Wiki Edit Mini Challenge

VAST 2008 Participant Workshop

Wiki Edit Mini Challenge

AwardsWe did not make any wiki edit awards as the committee decided to give only ONE award to each organization this year. Therefore, awards being considered for the wiki edit mini challenge were subsumed by awards in the Grand Challenge area.

Difficulty levelMore manual efforts here than in other challengesEspecially for the question about violenceClearly we need to partner with text processing researchers

OverallLots of different approachesGood visualizations for finding patterns

The Problem

Question One: What are the factions represented in these edit pages? In other words, describe the individuals or groups that edit the pages with regard to any agendas and goals you hypothesize.

The Data

(TW))# (cur) (last) 15:42, 14 December 2006 Salvatora (Talk | contribs) m (115,832 bytes) (Reverted to revision xxxxxxxxx by Honoria; vandalism.)# (cur) (last) 12:59, 31 August 2006 75.179.21.x (Talk) (38 bytes) (?Replaced page with 'is stupid you idiots')

SolutionSolution to this mini challenge was more ambiguous than other mini challenges

Question one:

Basically four factions

Pro, Con, neutrals, bots

But want to eliminate minor players

In the diagram to right which maps undos, reverts, and mentions of vandalism, we see VictoriaV and Sara as representing the Pro- faction. These two do not typically edit each other, but do many edits to others. We also see Edemir, Rm99 and Agustin as representing the Con- faction. They also do not typically edit each other. Edemir, Agustin, and Rm99 substantially edit VictoriaV and vice versa. An argument may be made for Sara being a Neutral. There are several others who may be considered Neutrals as well. BakBot is clearly a vandalism-repairing software robot.

Used a database table and applied various filters to find frequent editors and alsocolor coded entries based on identification of who edits who.

File changes over 20,000 bytes stand out showing a deletion and restoration of the entire record. This pattern suggested instances of vandalism where corrections are made by bots

A close view of File Changes under 20,000 bytes reveals patterns indicating editing wars; subsequent offsetting changes in file size by alternating editors.

Question 2

Is the Paraiso movement involved in violent activities?yes or probably but little evidence

Needed to locate postings that indicated support Mostly manual!

Summary

Creative visualization work!!!!!!

But lots of manual work going on.

In many cases the answer was located using other than visual means, then visualizations were created to show this.

That is a good way to start!

Progress now depends on finding ways to discover the answers using the visualizations!

AND we need to identify which views are more effective for specific tasks.
