H -F offers courses at four levels: Advanced Place-ment/International Baccalaureate, Hon-

ors, College Prep and Academic Core. To provideadditional classroom time and flexibility, a modifiedblock schedule is used three days per week. Teachersand administrators of Homewood-Flossmoor believethe greatest service we can provide our students is aneducation that provides them with the intellectual, emotional and social skills necessary to succeed in theirpost-secondary life. To this end, H-F has adopted anopen-enrollment policy for course selection, which permits students and theirfamilies to select courses under the professional advisement of their guidancecounselors. Placement in courses and levels is largely by student choice, yetthe school encourages students to aspire to the highest course levels, resultingin an increase in the number of students in AP courses. In 2016, 1,025 APexams were taken at H-F, and — on those tests — our students scored a 3 orhigher and beat the national average in 10 subject areas.

Approximately 300 course options areavailable in nine departments: AppliedAcademics, English, Fine Arts, Math-

ematics, Science, Social Science,

Physical Education/Health/Driver

Education, Special Education andWorld Language. Many of these courses— including those in the STEM fields —offer challenging, experiential learningopportunities. The school subscribes to a

“push-pull philosophy:” students are pushed to take the most rigorous coursesthat are right for them then are pulled through with support systems. Theexcellent H-F Library services students as well through its more than 35,000items, with approximately 15,000 items circulating each year. Open from 7:30a.m. - 5:45 p.m. for student and staff use, the library is staffed by professionallibrarians and features more than 20 subscription databases for research.

The H-F IB Prep Academy and IB Diploma Programme align with ourmission to uphold the highest standards of intellectual growth. H -F is a comprehensive high schoolthat provides students with

opportunities for the pursuit of academicexcellence and personal growth. Thecurriculum provides structure and tradi-tional courses, yet offers students many

options to explore and develop their individual talents. The Fine Arts Depart-ment believes that the quality of a student’s life is uniquely enriched by thedevelopment of skills and values learned in the creation and/or performance ofthe Fine Arts. Study of the Fine Arts encourages students to function on multi-ple intellectual, analytical, thoughtful and expressive levels. At a time whenschools across the nation are cutting back on — and even eliminating — FineArts programming, H-F remains committed to this valuable area of education.

H-F's Visual Arts Department was

named the best in the state of

Illinois in 2013 by the Illinois Art

Education Association. Our FineArts wing is busy throughout the schoolday with the sounds of music from ourchoirs, orchestras and bands.
