1 WHAT’S NEW? Pool Closed on September 28; Fall Events Planned It’s been a wonderful summer, but the calendar reminds us that Fall has definitely arrived. With cooler days and nights coming with greater frequency, the pool is closed until next Spring when warmer weather returns. Heating the pool is an expensive undertaking — and even more so as the weather turns cooler, so this is also a cost-savings. But the pool closing does not mark the end of our social activities for the year! Plan to attend our first Fall Cocktail Party, scheduled for October 10, the second Friday of the month, at 7 p.m. Come to welcome new or “away for the summer” neighbors and recall the joys of warmer months. And be sure to bring your favorite beverage and an appetizer or dessert to share. And it’s not too soon to be planning additional Fall and Winter events. e newly formed Social Activities Committee first met on Wednesday, September 17 to discuss and plan for future community events. Mark your calendars now for November 7, the month’s first Friday, for the First Annual Chili Cookin’ Contest! To get your chili the recognition it has October 2014 always deserved, register with one of the Committee mem- bers, Rich Sorrentino, Paula Daley, or Luci Goldberg (see Montgomery Walk Contact list on page 6). Wine Club Planning Begins October 7During the first meeting of the Montgomery Walk Wine Club, scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 7,

attendees will determine how the club will work. “My goal,” says Mike Lyons, who hopes to get the local club started, “is based on how a similar

club works at another community. It is a little educational — and a lot social.”

In that community, he explains, a few members select a variety of wine for tast-

ing at the monthly meeting. They research it and then bring to the meeting several

bottles of that wine type in different price ranges. After pro-viding some basic information about the wine (which could take a few minutes — or even 10 to 15 minutes), members sample and discuss the wines. The presenters also recommend some finger-foods to complement the wine (or vice versa), which other attendees bring.

“In discussions I’ve had with other neighbors, wine clubs can work in different ways,” Mike adds, “so maybe we will experiment a little as time goes on.”

Mike says his goal is to learn more about wine, and he welcomes both novices and knowledgeable wine drinkers to the meeting. “Others may have a lot of experience and provide other suggestions.” For more information or to discuss your ideas, contact Mike ([email protected]) or attend the meeting.

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

Recently, the Montgomery Walk Executive Board asked mem-bers of our community to step up to become Courtyard Cap-tains. We believe this arrangement will help make our tran-sition period proceed more smoothly. Unfortunately, to date, residents from only three courts and both groups of Terrace homes have volunteered to serve in this position. Our thanks go to this first group of volunteer captains: Harvey Sokoloff (Eisenhower Drive), Marilyn Phillips (G), Joe Giuffre (I), Stanley and Linda Morganstein (J), and Pat Goodwin (Lincoln Drive). Montgomery Walk has 10 ad-ditional courts, so we need 10 more court captains. Please consider doing your part to help your community - and your neighbors!

Beginning on September 30, David Craven, our Community manager from Danella Management, will be available at the Club House every Tuesday from 12:00 until about 2:00 p.m. to meet with vendors and residents. If you would like to meet Dave or dis-cuss community issues with him, you are welcome to stop by.

The Board has finally received our community’s capital reserve balance from The David Cutler Group and recently deposited $215,833.66 into a Montgomery Walk bank ac-count. This money may be used only for capital improvements to our property and will continue to grow, as 10 percent of your monthly fee goes into this account. In addition, the ini-tial $1,500 that all Montgomery Walk homeowners pay upon purchasing their homes is added to this account. We also now have in our possession other community historical informa-tion such as subdivision plans, copies of paid invoices, vendor information, our corporate books, bank statements, copies of contracts, federal tax returns, etc.

And if you wonder where the remainder of your association dues goes, here are two bits of recent financial information:

■ Last month’s water bill was $2,300.

■ The spring mulching of our landscape areas cost $27,000.

In the area of Community improvements, the Board is researching the possibility of installing canvas pull-down walls for the patio area of the pool — along with two heaters. These additions would provide us with the additional space needed for social functions. When pricing is available, we will present this information to homeowners for consideration.

In the Board’s work with vendor issues, I have scheduled a meeting with Total Turf to discuss replacement, at their cost, of all damaged downspouts. In addition, we are meeting with service providers to discuss erosion problems associated with Bilco (bulkhead) doors. This is a serious issue which needs to be addressed - and the sooner the better. The Cutler Group is ultimately responsible for fixing this problem before the official turnover, but getting the job done now, before the problem or weather worsens, should be more cost efficient.

Representatives from our Board attended a Montgomery Township Board of Supervisor’s “open to the public” meeting on September 29 to learn more about the process of discussing our concerns with the township. We believe it is important for us to meet township officials and, thereby, determine how to seek help in dealing with possible future issues or problems.

