1 Newsletter No. 40 - Term 4Week 10 Thursday 11 th December 2014 From the Principal…………. GRADES AND TEACHERS 2015 Today your child’s report, grade list and room number will be given to your child, as well as the name of their teacher for 2015. Missing off the teacher list will be Michelle Ogilvie, Matt Anthony, Bec Davis, Tanya Italiano, Kyle Barnden and Paul Todd. We will certainly miss all these teachers; however, we have employed teachers who will complement our teams and who are very eager indeed to teach at Kalinda. At the last moment last week our enrolments in the Level 3 area grew and I decided to form a sixth grade, so again we had to advertise for another teacher. The Education Department insists we advertise for 2 weeks so the position will close Wednesday night. If your child is in that grade, you will know your child’s teacher next Friday. The full list of 2015 Kalinda Staff is on page 2. Christmas Carols What a great time we had at our Carols last night! The weather stayed fine, although a bit chilly, and the children were happy and animated as they sang, thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was terrific seeing so many grandparents and extended family there, as well as some of our new families of Foundation 2015 students. Thank you so much to Lexi Maurus, Kalinda Music teacher, for her organisation and leading our children in song. As well, I wish to thank our dynamic duo, Kyle Barnden and Paul Todd, for their beautiful dinner music. It is great to have such talented staff! Also a big Thank You to our sound specialist, the wonderful Chris Mann. We are very lucky to have such talent in our parent community.

FUN AT THE FAIRY TALE BALL

The Fairy Tale Ball was a sight to behold last Monday. Our Preps delighted in dressing up as their favourite fairy tale character, participating in themed activities for the day. Here are some of their thoughts: Fantastic! We had the best day ever! I love the lunch. My favourite food was my mum's home-made pirate sausage rolls. I liked the parade and the movie. I was a knight in shining armour. I fought a fire breathing dragon. Benjamin E. Prep T Oh, wow! Yesterday was fun! We at a feast and had a ball! I came as the Little Mermaid. I had lots of yummy food. Eleanor D. Prep T There was a brave person standing at the door. He was called Mario and he was six. He was brave. He ate all of the food. Seth L.B Prep T Wow! We had so much fun at the fairy tale ball! We had the best day ever! WE had sausage rolls and sweets for lunch. Oh, so much fun! Tayla W. Prep T Fantastic fun was had at the Fairy Tale Ball. I dressed as Elsa. We had a feast. I ate some fairy bread, a sausage roll, jelly and a cup cake. Gemma C. Prep T Fantastic fun was had at the Fairy Tale Ball. We had fun because we had lots of food. I love cupcakes. I dressed up as Anna. I love dancing to the music. We had a ball! April D. Prep T

And here are some of the fairy tales that the Preps have been creating themselves. Once upon a time there was a dragon named Jack. He had spikes on his body. He had green scales and he had some power fire. He had a furry coat. He lived in a forest with some lightning. The lightning happened when the dragon was flying and he could see the moon and the stars. It was an upside down forest. The problem was a knight came and stabbed the dragon and the dragon fell asleep. The dragon was asleep for 799 minutes. The goblin was very sad that the dragon was asleep. Then the goblin kissed the dragon and he woke up and they lived happily ever after. By Logan E. Prep M Once upon a time there was a Princess named Anna. She had hearts on her dress and the hearts on her dress were different colours. The hearts were red, blue, yellow, pink and purple. She was so beautiful. Anna had a sister Elsa. She lived in a pretty castle. The castle had hearts that were pink. The castle was colourful. The castle was also so beautiful. The castle had lollies on it. The castle had a moat around it. A tornado came and made the colours disappear. The tornado made the castle fall down. The princesses tried to make the castle colours come back but they couldn’t. A wizard came and said, “Do you need help fixing the castle?” “Yes, we also need help finding the colours.’” They helped the princess dig and they found the colours were there. Then she lived happily ever after. By Sienna S Prep M Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess with beautiful diamonds on her dress. Her dress was coloured in pink and it was shiny. She had a green crown. She had yellow, blonde hair. Her blonde hair was very beautiful. She had beautiful red lipstick. She lived in a black and purple and orange castle. She had flowers near the castle. There was love hearts on it. Then a wicked witch came and put a magical sleeping potion in her mouth. Then the prince came and kissed her. Then they lived happily ever after. By Lily A Prep M

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Throughout the last few weeks, Level 3 students have used fresh produce from our garden to make a variety of jams and chutneys, sausage rolls, frittata and mini quiches, which were all enjoyed by our volunteers at our afternoon tea. The final session of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program was a celebration to thank our wonderful volunteers, who have joined us in the kitchen and the garden. Your support throughout the Semester has been so very much appreciated. If you purchased some of the delicious jams or chutneys made by our grade 3/4 SAKG students. It would be very much appreciated if you could return the empty jars to the stadium kitchen or to reception so that we can continue to make things for you to buy and try! Many Thanks Level Three

