    The 4,500-square-foot center atCrissey Field State Park is part of a40-acre park with 15 acres of oceanshore. The facility is a showcase ofsustainable features designed toreduce impacts to the environment,including solar panels, waterlessurinals and pipes made of recycledplastic. The center includes areception area, indoor and 24-houroutdoor public restrooms and officespace. It opened in December 2009.

    The building offers plenty ofparking and views of the PacificOcean. Several trails lead visitors tothe beach or the nearby WinchuckRiver.

    The center is also the new home forthe U.S. Forest Service office, TravelOregon, the Oregon state travel

    agency, and the Oregon Parks andRecreation Department.

    Forest Service office hours arefrom 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday throughFriday.

    Travel Oregon offers printed guidesand maps to visitors to exploreOregon, as well as hosts to assistvisitors and answer questions.

    The welcome center was builtusing many local materials, includingcounters made from myrtlewood cutfrom Loeb State Park trees. Trees usedfor the counters were slated forremoval due to safety issues.

    The park was developed on anabandoned site of a short-lived airstripbuilt in 1950. The property is namedfor W. L. (Bill) Crissey, a pre-WorldWar II lily-bulb grower. The stateacquired Crissey Field in a 1993 landexchange with a private timber firm.

    The annual Fourth of July Festival isa traditional small-town celebration thatdraws a big crowd.

    Thousands of people show up inCrescent City each year for thefestivities, including a downtownparade (starts at 10 a.m.) that last yearattracted 95 entries.

    Activities continue along thewaterfront all day during theBeachfront Fair, featuring vendorbooths, live music, Pastels in the Park,Cow Chip Bingo, Rubber Ducky racesand lots more for all ages.

    A massive fireworks show beginsshortly after 9 p.m. over the BatteryPoint Lighthouse, with the bestviewing locations being fromBeachfront Park, Howe Drive, Whaler

    KITE FESTIVAL INBROOKINGS HARBOROne of the most anticipated summer

    festivals in Brookings is the annualSouthern Oregon Kite Festival at thePort of Brookings Harbor.

    This years event is scheduled for10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 16-17.

    The spectacular kite festival willfeature two full days of world-renowned kite flyers who performindividual and team routines set tomusic. Thousands of visitors andlocals will find plenty of food andmerchandise offered by more than adozen vendors.

    More than 100 fine artists and crafts-men will be selling their work at the 17thannual Brookings Harbor Festival of theArts on Aug. 6-7 at the Port of BrookingsHarbor, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

    Artists from around the Western Unit-ed States will be offering paintings in allmedia, photography, pottery, ceramics,jewelry, beadwork, metal sculpture, stainedglass, woodwork, fabric art and furniture.

    The festival takes place on the board-walk at the port, which has dozens ofunique retail shops, services, restaurantsand lodging facilities. Artist demonstra-tions will be held periodically and a freeChildrens Art Activity Corner will be pro-vided by the Chetco Community Public Li-

    brary.Free entertainment will be provided

    and food will be available through vendorsand port restaurants.

    The reputation of the show has spreadfar and wide and applications are request-ed by hundreds of artisans. It is a juriedshow, filled with unique and original artsand crafts, and the committee reviewsphotographs of the work and booths ofall participants to ensure a balanced showwith highest quality items. No manufac-tured, assembled, or consumable itemsare accepted.
