FORDWICH

By Darcey Garniss Recently I came across a post on so-cial media wanting secret santa stock-ing ideas for residents of a local nursing home. After a discussion at home with our family, my girls thought what a great idea it would be for our local Fordwich Nursing home. We reached out and the home was receptive and agreeable it was a welcome holiday suggestion!

Christmas Giving

So the planning began! We asked local folks to pick a senior and fill a stocking to give to the seniors Christmas morning. As you may be aware there are strict restrictions on anyone visiting the home due to Covid-19. Our team along with Barbs help from the home , were able to fill lists for each senior which were items they might need or like for Christmas! Thanks goes out to Deanna Musgrove, Denice Glaze and the Garniss girls! The positive response was overwhelming !It wasn’t very long before all the 26 seniors at the nursing home had secret santas (less than 12 hours actually) We have a local family that offered to write out Christmas cards for each of the seniors as well. We know that Christmas this year in our community is going to be much brighter for a special group of our local seniors. Covid has certainly changed our lives forever, but with the amazing support from our caring community we can all make a difference( make it better??) Thank you to all who wholeheartedly jumped onboard and supported our little project

If you need something to help you get into the holiday spirit and out of the never ending covid blues why not take a stroll past the Fordwich Diner as the house next door to it Will Spiegl has been displaying his talents on the front windows of his house for ev-ery holiday over the past year. This Christmas, kids and kids at heart will be delighted by the sight of Mick-ey mouse spreading holiday cheer and the loveable but gloomy Eey-ore wearing antlers and showing the town even the biggest mopes can try to beat the covid blues. The guy who is creating these paintings is relatively new to the area but has been displaying his window paint-ings for years for all to enjoy. Grow-ing up in Kitchener his mom Bonnie Spiegl taught him at an early age to use his creative, artistic skills in many different forms. but teaching him to window paint has really stuck with him over the years. Its now be-come a third generation hobby as he has taught his 14 year old daughter Lilly Spiegl how to paint widows as well which makes it even more special to do. Having families stop and the kids smiling and enjoying the different creations is always a great thing to see. This year more then ever its great to be able to cheer people up and remind them that although it will likely be a little different celebrating the holidays this year we can all still enjoy the season and bring smiles to peoples faces in our own talented unique way!

December 2020

The Christmas season is upon us and shopping for pres-ents is on almost everyone's mind. Pandemic or no pan-demic I always think shopping local is a good idea.Going to the city to shop or shopping on line does not support our communities. Local businesses support our communities. Where do you think our sports teams and schools etc get their donations from. Not Amazon or Costco. Its our local business that donate, but also im-portant is the fact that these businesses are owned by our neighbors and our friends. This year is even more important to shop local as so many have had to shut down for months. Its time to support each other and help keep these businesses thriving, keep our communities thriving. Can you imagine if they all had to shut down and our only option was to drive to the city or order on line. What an impersonal world that would be. Sometimes it's so much easier to just pick up our phones and hop on the Internet and order our gifts and they show up at our door. But, how about this year, a year that has been difficult for so many, we make a real genuine effort. Take a look around and see what our community has to offer, see what stores or home businesses are in our area. See what they are offering. Keep an eye out for pop up Christmas stores or look on the buy and sell for neigh-bours selling their hand made products. Let's have an old fashioned Christmas for just this year, where we go in to stores, browse their wares, visit with other patrons or store owners. Say "Merry Christmas" to people we meet. Don't forget about Christmas dinner, we have many farm-ers offering fresh turkeys or roast beef. Local bakeries of-fering pies and squares and yummy treats. There are also a lot of service based businesses in our community that might offer gift certificates as a unique gift idea. Spend a little extra time to see what the area has to offer and how you might be able to contribute and keep our small businesses flourishing. Another great idea is to support our local food banks during this Christmas season. For that person who has everything, or you do not know what to buy them, how about a donation in their name. Look for places that are looking for donations of gifts for children or seniors and then go out shop local and donate, what a way to bring it full circle! Offer an older neighbour a gift of free snow shoveling or make an extra serving when cooking dinners and bring them dinner once a week. Volunteering our time in our community is also another great way to contribute. Howick is a wonderful caring community and if we all make an effort this Christmas season than we will contin-ue to see a bright future for our township!

Merry Christmas Everyone and remember to Support Local!