Level 2 Creativity Expo! Wow! What a wonderfully creative afternoon the Level 2 students presented on Wednesday. Kites were flying, homemade movies were playing, puppets were acting, circuits were lit up, musical instruments were strumming, and an art gallery had a grand opening! Parents, Grandparents and other family members strolled around the rooms marvelling at the students’ work and listening to them explain their designs. The words teachers heard from our visitors included: “passionate”, “excited”, “proud”, “clever”, “imaginative” and “so creative!” Thank you to everyone who attended, the students were all of those things above and they were overjoyed to be able to share their ideas and projects with you. We all absolutely loved it. Level 2 Team

Level 3 EXPO On Monday afternoon, Level Three students proudly presented and discussed their creative design prototypes with their Expo audience. Questions such as "Can you tell me about the features and benefits of your design?" were asked and competently answered. We would like to thank everyone who came and our amazing, creative students. JUNIOR ATHLETICS EXPERIENCE: Thank you to everyone who assisted with last Friday’s ‘Junior Athletics Experience’. The

students all seemed to have a lot of fun, and I have had many students tell me aboiut their favourite event or events. From a

teaching and learning perspective, I was pleased to see most students really ‘engage’ with the intended learning of the day,

much of which is really quite subtle. Whilst the participation in the events themselves is of high importance, it is equally as

important that students learn what a ‘carnival’ event loks and feels like in preparation for future years. That requires students to

be able to: trust their group leader, wait their turn, behave safely and appropriately while not competing, and be a positive

spectator and supporter. The vast majority of students were able to demonstrate those abilities extremely well.

LEVEL 3 AND 4 BIKE-CONTROL COURSES: Thank-you also to the students and families of Level 3 and 4 for the fantastic

uptake of the recent Bike-Control lessons. The improvement demonstrated and enjoyment displayed at times throughout the

sessions was a joy to behold, and I hope that I have inspired lots of Kalinda students to dust off their bikes for hours of (safe and

controlled!) riding enjoyment over the upcoming summer holidays. Ask your child to show you how slowly they can ride! Sounds

like a strange thing to say, but it is an extremely diffuicult skill and some of the balance I witnessed was nothing short of

amazing! As our special guest (Kate Perry - one of Australia’s most promising, elite ‘up-and-coming’ road racing athletes) said

during the second Monday session; “I know LOTS of people who can ride fast, but not many who have the skill, control and

balance to ride slowly. Funny how it tends to be THOSE riders who can avoid crashes and still be in ‘it’ (the race) when it

matters most”. * Congratulations to Kate, who finished second overall in the women’s ‘Tour of Bright’ held last

weekend. Imagine riding UP Mount Hotham… FAST! Ouch!

WEET-BIX KIDS TRYATHLON 2015: Set amongst the giant palm trees of Catani Gardens, St Kilda is a

spectacular place for TRYathletes to start their day! TRYathletes begin with an open water swim in St Kilda

beach, ahead of riding around the specially designed Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon course in the Gardens!

TRYathletes finish at the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Village where friends and family will cheer them across the

finish line. Event day is Sunday 8 March 2015. Register now to be part of this World record-breaking Series.

Entries will close when field limits are reached.

SCIENCE SAYS: This week’s short, thought-provoking, animated video by ‘ASAP Science’ is “The Scientific

Power of Teamwork” See it here.

CENTREPAY DEDUCTIONS

(For families who receive a Centrelink Payment) Centrepay is a free, direct bill-paying service offered to customers receiving Centrelink payments. Through Centrepay you can choose to pay school fees by having a regular amount deducted from your payments and transferred electronically to Kalinda Primary School. There is no charge for using this service. There is a minimum payment amount for deductions to Kalinda Primary School of $20.00 per fortnight. You can apply for Centrepay deductions by completing the Centrepay deduction form at Kalinda Primary School. You will need:

your Customer Reference Number (CRN)

the amount you want deducted from your payments each fortnight

the payments from which you want the deductions to be paid

the payday that you want the deduction to start. Centrelink will send you a letter confirming the details of your deductions. Centrelink will pay your deductions to Kalinda Primary School on the same day you receive your Centrelink payments. You can change, suspend or cancel your deductions at any time:

online at humanservices.gov.au/onlineservices,

by calling Centrelink

completing a Centrepay deduction form at a Centrelink Service Centre. Centrelink will send you a letter and also advise Kalinda Primary School of your changes, suspensions or cancellation. You can make the following changes to your deductions:

suspend your deduction amount temporarily for a maximum period of 13 weeks

request a future end date when deductions will automatically cease

nominate or change a target amount so deductions will automatically stop when that target amount has been reached

change the deduction amount you are paying to a new amount or change the amount temporarily

cancel your deduction at any time. You may not always be able to deduct the full amount requested if your Centrelink payment:

is reduced because of income or earnings

has been reduced or suspended because of a non-payment period, or

is reduced because other deductions have been made, such as overpayments—leaving you with an insufficient amount left for your Centrepay deduction.

If this happens you will need to contact the Business Manager at Kalinda Primary School on 9876 3289 to make other arrangements.
