RSC: Love Labour’s Lost (Live Screening) Summer 1914. In order to dedicate themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years. No sooner have they made their pledge than the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive, presenting them with a severe test of resolve. Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to submit to a period apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be utterly transformed by the war to end all wars. RSC: Love Labour’s Won (Live Screening) Autumn 1918. A group of soldiers return from the trenches. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio fi nd themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of confl ict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly, deeply in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship. Shakespeare’s comic romance plays out amidst the brittle high spirits of a post-war house party, as youthful passions run riot, lovers are deceived and happiness is threatened – before peace ultimately wins the day. Christopher Luscombe directs the second of Shakespeare’s matching pair of comedies that rejoice in our capacity to fi nd love in the most unlikely places. Better known as Much Ado About Nothing, the play is performed under the title Love’s Labour’s Won, a name possibly given to it during Shakespeare’s lifetime.Time: 19:00 Price: £11 - £12.50 Place: Jersey Opera House, Gloucester Street, St Helier Tel: 01534 511115Web: www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk

La Lande de Ouest Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs along the greater part of the south-west coast. A designated Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in fl ora and fauna, this area is an important part of the island’s landscape, and biodiversity. A great area for walking and bird watching.

Le Noir PréOften known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining wet meadows. Le Noir Pré and the smaller Le Clos du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-fl owered Orchid (Orchis Laxifl ora). Orchid fl owering season May and June.

St Catherine’s WoodsAlso known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a deep-cut, steep-sided valley. A stream running through the valley fl oor has helped develop a wide range of habitats within the woodland.

Les LandesThis coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160 hectares and bound by 3 km of high granite cliffs.

Ramsar Sites These are areas listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance which concerns the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Jersey has four! These magnifi cent sites are; the south-east coast of Jersey, Le Minquiers, Les Ècréhous, and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de lecq (The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and worth a visit; however, three of these sites are offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out the “Activities” section of the operators who can take you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south coast area can be walked around and guided walks are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see “Activities”). Important! If you wish to walk around the area independently please seek advice fi rst as the tide rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is essentially. Jersey Tourism can provide advice if necessary but recommends that you employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide.

Val de la Mare Arboretum Hidden away in the north west corner of the Island next to Val de la Mare reservoir, is one of Britain’s most unique collection of trees in an arboretum called ‘The Forgotten Forest’. Planted in the late 1970s, seedlings grown from seeds gathered all over the world have progressed into an eclectic collection of mature trees. Divided into zones within the arboretum, North American maples and oaks stand near Australasian eucalyptus trees, interesting fl ora compliment a majestic wingnut, walnut and hickory zone. Don’t miss a giant Californian redwood specimen or the Japanese zone alongside the conifers and pines. There’s even an ‘Elm Trial Zone’ containing species of the tree which are thought to be resistant to Dutch elm disease.

The centre is accessed by a tunnel, which takes visitors through a dune mound and opens out to give amazing panoramic views of the reed bed and pond. This unique perspective is achieved without disturbing the waders and waterfowl from doing what they do. The Wetland Centre also provides a visitor-controlled mounted camera to allow an interactive and entirely new aspect on the ponds feathered visitors and residents. A live feed ‘reed bed cam’ also gives visitors a previously unseen insight into the reeds’ occupants such as the Marsh Harrier and the elusive Bittern!

Beaches to choose from

BEACH LIFEGUARDS IN JERSEY A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red and yellow fl ags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the fl ags, but note that when a red fl ag is fl ying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal fl ows in the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask.St Brelade’s Bay has been voted one of the top 10 beaches in the UK by Tripadvisor’s Travellers Choice.
