Viña del Mar, com-monly called just Viña, wasdeveloped in the 1870s as an exclusive residential and sum-mer area for Chile’s well-to-do. It is still that, but has evolved into Chile’s premiere seaside resort, often called Chile’s Riviera.

Viña offers all the ame-nities of a resort city:luxurious estates, including the summer home of the President of Chile, waterfront hotels, parks and gardens, social clubs, a munici-pal casino and theater, sport facilities, beaches, golf tennis, horse racing, lively nightlife, fine dining, and easy access to the

nearby beaches and resort towns of Zapallar, Con-con, Cachagua, and the fast-grow-ing and hugely popular town of Reñaca. L o c a t e d 74 miles (120km) northwest of San-tiago and 5 miles (8km) north of Val-paraíso in the Pa-cific Ocean, Viña is in the Central Zone of Valparaiso

and well connected to the central valleys and locations north and south of the city. Getting to Viña and Valparaiso is easy. There are daily busses to and from the city to Santiago and the inter-national airport. The main roads are Highway 68 (Ruta 68) from the South through Agua San-ta and Highway 60 (Ruta 60) from Argentina via Quillota and Concón .

Viña del Mar, comúnmente llamada Viña, comienza su desarrollo en 1870 como un exclusivo bal-neario residencial para la clase alta Chilena. Aun con-serva parte de su gloria de antaño, ya que cuenta con lujosos resorts y suelen llama-rle la Rivera Chilena.

Viña cuenta con todos los encantos de una ciudad resort de lujo, incluy-endo la Casa de verano del Presidente de Chile, hote-les frente al mar, parques, jardines, clubes sociales, un casino, teatros, recintos de-portivos, playas, canchas de tenis, cabalgatas, entreteni-da vida nocturna, alta gas-tronomía y buenos accesos a las playas vecinas como

Zapallar, Concón, Cacha-gua y el creciente y popular balneario de Reñaca. Ubicada a 120km al Noroeste de Santiago y 8km al norte de Valparaíso en el océano pacifico, Viña está en la zona central de Val-paraíso y muy bien conecta-da con los valles interiores y

localidades al Norte y Sur de la región. Llagar a Viña y Valparaíso es muy fácil, diariamente hay buses que salen y llegan desde Santiago y del Aeropuerto Interna-cional. La principal carretera para llegar es la Ruta 68 desde Santiago, por

el norte está la ruta 60, que conecta desde Argentina vía Quillota y Concón.

Explora takes people to the greatest high-lights of Chile and South America, such as: Atacama Desert and Patagonia. In September 2009, Explora Tour made an awe-some trip for exchange students, during nine days to Atacama Desert and La Serena zone. The tour visit-ed the principal attractions of San Pedro de Atacama such as : The Tatio Gaysers, The Moon Valley, Puritama Hot Springs and The Ata-cama Saltflat, Going back to Elqui Valley in La Serena, Mamalluca Astronomic ob-servatory and Isla Damas into the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve in Punta

de Choros. Last Patagonia Tour was in December 2009, during nine days the group visited Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales, enjoying a nice trekking in Torres del Paine, Milodon Cave, Ot-way Pingüineras and more. Now Explora is of-fering for January 2010 an amazing tour to the Bolivia´s Amazonia through the Lau-ca National Park in Chile, visiting Putre, Chungara Lake and La Paz. The Trip considers a visit to Rurrena-baque village in Amazonia, staying three days in the “Pampas”, fishing piranhas, watching its pink dolphins, monkeys, alligators and en-joying the real Amazonas nature.

En septiembre 2009, Exploratour realizó un increíble viaje para estu-diantes de Intercambio, quienes durante 9 días recorrieron las zonas de San Pedro de Atacama y La Serena, visitando las prin-cipales atracciones, tales como los Geysers de Tatio, el Valle de la Luna, las Ter-

mas de Puritama, el Salar de Atacama y volviendo luego al Valle del Elqui, en La Serena, el Observa-torio Astronómico Cerro Mamalluca e Isla Damas en el Parque Nacional Pingüino de Hum-boltdt. El Patago-nia Tour se realizó en Diciembre de 2009, donde visi-taron Punta Arenas y Puerto Natales, disfrutando de una entretenida cami-nata por Torres del Paine, la Cueva del Milodón , las Pingüin-eras de Otway y más. Para Enero 2010, ExploraTour se encuentra ofre-ciendo un increíble tour a la Amazonía Boliviana pasan-do a través del Parque Nacional Lauca, visitando Putre, el Lago Chungará y la Paz. El tour considera visitar el po-blado de Rurrenabaque en la Amazonía, quedándose 3 días en las “pampas”, pescando pirañas, viendo delfines rosados, monos, yacarés y disfrutando de la verdadera naturaleza Amazónica.

LA PLACA ROJA

For addicted to adventure, mountains and artifi-cial climbing, the Placa Roja is a classic route of

climbing near Santiago transforming your trip in a great and interesting challenge. Located in the deep Cajon del Maipo, just in front of the Baños Morales village, are located the Red, Green and Grey plates. Each one con-formed by different minerals which give them their characteristic colors. Placa Roja has intermediate difficulty, with some steps level 5.9 in the external border and high difficulty from its side or mirror (espejo). For climb-ing up it is necessary to have at least 4 to 5 hours and 2 hours for getting down. It’s very important to have a good planning to climb all with day light. It´s recommendable to climb up with a pro-fessional guide. Also, carry sun block cream, water, food and frontal lamps. About the climbing equip-ment: 2 ropes of 50mts (rappelling down needs 2), at least 10 quickdraws, one extra set of carabineers, a set of hexcentrics or SLCD (friends), helmet and harness. It is recommendable to inform in “carabine-ros” (police) of San Gabriel about your climb, to make sure that the rescue teen is informed that a group is climbing at the zone.

The best season to go is from September to May.Ideal Group: 3 to 4 people.

Para los adictos a la aventura, las montañas y la escalada artificial, la Placa Roja es un clásico

de las ascensiones cerca de Santiago, la cual puede hacer tu viaje, un entretenido e interesante desafío. Enclavada frente al poblado de Baños Morales, en lo profundo del Cajón del Maipo se encuentran las Placas: Roja, Verde y Gris. Forma-ciones rocosas cada una de ellas conformada por distintos min-erales que les dan su color característico. La Placa Roja es una escalada intermedia, con algunos pasos de nivel 5,9 por el filo y con dificultad alta por el costado o espejo. Para subir se debe disponer de 4 a 5 horas y 2 horas para bajar, por lo que se debe hacer una buena planificación para tener luz de día. Es recomendable contratar un guía profesional, también se debe llevar bloqueador solar, agua, raciones, linterna frontal. En cuanto al equipo de escalada; dos cuerdas de 50 mts (En la bajada de utilizan 2) al menos 10 cintas express, un juego de excéntricos (empotradores) o friends, Cascos y Arnés. Se sugiere dar aviso en carabineros de San Gabriel para que los equipos de res-cate estén al tanto que hay un grupo escalando en la zona.
