Our spring /summer programme is our biggest ever with something for everyone. Highlights during May – Aug include:
Booked! our Festival of Words runs between 13th May & 1st June. This year’s festival is larger than ever and continues to grow in popularity. The festival has attracted authors and artists from across the UK and this year’s programme includes; Sir Harry Burns Chief Medical Officer for Scotland who will be giving the Alastair Pearson Lecture; historian Professor Tom Devine; William McIlvanney and Alan Massie; and Alistair Gray. The festival also includes ‘The Steamie Reunion’ a unique evening with Dorothy Paul and Eileen McCallum.
With the refurbishment of Clydebank Town Hall Museum & Gallery now complete it will be hosting a major retrospective of John Lowrie Morrison (Jolomo). Jolomo is one of Scotland’s most popular and successful artists, ‘Jolomo the Retrospective’ will be one of the highlights of the visual arts calendar in summer 2013 and is a major coup for the authority.
There are lots of activities for children and families in our libraries including Bookbug Sessions, Storytimes, Baby massage and yoga, as well as our annual Summer Reading Challenge. For older children and young people we offer Homework Clubs and Study Groups in the main branches.
Clydebank Museum and Gallery is promoting a Saturday Archaeology Club, and FREE Arts and Crafts activities throughout the summer holidays. For young people interested in the arts why not join our Youth Theatre, Junior Dance Company or ‘STAMP!’. To accompany our exhibitions programme we are running a number of visual arts and crafts classes for adults including classes in watercolours, oils and landscapes.
If you’re not of an artistic bent take a look at our Quest Courses including courses in word processing, writing CV’s and an introduction to Windows 8.
We hope you enjoy this edition of What’s On and find plenty of interest to you, your friends and family.

One of Scotland’s most successful and best loved artists, John Lowrie Morrison – affectionately known as Jolomo - is to host a major Retrospective exhibition at the newly refurbished Clydebank Town Hall. This landmark Retrospective, named A Passion for Colour: Jolomo – the Retrospective, will run from June to September 2013 and bring together his best works from a career spanning nearly 40 years.
The show not only celebrates John’s love of Scotland but places him firmly in the long tradition of great British landscape painters who have become associated with particular areas of natural beauty. Alongside these internationally acclaimed landscapes, the exhibition showcases a number of previously unseen works including drawings and paintings from John’s school years, giving us a glimpse into what inspired and influenced the young artist; work from the formative years spent at Glasgow School of Art demonstrating his breadth of skill in design, exceptional draughtsmanship in figurative art and a move towards the use of high key colour- a defining aspect of his work. This is an exhibition not to miss!

Meet others who are due at the same time as you! Whatever you are going through, you are not alone. Share your experiences (good and not so good) with other parents-to-be and let us know if you have any helpful tips.
The focus will be on what your baby can already do and what can be done to make him or her welcome. The programme includes video material to introduce mums-to-be to the development of your baby in its first months. You are also encouraged to identify their own needs and how to access support both in pregnancy and after the birth of their baby.

Have you experienced the Windows 8 nightmare or thinking of buying a new computer or laptop? This course is for someone who has been using a computer but has recently bought a new computer that has the new Windows 8 operating system installed.
The new operating system is vastly different from the past versions and has raised some questions from even the most experience computer user…
• Where has the Desktop gone?• Where has the Start button and menu gone?• How do I close the computer down? • Where is the media centre?• How do you connect to a Wireless network?• Where is the Control Panel?• Where have my files gone?
Unfortunately you don’t get an instruction manual with the operating system so these questions and many more will be answered on this short course. It’s an ideal chance if you have bought a new laptop to bring it along and use it in the class.
This course and many more will be open for applications from

A SUMMER OF FILM
We have lined up three great films to show in libraries during the summer period:
The Best Exotic Marigold HotelBritish retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways.
AtonementFledgling writer Briony Tallis, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. Based on the British romance novel by Ian McEwen.
Les MiserablesThe motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages - still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, the film tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption - a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Ex-prisoner Jean Valjean is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

CENTENARY OF CLYDEBANK LIBRARY
2013 marks the Centenary of Clydebank Library and an exhibition to mark this occasion will be on show in the Heritage Centre at Clydebank. Clydebank Library is housed in a "Carnegie building". This is one of the many late 19th and early 20th century public library buildings in Scotland that owe their existence to the financial generosity of the Scottish-born American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. (1835-1919). The interior has had a number of refurbishments over the years while the imposing classical exterior has remained virtually unchanged. The library has operated within three different local authorities since it opened. Today it is the main public library for the Clydebank area of West Dunbartonshire stretching from Old Kilpatrick in the west to the boundary with Glasgow on the east.

FIRST WORLD WARCOMMEMORATION EXHIBITIONS:YOUR AREA NEEDS YOU!As the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War approaches, the Arts and Heritage team are in the planning stages of a series of exhibitions to commemorate the outbreak of hostilities in 1914. West Dunbartonshire played its part in the conflict both at home, with its heavy industries, and on the frontline with men from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and other regiments serving and women playing their role in the conflict as nurses and ambulance drivers. We would like to hear your stories and see your artefacts in our exhibitions. If you feel you have an object that would interest other residents of West Dunbartonshire relating to the First World War then get in touch.
