Runbooks


Introduction

o Goal:

» Reduce Mean-Time-To-Repair (MTTR)

» Increase Mean-Time-Between-Failures (MTBF)

» A mechanism to implement best practices

» Increase effectiveness of IT personnel (automate repetitive tasks)

o Many organizations leverage ‘playbooks’ to document process and best practices within the team. Now, with Runbooks, you can ‘digitize’ your playbooks and make them fully executable. Runbooks integrates multiple features of NetBrain into a repeatable and shareable process.


Browse Runbooks

You can browse Runbook via the ribbon bar or the map context menu.


Run Runbook

o Run each step node (click ) in the Runbook from the preview pane onthe map.

The play button causes theresult displayed on the map


Runbook Analysis

o Runbook results are saved to the map on which the Runbook was executed. You can annotate more context and share the RBA for further collaboration.

o You can view a Runbook’s execution history on the map.


Creating Runbooks

o You can create a new Runbook via the Runbook editor. Runbook consolidates many of NetBrain built-in functions: Run Qapp, Run Monitor Qapp, Change Analysis, CLI Commands, Ping, Traceroute, Discover, and Free text.

o Multiple nodes can be added as branches which allows your decisions to impact flow.

Instant Qapp


Introduction

o Instant Qapp is a new form of “Drag and Drop” Automation

» Reduces the need for end-users to leave the map to Automate

» Search, drag-and-drop, refresh/monitor and alert

» Multiple data sources

o Expands the options available for the Drill-down phase of M-PHD

» Map = Build the map

» Probe = Overall-Health checking

» Historical Analysis = Benchmark and live data comparison

» Drill-down = Qapp, Execute CLI, View device Data, Instant Qapp


Activate and Search for the data

o Every Qmap now has an Instant Qapp Action button.

o Activating Instant Qapp allows you to search for data to automate.


Display on the Map

o Drag the variables from the search results to the map to make them visual instantly and save it as a Qapp.


Search Results

o Search results are categorized and can be filtered based on the following types:

» CLI parser

» Configuration Parser

» Variable Group

» Device Property

» Interface Property

» Qapp

o Data can be pulled from the live network (default) or other data folder.

UI and Path Enhancements


User Interface Enhancements

o 6.2 contains multiple UI enhancements

o The goal is to simplify the way that users interface with their network

» Group commonly used functions and provide more context sensitive results to enable easy access

» Improve on the visual representation of functions to draw the users attention to the right grouping and function

» Reduce the amount of clicks to achieve a function

o More modern look and feel (e.g., brand new color scheme, optimized the map context menu’s)


Floating Menus Enhancements

o Floating menu options have been reorganized, including main floating menu and context sensitive menus (device, LAN segment, Path, etc.)


Path Control Panel

o In EE6.2, NetBrain calculates path with cache data by default.

o Path Control Panel allows quick access to common info/options:

» Options to select a different Path Type or Data Source and recalculate the path

» Run Path-aware or Monitor Qapps for monitoring or troubleshooting the devices along the path.


Path Input Intelligence

o You can select the endpoints or path displayed in the drop-down list.

o Predictive suggestions displayed when entering path data

» Matched IP addresses or devices will be intelligently displayed.

» Point and click operations to select a gateway


End Point Table

The End Point Table is a pre-defined correlation between an IP address or subnet and its corresponding gateway.

» Reduces the need to change the gateway manually

» End-point table is shared by all users of the system

Qapp Improvements


API Server

o API Server is a new option under Qapp Ribbon menu

o Use API Server to define credentials for 3rd party API integration

» This information is now centralized for all Qapps to reference


Qapp Qualification

o Qapp Qualification is a new feature added to filter Qapp and devices during execution

» Define devices supported by a Qapp in the Qualification section in Qapp Editor

» Reduces the time to find Qapps that run on the currently mapped devices

Qualification Choices:


Qapp Creation

o Qapp Type “Highlight Map” is now called “Annotate Map”.

o The interface key is now auto-populated.

o “Save & Run” allows the user to run the Qapp immediately.


Qapp Edit

o Qapps created using the Qapp Wizard can now be edited in the Wizard


Qapp Debug Log

o Added a new feature, Qapp Debug Log, to collects Qapp info, device info, and failure reasons in a multi-vendor network environment.

o The Qapp Debug Log can be exported as a map file and is sharable.

Auto Update

o New feature to check for updates automatically. This makes the upgrade easier and more convenient especially for the versions with a patch and minor releases.

o Updates for the current installed version are only supported (e.g. 6.2 to 6.2a).

o ONLY the client that is updated, not the Enterprise Edition server components.


Virtualization Enhancements

o Improve support for virtual IPs for the following devices:

» F5 – Traffic group floating IP

» Check Point – Cluster IP


LWAP and WLC Enhancements

o Reduces the time to communicate with devices

» The system can retrieve all the inventory information, including device property, module property, and interface property for a device in one CLI session

o Added Device Role property to record discovery relationships for the following device type pairs:

o Client device data is saved inside Controller

» The system retrieves data from Cisco WLC for Cisco LWAP CDP/ARP/MAC

o Support Cisco LWAP and Aruba LWAP using the multi-vendor framework with Layer 2 data to build Layer 2 topology:

» Cisco LWAP: CDP/ARP/MAC table

» Aruba LWAP: LLDP/MAC table

» Cisco WLC/Cisco LWAP

» Aruba WLC/Aruba LWAP

Server Benchmark Enhancements

o Server benchmark tasks have been optimized to simplify operations and improve efficiency

o 2 built-in benchmark tasks are created automatically. You only need to set the recurrence pattern and enable the tasks.

» Basic System Benchmark – Retrieve basic network data for building topology and inventory report

» Path Data Benchmark – Retrieve network data for calculating path

o In addition, you can execute the following benchmarking tasks,

» Schedule Network Discovery to discover all network devices or specific IP address

» Create Customized Benchmarking Task to retrieve the required data


o All historical results of benchmark tasks and discovery tasks are centralized under the History Data Management. In the device log, you can see

data retrieval status for each device and select to retrieve data again for those that failed to return data.

System Requirements and Compatibility

o The installation package of NetBrain Enterprise Server 6.2 is provided in 64-bit only. Both Customer License Server (CLS) and Workspace Server (WSS) in version 6.2 support the following operating systems only:

» Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 64-bit

» Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 64-bit

o If the NetBrain system you have installed is earlier than version 5.4G1a, you need to upgrade it to version 5.4G1a first and then upgrade it to version 6.2.

o Make sure that you upgrade all NetBrain components to version 6.2 to ensure the best performance and avoid the potential compatibility risks.

» The Enterprise Server version 6.2 cannot work with the earlier versions of Workstation, and vice versa.

» If you have multiple Workspace Servers deployed, it is recommended to upgrade the Workspace Servers to version 6.2 first and then upgrade the Customer License Server.

o If you have installed the anti-virus software (such as Webroot), you need to upgrade it to the latest version first. Otherwise it may block the installation.
