Our whole school topic is ‘Creativity’ and all Levels are using this as a basis for teaching the Design, Creativity and Technology (DCT) aspects of the Victorian Curriculum. There are also lots of links being made to Literacy and Numeracy which makes the learning even more interesting for our students. The Level 1 students have the challenge to “Create a Fairy Tale and Bring it to Life”. They have the options of box construction, iPads, books and puppets f or the ‘bringing it to life’ aspect of the task. The ‘create’ aspect of the task is allowing the teachers to make fantastic links to all aspects of the Literacy curriculum. The Level 2 students are challenged to “Be Creative” and, like the Preps, are using the DCT curriculum to achieve this. They are working within their classrooms to contribute to a class chosen option; 1/2B are creating puppets, 1/2C are creating an art gallery with presentable art (this includes cooking as well as paintings), 1/2L are creating kites, 1/2M are creating a movie, 1/2S are creating an orchestra full of musical instruments and 1/2D are holding their all-important vote today! In Level 3, the challenge is to “Recreate to Make Something Better”. They are already in small teams made up of students across the Level, and ideas range from toasters with see through aspects so you can check on the toast, to new pieces of Lego. They are learning the more technical aspects of the DCT curriculum by having to plan their brief, justify their decisions, as well as produce either a model of their design or an actual finished piece. These requirements mean that they are using lots of cross-curricular links into Literacy and Numeracy. Up in Level 4 the challenge is to “Create a Digital Learning Resource”. The teachers have taught sessions on stop motion, movie making, coding and digital animation and given the students time to experiment on selected apps on their iPads. The students will work in groups from within their class and follow the design process, documenting each stage on their newly created sites. As with all Levels the teachers have been able to create strong links to other areas of the curriculum, with script writing a feature of the Literacy program this week. As you can see, this term at Kalinda is not only action packed but full of creative thinking. Why don’t you check in with your child/ren and find out what they are doing? 2015 Parent Payments & Book Packs Kalinda Primary School is introducing a new format this year for Parent Payments and Book Pack collections. We realise this may create some concern this year but we are looking to streamline procedures for the years to come. School Council has elected not to increase fees for 2015, however, it has been decided that Book Packs will only be provided to students once the compulsory component of the Parent Payment has been paid, or an Instalment Agreement has been arranged. Full details have been included in the Parent Payment covering letter, which has gone home today with the Parent Payment form. If you need to organise an Instalment Agreement, this can be done at the office, or if you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. MICHELLE OGILVIE ACTING PRINCIPAL

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT KALINDA THIS TERM? Whilst, as usual, there are lots of exciting things happening at Kalinda I thought that I would take this opportunity to write about our topic for Challenge Based learning this term.

They have the options of box construction, iPads, books and puppets for the ‘bringing it to life’ aspect of the task. The teachers are explicitly teaching, using the DCT curriculum, how each of these options can be used before the students make their choice/s.

Information for Parents Dear Parents, The McDonald’s Camp Quality Puppets have been invited to perform at your child’s school on

Wednesday 22nd

October It is an educational program using Muppet-style puppets to deliver a fun and positive message about supporting children living with cancer and other serious illnesses. There is no charge to the school or the children. The information shared aims to help children heighten their awareness of the need to care for and support others who may look, or be a little ‘different’, particularly because of physical problems, such as hair loss, because of cancer treatment. Children frequently ask very thoughtful questions. We are able to answer most questions to satisfy their ‘need to know’ and concerns that they may have. We do not have the authority to answer complicated medical questions. If they occur, we will refer the child to make enquiries of a medical practitioner. This program links well with Community Awareness and Personal Development in the school program, and is most certainly not limited to schools with ill children. The contents relate very much to our children’s contribution to a more caring society. Over 4,000,000 children have seen our puppets, and have been delighted as the characters come to life, relating very well, the information given to the children on their own level. Puppets have for many generations, been a fantastic communication tool. We trust that your children will benefit from the lessons they will learn through listening to our stories. If you need to know more detail of the program, please do not hesitate to call on 9329 8660 The performances will be follows: 10:15am - Levels 3 & 4 11:30am - Levels 1 & 2 These sessions will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room. CANTEEN NEWS It's great to see the Stickybeak lunch order bags in use. It makes packing the orders a lot easier because everything fits! We have limited colours available for sale if you would like to purchase one. Come and see me on a Tuesday morning or during school hours on a Wednesday / Thursday and Friday in the Canteen. Our Summer Menu has started and some families are still working off the Winter Menu. Can you please ensure that you are using the correct menu when placing your child's order. The Summer Menu is yellow and can also be downloaded from our website at www.kalinda.vic.edu.au (Forms & Notices). Some prices have had to be increased so it is important that you refer to the latest menu. A reminder to parents that if you can’t supply a LARGE paper bag, please remember to include an extra 10 cents and one will be supplied for you. JO O’CALLAGHAN CANTEEN MANAGER

HELP NEEDED Our yarn bombing is developing, but there’s still quite a bit to do. Our students and staff have been frantically knitting and crocheting squares for this project. If you can spare any time between 1pm and 3:30pm on Monday, October 20, please join me in adding to it. No prior sewing skills are required as it is a very simple activity. If you are free at any other times, and don't mind working solo, please contact me at school. BRUSHES I am collecting household paintbrushes for an upcoming activity. They can be new or used as they are not going to be used for painting. Please deliver to the Art Room. Thank you to the Whitaker family for regularly donating much needed and often-used newspapers. LIBBY SHAW VISUAL ARTS TEACHER

Coach Approach.

My favourite activities in order were: hip hop, AFL, basketball, circus and soccer. In hip hop we did little steps at a time, and then at the end, we put them all together. Football was our first activity, we did a game to warm up, then we had a competition. My team won by one point. By Noah P. - Grade 2.

apologies for any inconvenience caused.

COACH APPROACH SPORTS EXPO – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15: I hope that everyone

enjoyed yesterday’s Coach Approach Sports Expo!?! The children all appeared to have a

always make our experience so enjoyable

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Week 2 - Term 4 – 2014 (13 – 17 October)

Program Update

Hello everyone! Week two already. Last week was great and while we are still getting to know everyone we have had a really positive time so far with the children enjoying many activities and liking our changes to the program. We now have a great area to do quiet activities like puzzles, drawing, games, just sitting around talking and even doing homework. Our start to spring activities has been a little slow as our weather has not been the best, but we can continue over the coming weeks. Halloween is fast approaching so next week we will start some activities. Please feel free to pop in and have a look at what we are doing. Our suggestion tree is just at the door and we would love you to add your ideas. We are getting some great recipes for our children with allergies. Thank you very much - this is a fantastic help when planning menus. We look forward to a great term and getting to know both children and parents! Kind Regards, Jeanette Lea and Kalli Boag
