Once youve capturedan idea you can edit it, tag it with yourown keywords (e.g. canon, lyrical, riff) tohelp nd it later, or even colour-code it.The Ideas window lets you browse andsearch through all the available ideas bykeyword tags, instrument, time signature, key and so on, and even play them back.

They could start with just one or two

ideas for inspiration, or alternativelyuse ideas as building blocks to createa complete piece. You can keep trackof what theyve done, because Sibeliusmarks where ideas are used in the score.

If you prefer, you can switch off all of theready-made ideas, or just give studentsa few specic ones, for more focusedexercises.

Panorama is a new, clearer way ofviewing music in Sibelius. Instead ofbeing chopped up into systems andpages, the music is shown in a single,innitely-wide strip far easier to readand navigate around. So now you can justthink about the notes, and forget about

page layout until youre ready to print. You can switch between Panoramaand normal view whenever you like,or use Panorama in combination withFocus on Staves if you just want tolook at a few instruments.

An easier way to composeAs well as allowing you to forget about page layout duringcomposition, Panorama makes the whole experience ofinputting music more enjoyable. Because theres only onesystem on the page, Sibelius can move smoothly from leftto right as you compose, without any disorientating jumpsfrom one system to another. Dragging staves in Panoramawont affect the layout of the real score. So you really arefree to think about your music without any distractions.

    Panorama

Encourages students to create morePanorama provides benets in education too.Teachers often nd that page layout acts asan articial barrier for students, and that theystop composing when they reach the end of apage; Panorama removes this barrier, encouragingstudents to take their ideas further and explore

    greater possibilities in their compositions.

Magic MarginNo matter where you navigate to in your music,Panoramas Magic Margin makes it crystal clearwhat stave youre on. It even reects changes toinstruments on the same stave, something thatsnow incredibly easy to set up.

Customise cue appearanceSibelius 5 does the work of creatingcues for you, but you still have completecontrol over how they appear. You canchoose whether you want articulationsand dynamics to be included, and whetheryou want the cue to have new clefsand octave lines or be transposed to anappropriate pitch for the destinationinstrument.

Easy instrument changesScores often have two or moreinstruments played by the same person, such as percussion, or clarinet doublingsaxophone. Or sometimes you needto rewrite a whole part for a differentinstrument. Now Sibelius will do thisautomatically for you: simply put aninstrument change anywhere in themusic, and Sibelius 5 will change theinstrument from that point onwards altering its name, clef, sound, even the

transposition and staff type if necessary.Plus, if you write for unusual instrumentsyou can now design your own, choosingthe name, clef, range, sound, etc. youwant. From glockenrimba to trumpet inF#, your imagination is the only limit!

Create cues instantlyCreating cues in parts is now the work ofa moment. Simply copy the music youwant to appear in the cue, and choosePaste As Cue. Sibelius 5 does the rest foryou it makes the cue small, puts it in asuitable voice, transposes it or changesclef as necessary, deletes dynamics andarticulations (optional), adds a text label, hides the cue in the score, and stops itplaying back. You can even add

a cue to multiple instruments at once.Whats more, there are two new plug-insto make cueing even easier. Suggest CueLocations suggests suitable points forcues in your score, based on either thenumber of bars rest or the duration of arest in a part, while Check Cues veriesthat cues youve previously added are stillcorrect, in case youve changed the music.

Even easier instrumental partsTakes care o everything: instructions, clesand transposition changes, with just one click.

    orchestrator and guitarist

Insert blank pagesYou can now insert blank pages anywherewith a couple of clicks, then add text, graphics, etc. to produce title pages andperformance instructions. They even workin parts too in fact, you can make anyblank page or title page appear in the score, the parts, or both.

    Different margins fordifferent pages

Scores no longer need to use the samemargins throughout you can setdifferent margins on different pages, e.g.to allow room for titles and copyrightlines. Plus you can now easily altermargins in parts.

House StylesWhen importing a house style, or copyingbetween scores, Sibelius 5 only adds extratext styles, line types, notehead types, symbols and so on where necessary, and

wont overwrite existing ones if theydiffer. You can now also move individualtext styles and other object typesbetween scores.

Complete layout controlFlexible numberingBar numbers, page numbers and rehearsalmarks now support special numberingformats used in some types of score.

Bar numbersYou can set any passage of music(such as introductions and insertedsections) to use special bar numberformats, e.g. 1a, 1b, 1c or a, b, cin capitals or small letters.Or use your own prex/sufx, such as 1

new, 2 new, alt 1, alt 2 You can alsonumber bars in any frequency you like, such as every 8 bars instead of 10.

Bar numbering can now take account ofrepeats in various formats. Automatic barnumbers can be selected, moved, hiddenand ltered just like anything else. And tomake it all easier, the main bar numberoptions are now all in a single dialog.

    Page numbers

Sibelius 5 lets you renumber, changethe format of, or hide page numbersanywhere in a score. For example, youcould number the introductory pages of

    Bar numbers, page

    number changes and

    instrument changes are

    all stunningly simple!

    Robert Pu, copyist

    and engraver

    As well as special

    number ormats,

    bar numbering can

    now take account

    o repeats in various

    ormats.

Rehearsal marksAdd automatic prexes/sufxes torehearsal marks, e.g. 1A, 2A, 3A Andwhere rehearsal marks coincide with barnumbers, you can hide the bar numbersautomatically to avoid collisions.