In addition, I invited the president of Montgomery Point Homeowner’s Association, the Pulte development just south-east of Montgomery Walk, to attend the township meeting with us and join us at our next Homeowner’s Association meeting. Our getting to know each other and working togeth-er will give us a voice of about 500 concerned residents when important issues arise. We have also learned that this arrange-ment might well become our best chance to discuss concerns we have about local quarry operations, such as blasts and dust.

We are pleased that we now have a Social Activities Com-mittee, which is co-chaired by Paula Daley, Luci Gold-berg, and Rich Sorrentino. This group planned and exe-cuted the highly successful Island Party in September and will be organizing all social events for the remainder of this and the coming year. Stay tuned, because the best is yet to come! Please note, however, that we still need resident volunteers to participate in our Clubhouse and Landscape/Architectural committees.

To end on another positive note, I want to report that one of our neighbors, who wishes to remain anonymous, has do-nated $330 to our event fund in appreciation of the planning and execution of our social events. For all of us, I say: We thank you for your generosity and hope you continue to enjoy your neighbors and activities at Montgomery Walk!

Overall, I am pleased with the progress we are making.

UPDATEBook Club Discusses Winter Garden, Will Read Pearl Buck’s Last Novel All 13 members attending the September meeting of the Montgomery Walk Book Club seemed to enjoy the selected book, Winter Garden. “Kristen Hannah is a wonderful story-teller who breathes life into each of the characters,” comments one of the group leaders, Luci Goldberg. At the meeting, in depth discussions dwelt on the book’s major themes, including sibling and mother-daughter relationships and the psycho-logical effects of surviving war, which were further enriched by members who shared similar personal experiences. The meeting was enhanced, too, by those who brought beverages and food related to the story setting and season.

The book selected for the October Book Club discussion, The Eternal Wonder, was published some 40 years after the author’s death. Pearl S. Buck’s son, Edgar Walsh, learned about the discovery, in a Texas warehouse, of her unpublished man-uscript, which he acquired and then approved for publication last year. The Book Club plans to visit the author’s home in Bucks County sometime after the discussion at the meeting on October 16.

Luci reminds residents that new Book Club members are always welcome. Contact her or Marlene Harrison (See Contact listing, p.6.) for more information — or to have your name added to the e-mail list.

Ladies’ Night Out Planned for October 14

Ladies, here’s your excuse for planning a night out with the girls! The Social Activities Committee has planned a Ladies’ Night Out for Tuesday evening, October 14 at 6:30 p.m., to be held at the West Avenue Grille at 1650 Limekiln Pike in Dresher, a restaurant owned and operated by our neighbors Bob and Hope Katz. Making arrangements is Geri Axler ([email protected]), so contact her by October 7 if you plan to attend. Attendees will order from the restaurant’s regular menu and receive an individual bill. And remember to bring your favorite beverage!

Ask Monty

Q I am thinking about running for the Montgomery Walk Executive Board in the May election. Are board members paid?

A Members of our Executive Board volunteer to run for office in an annual election. When elected, they serve an unpaid two-year term. As a matter of fact,

the Condominium Association By-laws specifically state that Board Members cannot be paid.

Update

Have you noticed ….. ■ The damaged telephone poles

downed during an accident at the Hartman Road quarry on June 30, have finally been removed.

■ The sidewalk along Hartman Road between Montgomery Walk and Mont-gomery Oaks has now been complet-ed, giving walkers and bike riders a continuous and safer path. We send thanks to our neighbor Yoram Kenig, who originally petitioned the township in October 2013 to take necessary steps to extend the sidewalk across the PECO-owned property.

■ One of our newest neighbors, Linda Morganstein, has a method for elim-inating some of the brown patches on our lawns. When walking with her Golden Doodle Shana, she carries a pint bottle of water which she pours over and dilutes the acidity of dog urine. Thank you, Linda!

More Than 100 Attend Island PartyAnd what a party it was! The Island Party held on the evening of September 5 featured island food (wonderfully prepared and presented by Pumpernick’s and our neighbor Paul Klein), island drinks (thank you Larry Hill, Alan Katz and Ruth Marcus), island music and entertainment (featuring the inimitables: Nate Jones and Rich Sorrentino), hula and limbo contests, a group sing-a-long and party dancing, all in a setting of fabulous island decorations and fantastic lighting.

We thank the Court G committee (Rich Sorrentino, Kathy Chorney, Paula Daley, Karen Lyons and Deb-bie Greenawalt) for the wonderful planning and execution of this amazing event. Thanks, too, to those neighbors who helped with setting up before and others with cleaning up after the event.

What a team! But what’s coming next, Guys? We can’t wait!

Karen’s List

The following is a partial listing of contractors who have com-pleted work for Montgomery Walk residents and have been suggested as possible sources of services. Residents must take responsibility to determine a contractor’s suitability for their particular needs. Neither Montgomery Walk residents nor the

Montgomery Walk Condominium Association make any specific recommendations. Do ask for referrals.

This list has been compiled by Karen McPoyle, who will continue to take your contractor suggestions.
