This Saturday, 11th of May, is the official start to our Hin2H program for 2013. We ask that every Saturday players report to their managers/coaches at least 15 minutes prior to the start of their session. Coaches will be starting

promptly to enable them to complete the pre-game program within the timeframe they have.

Team Managers are keeping an attendance roll this season as the Club is recording the number of games played by all players each season – players will then be recognized when reaching certain milestones.

Please can you confirm your contact details with your team manager on the first Saturday to ensure you are kept up to date with relevant information.

Below are the starting times for the various groups:

Minkey (Kindy/PP): 8:30 am to 9:30 am – At MacDonald Reserve

Graduates (Year 1/2): 8:30 am to 9:40+am – At MacDonald Reserve

Post Graduates (Year 3/4): 10:00 am to 11:30 am – At MacDonald Reserve, Iluka and Ellenbrook

(First week all games will be at MacDonald Reserve)

The Minkey and Graduates’ program will run as in the past, on a 1/4 field, although some Graduate teams may play at Ellenbrook on occasion.

The Post Graduates will be playing between MacDonald Reserve and Iluka, and occasionally at Ellenbrook. For the

first 4 weeks they will play on a 1/2 field after which they will play a full field. Fixtures will be sent to Team Managers and Coaches who will then pass them on to parents. The fields will be numbered and a field plan will be

up at the Canteen, along with the fixtures on the notice board.

We ask that parents are mindful of the fact that some coaches and umpires, at this level, are learning the ropes - parents and junior players. Senior mentors will be roaming the fields and assisting each Saturday to enable our

club to develop these important volunteers.

A reminder that, although winning is good, at this level developing coordination, hockey skills and, above all, good sportsmanship is what the game is all about! At the end of the day your child should have had a whole lot of fun!

Remember an important safety point: all players have to have a mouth guard and shin pads to be able to play a

game!

If you haven’t yet picked up your child’s team shirt (or exchanged your shirt if you have been notified that you have moved teams), the uniform shop is only open at the clubrooms from 6:30 – 8’ish p.m. every Thursday night

during the season. Any outstanding fees can be paid then too. All fees need to be paid and shirts collected by this Thursday 9th May in readiness for your child to “hit the field running” on Saturday morning. Please give Gill a call before Thursday night, if you have any queries regarding registration, or uniform matters, and she will try to help

you out if you can’t manage to get to the club on Thursday night during the opening hours.

We are looking forward to another great hockey season in 2013 – remember to support our Canteen!!

Regards Hin2H Committee

Umpiring

Hi everyone! We've all had umpires who we think shouldn't be umpiring - they "suck" or are described using very unparliamentarily language. As a player, it's frustrating to say the least. For me, as an umpire as well, there have been many games where I've wanted to grab the whistle and take over (ask anyone in the 40s Vets!). But it's worth just taking a minute or two just thinking about why you thought that the ump sucked. And usually it's so easy to fix that when it's your turn to umpire, you can save yourself so much angst and so stop (or at least reduce) players having a go at you. Even better, it's not having an encyclopedic knowledge of the rules or their interpretations. Players don't run onto the field at the start of the game thinking "this ump sucks" (well they shouldn't) - they are prepared to give the umps a go as long as they try their best and are fair. We all know that decisions are going to go against us - we just want consistency - and it's very rare that you get a deliberately biased umpire. (Trust me - if you do get a deliberately biased ump, you know it. There's a big difference between a biased and a hostile ump). So what causes players' opinions to degrade over the game and hence all the on ground animosity? The usual answer to why the ump sucks is "s/he didn't know the rules" - but the next sentence is where the problem lies. How many times do you hear as the next sentence - "how could s/he see that from all the way over there?" or "s/he blew for that one but the same thing over there wasn't blown"? Both of those qualifiers have nothing to do with knowing the rules - they're about how the umpire umpired. All you have to remember is 2 things - your position and your standards. As an umpire, your position is a like defending left half back. You run from the attacking 23 line into the defending D. The closer to the ball you are, the more likely you are to see anything as well as it's far more likely that the players will believe you. As far as position is concerned the most important thing is that every time the ball crosses the 23 in attack you as the ump are inside the D watching it come to you. Secondly, set your standards early. The behavior you accept in the 1st 5 minutes of the game is the baseline for the best behavior you're going to get throughout the game. As the players get tired through the game their skills and abilities drop. Hence if you set a high enough standard at the start of the game, then at the end of the game, the behavior should be still above the level that's acceptable. It also sets in your mind what the boundary is making later decisions much easier. So right from the start, if you see players at 4 m rather than 5, an average tackle or a bit of body, then blow LOUD and pull them up. If it's something that the player wouldn't do at training or should know better than to do, use the green card - you aren't doing anyone (least of all yourself) any favors by being "nice" at the start. Remember, prevention is much better than cure..... Just by doing these two things when you ump, it eliminates the vast majority of reasons for the arguments. You'll always make mistakes and yep, there's always 50/50s. But if you're umpiring rather than just making decisions, it will make it much easier for everyone - especially you. Oh, and as for not knowing the rules, that's an easy fix too - read the rulebook. They're on line.... Blow loud. Steve – Umpire Coordinator