In honour of the 100 years since the Cenotaph in Fordwich was unveiled, and 75 years since the end of WW11, we were very pleased to have Doug Harkes, of Wroxeter, do a “flyover” during the Cenotaph service on November 11th. Doug owns a plane that was used to train the men during the war. It added a very special touch to the service, A very big Thank You, Doug for doing this!

HOWICK CENTRAL SCHOOLAs I write this article, the weather is cur-rently sunny and twenty degrees Celsius in November! This beautiful weather has allowed our classes to be outside a lot more and teachers and students have definitely taken advantage of the current situation. All of our classes have been very excited to use our newly created outdoor classroom space nestled among the pine trees along the Sanderson Trail. Great Canadian Landscaping installed beautiful armour stones to be used as “tables and/or desks” for our students. We are very grateful to our School Coun-cil for providing the funds to make this happen. I would also like to acknowledge Michelle Schaefer, for the time she spent researching and designing the space for our new classroom. Our next step is to label the various species of trees that are found along the Sanderson Trail. We hope the students of Howick will trea-sure this space for many years to come.

If the weather does turn our school yard into a winter won-derland our students will be ready with new snow shovels and crazy carpets for our snow hill that were also purchased by our School Council. We look forward to getting the op-portunity to use them. The year is going quickly and we are already starting to think about the next school year as we encourage families to register for kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year. This year we will not be inviting prospec-tive students to the school for the Calling All Three Year Old program; instead families are encouraged to register online. All children born in 2016 and 2017 are encouraged to register for Kindergarten. Register your child amdsb.ca/kindergarten. Once you are registered you will receive further information about child development and the Early Years Check in. If you have any questions please feel free to call the school office at 519-335-3566.

All of the classrooms took part in our Howick Bucket Chal-lenge and they had a lot of fun inventing games and activities with basic 5 gallon pails. As the classes don’t get the oppor-tunity to see each other on the school yard now, Mrs. Haans-tra created a video sharing what each class had done with their buckets. The students enjoyed seeing what each class had come up with. On Friday November 20th, the students will be able to participate in a school wide virtual assembly. The assembly is called Ned’s Mindset Mission. The message of the assembly will focus on the following three themes: 1. Never Give Up: The Power of Yet 2. Encourage Others and 3. Do Your Best. During the virtual assembly the students will also get to see some yo-yo tricks as well. The new mathemat-ics curriculum also focuses on the concept of growth mindset where students learn that it is okay to make mistakes as that is how we learn.

As you all know, Howick Legion members usually come to Howick to observe Remembrance Day with the students, but this year since COVID-19 restrictions, we could not do so. Individual classrooms honoured Remembrance day within their own classrooms and as a school we paid our respect by playing the song The Last Post on November 11. At that time we observered two minutes of silence as well. Howick students are currently working on posters and essays for the Legion Remembrance day contests and we hope to share the winners with you in an upcoming submission. This month we also had spirit days; which were jersey day on Friday the 13th, Twin day on Friday the 20th and PJ day on Friday the 27th. And that is what we were up to this month.

Huron Respite Network, along with the families that they sup-port, have taken the opportunity to show their gratitude for the respite providers who make a difference in people’s lives everyday. Respite providers give a break to parents or guard-ians who are full time caregivers of a child or adult with ex-ceptional needs. Respite is a vital tool that provides time for caregivers to rejuvenate, heal and refresh. It is essential for boosting a caregiver’s ability to cope and is a powerful tool for keeping families together. In Huron County over 100 families are accessing respite, 15 of those families are in immediate need of respite providers. There are an additional 50 families on a waitlist for service. Very early in the pandemic, HRN shift-ed the way they provided service as meeting in person, for some, was no longer a viable option. Throughout the shut-down the agency continued to receive feedback from families regarding the pivotal role that respite providers play in their lives as school, summer camps and recreation activities were no longer possible. In October HRN invited families to submit stories highlighting the impact that respite providers have on their lives. The sto-ries were posted to social media under “Thankful Thursdays” and celebrated the selflessness of those who provide respite and emphasised the importance of the work. Respite provid-ers all have their own unique gifts and talents that help to match them to the varied and unique needs of the families they support. Some provide support 2 – 3 hours a week and some invite a person into their home 1 weekend/month. Oth-ers choose respite as a career and work all week supporting

Making A Difference During A Pandemic

families and giving caregivers a break. The campaign’s goal is to recognize the selfless contributions of them all. Feedback for the project has been good and respite providers received a small token of appreciation and a meaningful letter from the families that they serve.Huron Respite Network continues to plan for a time when re-strictions are lifted and they can respond to families in need who may have been unable to continue with respite through Covid-19. Some will be in crisis. Some will have experienced even further social isolation exacerbating the physical and mental exhaustion of being the primary caregiver of a family member with a developmental or physical disability, autism or mental health concern. Many will be in need of someone in their life who can make a huge difference by giving a lit-tle of their time. For information on Huron Respite Network, becoming a respite provider and the Thankful Thursday cam-paign, visit the Huron Respite Network Facebook page.

