What’s going on…...
This month we have a 32 page edition of the newsletter as the Parish Council launch their Love Your Parish Week. Janet, our Parish Clerk, is working hard to ensure a successful week with plenty going on. You can see all the details available at the time of printing from the Parish Council on pages 15 to 17.
Janet has had a good response from villagers wishing to be added to her email circulation list. If you haven’t yet added yours its easy to do so, see page 14 and you will be kept right up to date with news, views and important information. You can also use the Parish website or the newly launched Parish Facebook Page.
In this edition we have lost our Beat News page as it seems that the post of Community Beat Sergeant, North Hykeham area, has been removed; to date no crime figures have been received. Hopefully this will resolve itself. On the plus side a page of newsy items and forthcoming events from the Whisby Natural World Centre has been added: what a great facility that is to have on our doorstep.
Club Members have been working hard on the bowling green as the start of the inter club matches is now just around the corner. The green will be open on Sunday 17th April if you’re thinking of joining and would like to give it a try. Members will be present to assist, so do come along.
THREDS are planning a St Georges Day village party, look out for the details on page 7 and a new Craft Club is being launched this month; more details can be seen on Page 28 alongside details of the Playgroups Quiz Night.
We’ve certainly plenty going on in the village now! You can even join a Fly Fishing group or perhaps you will become a Lepidopterist when you’ve read the excellent article from Laurie Poole on page 11.

On Saturday 23rd April, St Georges Day, the village will be Celebrating the Queens 90th Birthday in the Oliver Roper Centre, 7pm to 11pm. Music from “Over the Hill”, plus special guests, comedy and magic from the Chairman, a right royal quiz from Jane, our hard working Secretary and there’s always a few surprises thrown in! Please bring your own drink and some food for the buffet table. Tickets only as we’re limited to 60 people, price £2. Should be fun! Oh and by the way, just for Ron, Fancy Dress is optional…
THREDS Book Club
Our most recent meeting, kindly held at the home of Chris and Ruth Abrahams, was a great success. (Our treats for the evening including flying saucer sweets and packed freeze dried food used by astronauts, on this occasion several versions of ice cream!) The book in discussion was ‘An Astronaut’s guide to life on earth’ written by Chris Hadfield a now retired Canadian astronaut. It was the first meeting where everyone has actually finished the book and all agreed that it was an excellent read. Although at times fascinating with regard to learning about life in space and enlightening with regard to lessons we could use on earth, it was also agreed that we all struggled to warm to Mr Hadfield himself. No one however could argue that the man has achieved many things, from becoming an astronaut (no easy feat as he points out) to a You Tube sensation; the man had much he could share with his readers. Verdict: A book to read. Jane Taylor

Lepidoptery! Well…...Butterflies and Moths to you and me!
About six years ago I joined the Lincoln Branch of Butterfly Conservation. Our branch was formed in 1984 and has grown steadily since then, we have a current membership of over 350. Well over 100 people contribute regularly to the 'Sightings' page on our website, with accounts, stories and photographs, and our Twitter Account has over 500 'Followers'. Why not take a look (details below).
A total number of 40 of the UK’s 59 butterflies are to be found in Lincolnshire and some 700 of the UK’s 2,500 moths! Which is why the study of moths is both absorbing and interesting, even though we get a bit of a bad press from time to time.
Butterflies fly by day, have quite thin bodies and have club-like ends to their antennae. Moths are mostly night flyers (although there are notable day-flyers), they have thicker bodies, particularly for energy storage as many moths do not feed and no moth has club-ended antennae. Most male moths have feathered antennae to detect female pheromones. A mystery is why so many moths have intense colours not seen in the dark! Camouflage during the day? Only a partial reason.
It is true that many moths are pests e.g. Clothes Moth, Tomato Moth, and many which attack roots of plants and vegetables. On the other hand, gardeners do not welcome the Large White butterfly either; it’s not called Pieris brassicae for nothing!
I have seen 51 of our British butterflies and using a powerful mercury vapour light have attracted over 350 moth species into our small back garden! Agreed, some are LBJ’s (Little Brown Jobs) but many are most beautifully patterned and the big Hawkmoths are something to be marvelled at in terms of shape, size and colour.

