. The artificial grass surface, whichis similar to what is used at Veterans Stadium inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, was installed by Landtek ofAmityville, New York. The new surface will give theDutchmen greater flexibility in playing during inclementweather and will also allow for greater use during thesummer months. Other renovations included leveling theberm that was located behind the backstop, moving thebackstop back 10 feet and installing new bleachers

behind home plate. New fences were also installed along the right field and left field lines.

The recent renovations weren’t the first done to University Field. In 1990 extensive outfield repair was done, including theinstallation of a wooden fence. In 1991 dugouts were built, new fencing was installed in foul territory and the bullpenareas were also enclosed with fencing.

University Field has dimensions of 331 feet down the left field line, 380 to center field and 340 down the right field line. There is ample parking adjacent to the field.

HOFSTRA PHYSICAL FITNESS CENTER/NEW YORK JETS PRACTICE BUBBLEHofstra can avoid inclement weather by using the indoor Physical Fitness Center, which is equipped with pitchingmachines and batting cages. The Dutchmen also have use of the New York Jets indoor practice bubble. The 50-yard turffield gives Hofstra a unique practice environment that protects the team from inclement weather. The practice bubble islocated on the North Campus, near Hofstra Arena.

Boasting a roster of 10 well-respect-ed academic institutions, the ColonialAthletic Association continues tobuild on a proud history as oneof the nation’s top collegiate conferences.

With the addition of four newmembers last year, the CAA’s geographic footprint stretches fromthe shadow of the Statue of Liberty to thebeaches of North Carolina. The landscape of the CAA is dotted withmajor metropolitan areas that includefour of the nation’s top 25 media markets– New York (1), Philadelphia (4),Washington, D.C. (8) and Baltimore (24).

The CAA showcases the athletic andacademic skills of some of the nation’stop student-athletes. On the playing field, the conference has produced 15 nationalteam champions in four different sports,28 individual national champions, 11national coaches of the year and ninenational players of the year. In recentyears, the CAA has ranked as the topDivision I non-football conference in theSears Directors Cup standings.

Even more impressive, however, arethe honors accumulated away from competition, which include five RhodesScholars, 11 NCAA post-graduate scholars and 11 Honda Award winners.Annually, there are more than 600 CAAstudent-athletes who post at least a 3.2grade point average and letter in a varsity sport to garner CAA Scholar-Athlete accolades.

Under the direction of CommissionerThomas E. Yeager, who has guided theCAA since its inception, the leaguebasked in the national spotlight onDecember 13, 2000. The University ofDelaware, Drexel University, HofstraUniversity and Towson University wereintroduced as the conference’s newestmembers during a live televised pressconference from the MCI Center inWashington, D.C. The four new institutions joined George MasonUniversity, James Madison University, University of North Carolina at

Wilmington, Old Dominion University,Virginia Commonwealth University andthe College of William & Mary, expanding the CAA to 10 members forthe first time in its history.

The CAA conducts championships in21 men’s and women’s sports. Male athletes compete for championships inbaseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling.Female athletes battle for conference titlesin basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming &diving, tennis, track & field, volleyballand golf.

The CAA traces its roots back to1983 when three of its current members-George Mason, James Madison, andWilliam and Mary - were aligned withEast Carolina University, the UnitedStates Naval Academy and the Universityof Richmond as a basketball league(ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquiredtwo new members (UNC Wilmington andAmerican) and decided to form a newassociation.

The transformation from ECAC Southto CAA took place on June 6, 1985. A“Proclamation of Creation” was signedby representatives of the eight charterinstitutions and by members of the mediaassembled for the announcement. By thefall of 1986, the league gained automaticbids to NCAA Championships in men’sbasketball, soccer, baseball and women’sbasketball and formed an officials’bureau. Old Dominion became a

member of the CAA in 1991-92 andVirginia Commonwealth University

joined the conference in 1995-96.In men’s basketball, the CAA

has earned a reputation as a“giant killer” in the NCAATournament. Since 1981, CAA

schools have posted 12 wins overhigher-seeded teams, including UNC

Wilmington’s upset of Southern Californialast March. Nine of the conference’s 10teams have made at least two NCAATournament appearances since 1990.

The tradition is equally as strong inwomen’s basketball, where OldDominion and James Madison representtwo of the top 10 winningest teams in thehistory of Division I. The Lady Monarchshave captured three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) andreached the title game in 1997. Last season, ODU advanced to the Elite Eightbefore falling to eventual national champion Connecticut. JMU made fourSweet 16 appearances between 1986and 1991.

The conference has also excelled inmany other sports. CAA squads havewon 10 field hockey national titles sincethe championship began in 1981, whichis not only more than any other conference but represents nearly half ofall titles won. In baseball, the CAA hasranked as one of the nation’s top fiveconferences in four of the past five seasons, with six teams rated among thetop 100 in Division I last season. TheCAA is annually ranked among thenation’s top 10 conferences in men’s andwomen’s soccer, and has traditionallysent multiple teams to the NCAATournament. The conference finished the2001-02 campaign with teams rankedamong the top 20 nationally in crosscountry, field hockey, soccer, women’sbasketball, wrestling, tennis and lacrosse.

From all-star athletes to Nobel Prizewinning faculty, the CAA takes greatpride in producing performers who notonly stand out on the playing field, butalso in the classroom.
