Over 25 years ago I began to plan a way forward to create a multi-disciplinary community arts centre in the heart of our Walled City. Through the generosity of Joe Mulheron and John Coyle, I found the old Sisters of Mercy convent Schools on Artillery Street. And so The Playhouse was born and we began to make play and plays!
The Playhouse continually tries hard to live up to our vision to serve the people and communities of this City and beyond. We’re always aware of the need to keep our fingers on the pulse of our communities of interest and geography- culturally, socially, politically and economically. We are of this very special place and what happens here happens to us.
Our mission and vision hasn’t changed one iota. Our mission then and now is to create a meaningful inclusive community arts service. Art for All, Art the Many not the Few. Art not as a luxury for the rich but a necessity for everyone.
My sincere and heartfelt thanks for the support, wisdom and guidance of everyone who made this vision possible, all our audiences, funders, partners and especially our great team of co-workers, and Board of Management, past and present.
Little did architect Edward Toye know, over 100 years ago, he designed not just a Primary School for the Sisters of Mercy, but a Playhouse, a big house for play, plays and creativity.
Pauline Ross - Playhouse founder and Director

by Simon Stone after Federico García Lorca
The incredible Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress award-winning role. A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone’s radical production of Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics call it ‘an extraordinary
theatrical triumph’ (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable’ (Mail on Sunday). Billie Piper’s lead performance is described as ‘spell-binding’ (The Evening Standard), and ‘devastat-ingly powerful’ (The Daily Telegraph).
Set in contemporary London, Piper’s portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a shocking climax.

From the creators of The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe, Christmas Gothic, Dalloway, Female Gothic and Austen’s Women.
In this new age of uncertainty, where the shadows of tyranny, intolerance and war darken the narrative of human progress, how much time do we have left? If civilisation fell today, what would become of us?
In producer Rebecca Vaughan and writer/director Elton Townend Jones’ new and radical interpretation of the HG Wells classic, a Victorian explorer travels across the ages into tomorrow and beyond: from the fall of man to the end of the world, discovering the fate of our endeavours and uncovering our darkest fears.
Setting the Darwinist politics of the original novella in sharp relief against our own experience of Western decline in the early 21st century, The Time Machine is a philosophical journey, a nightmare adventure, a cautionary tale – and the story of us all.
Can we change the future? Or has the end of the world already begun?

“They partitioned Ireland in 1921 didn’t they? Well I’m partitioning this flat in 1976!”
Fate and a couple of failed marriages have crashed two men together under the same roof in the Rossville Flats in the midst of The Troubles - in what can only be described as the mismatch of the century.
Inspired by Neil Simon’s classic script ‘The Odd Couple’, this brand new laugh out loud comedy follows Oscar Meenan and Felix Young– both “Bogside men” - one a Catholic and one a Protestant; one is an easy-going slob and one an obsessive perfectionist preoccupied with neatness.
Join them in the Bogside in 1976 to find out if true friendship can overcome all in this riotous study in bitter-sweet disharmony.
