Weekly Reflection

Manna from heaven. What is it?

The gift of manna came down upon God’s chosen people as they wandered in the desert. The people were unfamiliar with this “stuff” that appeared on the ground in the morning but which sustained them throughout the day. Its presence was a gift which tasted like honey to the people. However, it could not be stored and could not be hoarded. So each day, the people had to grow in trust that God would provide. Our passage from Deuteronomy 8 states that: Not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” What the Hebrew people learned was to never forget the provi-dence of God. It is from this passage that the Gospel of John takes its inspira-tion. Jesus, “the Living Bread Come down from heaven”, offers life everlasting. Just as the manna sustained life for those in the desert, so now sharing in Jesus, the Bread of Life, we share the very life of Christ. The gift of the Eucharist is a sharing in the saving gift of Jesus in his great act of love for us on the cross. Through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection, that is, the Pas-chal Mystery, the Lamb that was sacrificed for us, is now giving us everlasting life. Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians af-firms that we share in God’s saving grace through our reception of the One Bread and the One Cup. Our unity is confirmed by our sharing in the Body of Christ. The People of Israel shared in the manna that mysteriously appeared each morn-ing. Manna, which is translated, What is it?, nourished their bodies and their covenant relationship with God. Today, we share in Jesus, the Bread of Life and the Cup of Bless-ing. We do this In Memory Of Him, whose Body has been offered and whose Blood has been poured out for the forgiveness of sins. By this saving action, we remember every time we gather for the Eucharistic celebration, how God loves us. St. Augustine reminded his community, “Receive who you are” when he dis-tributed communion. On this day, we know who we receive and who it is we imitate.

“Let us proclaim the Mystery of Faith”

On this Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, once known as Corpus Christi, we celebrate the great self-gift of Jesus Christ pre-sent in the Eucharist. Under the appearance of Bread and Wine, we profess that Jesus is truly present: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. This treasure is offered for

us as the means by which we deepen in holiness. In a profound way, the transformation that takes place on the altar of sacrifice, is what must take place in us. We are united as the Body of Christ with one another because we are to become more and more the Body of Christ. Personal transfor-mation takes place by our deepening awareness through our prayer, our reflection, and our reception of the Eucharist. We become who we receive.

When this awareness and transformation is taking place in us, then we realize the bond we share as one in the Body of Christ. It is this precious gift that we then wish to share by all we say and do. In chapter 6 of the Gospel of John, we encounter Jesus the Bread of Life. What a gift that we hear announced: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” This life-giving bread has been passed on from generation to gener-ation as the central sacrament of the Church. It is the sacrament of our identity in Christ which we celebrate Sunday after Sunday as the Body of Christ.

It is in this spirit that we realize that handing on our belief in the Eu-charist is a great gift and a great responsibility for the Lord’s saving presence in our lives. We offer the Eucharist to our younger members at their First Commun-ion to embrace them by a com-munity of faith that reaches out to the whole family. Our outreach extends to the sick and home-bound in our community who, at the time of need, desire the con-solation of the Eucharist. Ministers to the sick and homebound are a blessing to those they serve and

to this parish community. Similarly, our liturgical Eucharistic ministers are a special blessing to us during mass so that we can offer the Body and Blood of Christ to all. It is the command of love that calls us to “Take and eat, take and drink” from the well-spring of salvation. May the Lord send us more ministers of the Eucharist for those who desire to receive Christ our Bread of Life. Could this Mystery of Faith be an invitation the Lord is offering you

Hit the park safely this summer

A great way to beat summer boredom is to head out to the park and play. For many parents, parks provide the space

and place for children to play with others and burn off some ener-gy by running around and exploring. However, even in your own neighborhood parks, parents should be vigilant, and should pre-pare children with basic safety guidelines. Go over the posted rules of the playground with your children, and make sure they understand the boundaries of where they can and cannot play. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Playground Safety Con-siderations,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Watch this space for future book selections and consider joining us for the discussions. Books are recommended and selected by the Book Discussion Group members. ¿SABIA USTED?

Cub Scouts

Congratulations to the Cub Scouts from Our Lady of the Assumption Parish who earned their Religious Emblem awards. The Light of Christ award helps first through second grade boys develop a personal relationship with Jesus by becoming a real per-son and a friend to them. Those receiving the award are: Diego Magana, Matthew McReynolds and Steven Montgomery.

The Maccabee Religious Emblem was developed to help first and second grade boys learn more about their Jewish faith. The Scouts learn about Jewish names, holidays, terms, symbols and objects, community helpers, and he-roes. Dylan Beyer is receiving this award.

Defenders of Life

Defenders of Life are a group of Pro-Life men and women from many parishes, who work together on events and activities to advance Pro-Life in our parishes, our neigh-borhoods, and among friends and family. We meet once each month

at Our Lady of the Assumption parish. The June meeting will be Wednesday June 28th at 3:00 PM at the Parish House located at 21 N. Dunning St. Recognizing that not all interested people are able to attend meetings, we wel-come participation via e-mail. If you are interested in be-ing informed about current activities of Defenders of Life, please send your message and e-mail address to [email protected].

Congratulations!!

Congratulations to all graduating Seniors from St. Bonaventure, Foothill, Ventura and El Camino High schools! OLA fami-ly: Please keep them in your prayers as they make their way into colleges around

the country, the workforce and into our military services. Pray that they keep their faith close and are safe in their journeys. May the power of our own faith community keep them strong on a path with Jesus.
