The (US) Academy

The Academy of Management is the leading professional body for management academics: Circa 20, 000 members from 115 nations Around 10,000 members attend the annual conference

(referred to as the Academy Meeting) in different North American cities

Philadelphia 2014; Vancouver 2015; Anaheim, 2016; Atlanta, 2017

AoM is organized into specialist Divisions and Interest Groups (IGs), some big, some small: At May 2015, CMS had 728 members; the largest (OB)

had 6,210 Each Division/IG sets its own program, sometimes in

collaboration with other groups CMS is the most international group in the Academy

A little bit of history….

CMS was founded as a small ‘Interest Group’ in 1998

In 2008 it was granted Division status In 2013 the Divisional status of CMS was

renewed

In 2015 the Academy President is Paul Adler, former Chair of the CMS IG

The Critical Management Studies (CMS) Division serves as a…

“forum within the Academy for the expression of views critical of established management practices and the established social order. Our premise is that structural features of contemporary society, such as the profit imperative, patriarchy, racial inequality, and ecological irresponsibility often turn organizations into instruments of domination and exploitation. Driven by a shared desire to change this situation, we aim in our research, teaching, and practice to develop critical interpretations of management and society and to generate radical alternatives. Our critique seeks to connect the practical shortcomings in management and individual managers to the demands of a socially divisive and ecologically destructive system within which managers work.”

Sample topics include: · analysis of the nature of managerial authority, resistance to managerial

authority, identity, affect, rationality, and subjectivity;· critiques of managerialist theories of management and organization; · critical assessments of emerging alternative forms of organization; · critiques of political economy; · critical perspectives on business strategy, CSR, HRM, globalization, MNCs

& international management; entrepreneurship, technological innovation, and computerization;

· critical analyses of management education and development; · critical perspectives on class, gender, and race; identity & diversity;· critical epistemologies and methodologies.

We try to bring together people from a broad range of Academy divisions with the goals of promoting: (a) critical scholarship as an essential component of the life of the Academy; (b) teaching that encourages broader, deeper, and more critical understandings, and; (c) links to progressive social practice.

Where to find critical research

Division members publish in all sorts of places – the most ‘mainstream’ and prestigious journals, self-described ‘critical journals’, and ‘outside’ our field in sociology, psychology, economics

The Division is a great place to test ideas and analysis if you’d like to publish work in: Journal of Management Inquiry, Organization, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Gender Work & Organization, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Human Relations, Scandinavian Journal of Management, Critical Perspectives on International Business

The Division also encourages publishing in other ways: books, edited books, handbooks, open-access journals, blogs and journalistic pieces

The Conference (Meeting)

A five-day meeting program from a Friday through to a Tuesday in early August, with three key components:Professional Development Workshop (PDW)

teaching-related (Dark Side Case Competition), career-related, doctoral student-related (Doctoral & New Faculty Colloquium and Doctoral Dissertation Competition)

First, join the Academy and choose two Divisions to belong to (including CMS!) In the PDW program, you can participate:

In sessions that are oriented towards research, teaching, or doctoral research

In the Dark Side Case Competition, as a writer or reviewer; or in the Doctoral & New Faculty Colloquium

As a participant in other PDW events: organizing, presenting, attending/participating

In the main program: Presenting your research, organizing or participating in symposia As a reviewer: A really good opportunity to understand the reviewing

process, and to make a contribution to Division lifeCome to our social events; be active on the listserv (c-m-workshop@jiscmail.ac.uk)

Where else can I get involved?

In the wider Academy: A lot of the program is made up of Academy-wide or collaborative events

But of course we think the CMS program and community are the most stimulating academically, and the most friendly and approachable

Costs (at 2015)

Membership of the academy is relatively cheap at US$91 (student) and $182 (faculty)

Meeting registration is also relatively well priced at $108 (doctoral early bird) and $270 (faculty early bird for members; for new academic members, it is $452)

Getting and staying there is, usually, not cheap, even if you are based in the US. Try: To find a reasonably priced hotel (probably not a

‘conference hotel’ advertised via the Academy’s Housing Bureau); eat a big breakfast in a good diner; invest in a good guide book

Share: a twin room with a friend, a 3-4 bed apartment with colleagues

But don’t buy cheap health and travel insurance