Steven’s StoryThere are no words to convey the gratitude we feel for our respite providers that arrive with enthusiasm, smiles on their faces, positive energy and love in their hearts. Having pro-vided night and day care ourselves for 2 months during the pandemic, we were just too worn out to continue. Shelby and Mary Ellen, you raised us up and have carried us through these incredibly challenging times. So thankful for your sup-port. It is because of you both that we are able to keep our precious young man at home with us lovin’ the country life! You make Steven’s life so much richer! Thanks for all you do. We are so blessed to call you family! xo

Mary Ellen has been providing respite to Steven’s family for 2 years and often shares that she gets as much joy out of the time together as the family does.

Jackie Smith ~ With the combination of sad-ness and joy we say goodbye to Grace Jac-

queline Smith (Gage) of Listowel as she passes from this life on to the next, on Thursday, November 26, 2020, at the age of 91. She is survived by 4 children, David (Ellen) Smith of Coaldale AB, San-dy (Dave) Dorland of Phoenix AZ, Alyson

(Wayne) Nickel of Lakelet, and Colin (Deb) Smith of Chepstow. Also survived by her

brother Geoff Gage in Stratford. Remembered by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband of 59 years William “Bill”, her son Gordon in childhood, one great-grandchild in infancy, and her two sisters, Eleanor Rutley and Louise Marritt “Jackie” to her friends and “Buddy” to her family, was born in To-ronto and talked fondly of her days attending Jarvis Collegiate. After attaining her Teacher’s Certificate, she began teaching at SS11 in East Gwillimbury. It is here she met Bill and began her life as a farm wife in 1947. In 1967 they moved to Harriston to continue farming. She contin-ued her teaching at Howick Central School. Many former students had written personal notes on the positive influence she had on their life which she kept. Her faith also was a passion and she was actively involved in leading and teaching basic Christian principles through her example. After retiring from the farm, Jackie and Bill travelled Canada and the United States, enjoying fishing and camping plus visiting their family. Whenever a family need arose, Jackie did not hesitate to help. She actively babysat great-grandchildren into her eighties, taking them swimming or to learning events. An avid reader she encouraged all her family to read and enjoy the pleasure of books. Jackie was also the family historian, track-ing family back over 400 years and documenting for all to know the heritage. Private family arrangements have been entrusted to the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel, with interment in Queensville Cemetery in the spring. Memorial donations to Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences at www.eatonfuneralhome.ca

Marion'sMusingsFour more weeks, Christmas will be over and then the END of 2020. It would be great if I could say that 2021 is going to be much better, but at the moment, it is a wait and see. Hopefully the vaccinations will soon be available. They say the older you get, the faster the time goes by. But 2020 has dragged on! Although there are days that I have to check for the date to discover that it is Thursday, not Tuesday, as I thought it was. And I do not think it is my age, but the days just go by and it is so easy to lose track. News of a vaccine is encouraging, but how soon is it go-ing to be available? I only hope that people who are think-ing this is all a hoax and refuse to wear a mask and social distance, will accept the vaccination . It is irritating when those who are doubting the severity of Covid, and think they are invincible, but do not think of those who have oth-er health problems that make them susceptible to the virus. We (Huron County Cruisers) were very pleased with the turn-out at our attempt to bring up spirits at this time of the year. There was a great array of floats and lights at our Drive Thru Christmas parade at the Community Centre. A sincere thank you to the arena staff who were so helpful with our plans. .A big thank you also to all who brought out displays and to the firemen who came out with the trucks to really light it up! Also, a big thank you to Penny Zurbrigg and Bonnie Whitehead who took many pictures, to Santa, who also visited the Nursing Home, He presented a little entertainment from outside, with the residents watching from the windows. Also to our videog-rapher, who will be putting together a DVD from the evening. Although Christmas is going to be very different this year, I wish everyone a very good holiday, and a new outlook for the New Year, from my family and I.
