#WhatDoesFreedomMean?Extending the 2014 Black Solidarity Day
Theme Across City Tech!
Fall 2014!
Black Solidarity Day• Black Solidarity Day was first observed in 1969 on the
campus of Brooklyn College, when several students and activists were inspired by Douglas Turner Ward’s controversial play entitled A Day of Absence.!
• Traditionally, this is a day in which people of African descent (and supporters) throughout the country abstain from participation in the social, political and economic affairs of the nation. !
• With this peaceful absence, African Americans and others passively oppose racism, as well as social and civil injustices, on a global level.!

Extending the 2014 BSD Theme Across the Schools1. The General Education Committee is investigating ways to
develop awareness of commonalities across disciplines!
2. A subcommittee was formed to test a common theme and formulating assignments for classes from each school!
3. Dr. Marta Effinger-Crichlow invited the subcommittee to apply the theme for this year’s Black Solidarity Day for this initial trial!
4. The subcommittee members created assignments for their classes and some of the resulting work is seen here.!

I believe it's so important and I am very grateful for our ancestors, countrymen and women who have and still are sacrificing, bleeding and dying for it Freedom is truly a way
of life for what is right and wrong. !We must remember just because a paper says we have
freedom doesn't mean we soulfully do. !Or the people who gives us our rights want us to. We must take control and demand respect our right of choice. It's our voice to be heard, and our path to thrive in America. !

What Does Freedom Mean?
What Does Freedom Mean?
Freedom is just being free.!
I can let go and just be me!
I can do anything if l try,!
Without anyone asking why?!
I can say I am a bird and fly, That's all I'm going to say just don't ask why!
Having freedom is power and something you can't take for granted.!
So cherish each moment, because the one thing that was always there may be gone when you
least expect it. !
AFR 1503
What Does Freedom Mean? When I think of freedom I think "no boundaries". Freedom
means I can say what I want, do what I want and think what I want without any limits (as long as I am not harming myself or others). If l have freedom, I can walk down the street wearing a bikini (if I wanted to) or verbally insult a police officer without
being arrested. If l'm free, I can live life without feeling restricted and I can truly be happy. My definition of freedom allows me to see that currently, I don't really have freedom.!

What Does Freedom Mean?
The question you need to ask yourself is are you really free? At times we may feel free but are we actually? I
say we are only free to an extent, there is only so far we can take our freedom. We have a freedom to express
ourselves and speak our minds but if taken too far then we can be punished for doing so. Your freedom will
always be limited because your freedom cannot override another… Freedom is what we wish we can
have whenever we want or need it but sadly it’s something we won't be able to fully achieve.!
AFR 1503
ENG 1101
When will these shackles come off me?When will I be able to run freely? You will never be free until you free yourself from the prison of your own false thoughtsSociety will strip you of your individuality, freedom, happiness, and genius at any costThey brainwash your parents into thinking they're your boss; when they themselves are being controlled and left at a loss !
Prevailing Over Adversity
ENG 1101
When you're focused on yourself and not what others do
Once you've done it your free from ridicule by society, family, and friends
Only then can you realize what freedom means to you and truly live life as a FREE YOU!
Prevailing Over Adversity
Freedom cannot be quantified, classified or defined.
We take freedom to mean the ability to pursue one's own happiness. There are no guarantees that we will enjoy the freedoms of the past but we will enjoy the
freedoms we create and enforce.!

FreedomEven in through democracy, the government still keeps
us controlled, which does not differ from any other government. For example, we have the right to vote, but a politician is picked by the Electoral College, so what is the need to vote. Plus, when George W. Bush Jr. did not
win the election with Al Gore he still became our president for eight years. So, democracy is for the
people by the people Bush would have not been our president. Basically, freedom is not really realistic
because it is limited and only works for certain things. !

“As dentists and dental technicians you’re creating a new life to some people. Whether its cosmetics
and making them esthetically happy or basic functions such as eating normal again. We’re allowing the patient social freedom again and
letting them live their lives the way they want to with their new set of teeth.”

“As a human being, I don’t want to leave this life without making a mark. It is only fitting that my
journey of regaining my smile will continue on until I have done the same for others. It is poetic and it fits me well. That is the “freedom” for me and I hope it
lasts forever.”
RESD 1110
DEN 2311
In a normal setting freedom would mean having the right to speak or think without
restraint, but in a clinical or dental lab setting freedom could be described differently by a
patient, dentist or technician.!
RESD 1110
Freedom is the ability for an individual to desire how they want their rights expressed or demonstrated, and it can be done without nobody restraining them physically or verbally. In
regards to dental laboratory, freedom can mean a patient can desire how exactly they desire any kind of cosmetic
adjustments to their teeth according to the dental laboratory technician. For a dental laboratory technician, they have the
freedom to decide and suggest how treatments shall be done depending on an underlying condition. It also applies to when
they are to perform any kind of cosmetic adjustments. !

Freedom to travel is to live without inhibitions. There comes a moment where the desire to see more than your box becomes overwhelming and you cut the strings holding you back. It is not easy, since long distance travel is not always accessible to all. !
The freedom of travel for some may shed light on the challenges in other areas, thus creating change. !
Freedom of Travel Means Dropping The Ego !And Traveling As An Eco-tourist.!
!
HMGT 4983
What does freedom to travel mean to me? !
• Going outside your comfort zone and exposing yourself to new places, people and traditions.!
• Exploring the world freely and understanding how all the pieces in it fit together. !
• Being able to follow one’s curiosity to continually learn and question. !
• Traveling responsibly, conserving natural resources, supporting local cultures, and making a positive impact on the places we visit.!
HMGT 4983
To me, freedom to travel means that there aren’t any restrictions preventing me from leaving one place and going to another, provided that it doesn’t cause harm to anyone else in the process. It is the freedom to explore and absorb all that is around me wherever I go while being aware of sustainability and preserving the environment.!
HMGT 4983
Freedom to travel means that we are blessed with the opportunity to explore the wonders of the world. It also means
that we have a responsibility to be considerate and respectful of the land
and it’s resources.!

Freedom in the digital age is the freedom to access what you want when you want and without restriction and know what information is safe when you send it. Freedom is not going to be achieved if the
ultimatum is unlimited access and complete anonymity. There must be a compromise made to keep the content providers with an
income but to protect the end users. That compromise is for the providers to provide where the information goes and how it is stored
and the user to decide if that information is acceptable.!