Loose Threds—The Village Walking Group Walk 7- Thursday 11th February
Fourteen Loose THREDS met at the Whisby Nature Park Visitor Centre on a bright, sunny, but cold day to walk more of the area over the new bridge. The railway line forms the parish boundary here so the majority of our ramble was in the Doddington and Whisby Civil Parish. The intention was to explore some new routes but the leader was involved in deep conversation and managed to miss the important left turn which would have taken us off the way-marked paths. (For another day perhaps.) We crossed back over the bridge with time to walk by the railway line almost to the extreme north easterly point of the parish where the A46 crosses over. The railway embankment adjacent to this path is surprisingly designated as a Local Wildlife Site. From here we made our way to the kissing gate near ‘the Tunnels’ and on to the Railway for lunch. Although the restaurant was not yet fully operational, Carly put on an extensive menu and we all ate heartily. Some even managed pudding. As always, the beer was excellent.
Walk 8 - Thursday 22nd March This was our best attended walk to date and once again, the weather was perfect for walking. Twenty Loose THREDS set off from Whisby Nature Park and drove to the Church of St George the Martyr at North Clifton, Nottinghamshire. Yes, we crossed the border! We walked to the Trent Valley Way, joining the river opposite the old High Marnham Power Station site where the 5 cooling towers were demolished in July 2012. (Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9JiQCTOqB4 to see it happen). We turned north to walk under the magnificent old railway viaduct near Fledborough which was opened in 1897. We continued along the Trent Valley Way passing a significant meander in the river before turning uphill to return on a higher level path, enjoying views over the river and surrounding countryside. We drove back to Thorpe where eighteen of us went to the Railway for lunch and, I know I keep repeating myself, but the food, hospitality and company were excellent. Future Walks As part of the ‘Love Your Parish’ events in May, we are planning two walks which will involve ‘Beating the Bounds’ and walking through some of the incredibly rich and bio diverse environment in which we live. We expect the first walk to be on the afternoon of Sunday 8th May, probably starting at 3.00 pm and, for those who want to, ending up at the Railway for a drink. The second is likely to be on the morning of Thursday, 12th May, probably starting at 10.30 and, if you choose to, ending up at the Railway for lunch………….Tony and Caroline Magri

27th Lincoln Scout Group – Thorpe on the Hill
2016 is a big year for Scouting – Cubs are 100 years old and Beavers are 30 so there are lots of celebratory activities planned locally and nationally … there has never been a better time to join us!
We’ve got lots of group activities to keep us all busy each week. As part of our exciting programme following astronaut Tim Peake, 27
th Lincoln Scout
Group were selected to take part in experiments with the intergalactic Rocket seeds. We will soon be receiving our Rocket seeds that have been to the International Space Station, experiencing the stresses of microgravity. All sections will be growing seeds and recording the results into a national database for examination by the UK Space Agency scientists to see if there is a difference between the samples. Members of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will be growing the seeds and recording the size and appearance of the plants on a huge national database. It’s too early to predict the result, but this ground-breaking research has the potential to be literally ... out of this world. We’re also clocking up the miles hiking the 250 miles between the International Space Station and Earth and filling in our own Principia Space Diaries written by Lucy and Professor Stephen Hawking. Its all very exciting. As well as our weekly meetings our upcoming activities include a picnic at the castle, scavenger hunts, Space to Earth marathon relay, water fun day, photo exhibitions, special St Georges Day Parade, camping, campfires, hiking, cin-ema trips and later in the year a National Promise Party, adventure days and chiller camp for the older sections – WOW!!
Can you help us make a totem pole?
Back in 1916 cub groups had a totem pole with a wolf’s head on top. All the cub members would write their names on special ribbons and tie them on the pole. We are looking for someone who can help us make and commission a special 4 ft. wooden totem pole for the group …. to perhaps last another 100 years! If you know anyone who may be able to help us with this or would like to make enquiries about any of our sections, please contact group scout leader Fran Firth on 07952 480708 or [email protected].
All meetings are held at the Oliver Roper Centre, Thorpe on the Hill.
Beavers (6-8 years) – Thursdays 5:45 to 7:15 Cubs (8-10 years) – Tuesday 6:30 to 8pm
Scouts (10-14 years) – Thursday 7:30 to 9pm We are also keen to hear from you if you are over 14 and want to join the Scout Network or over 18 and would like to volunteer (as little or as much as you would like) or present to the group. Many Thanks. Ellie Janisch

Whisby Natural World Centre Thorpe on the Hill
The Natural World Centre in Whisby Nature Park is our local Nature Park
owned and managed by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. This is a voluntary
charitable organisation which cares for Lincolnshire wildlife and
countryside, it was founded in 1948 and covers the whole of our historic
county - from the Humber to the Wash.
Faye Coulson, NK Tourism and Marketing writes………..
Investment continues at the Natural World Centre, supported by NK
District Council, with the aim to provide an enhanced customer
experience for all. A new indoor play area inspired by the success of
Little Darters Adventure Play Area is to be installed in the ground floor
exhibition space and will provide an all-weather experience and
educational resource for younger visitors. Work on ‘Otters Reach Indoor
Adventure’ is now underway and is due to be completed during the
Easter Holidays. Designed by Flights of Fantasy, the play area will
reflect the aspects of the Nature Park and will offer interactive play;
engaging and educating children about the natural environment.
The Adventure Area will also have a new café and will offer hot and cold
drinks and snacks to enable visitors to extend their stay. Otters Café will
be open daily from 11am to 3pm and is due to open alongside Otters
Reach Indoor Adventure.
Outdoors, Little Darters Adventure Area will soon feature an assault
course with balance ropes and a new lookout tower. These develop-
ments have been made possible by using money collected by car
parking fees and will look to enhance the site and the physical activity for
visitors. The new edge design will feature a mini assault course, with
ramp and rope ascent, balance rope traverse and climbing net. Little
Darters Bird Hide will also be relocated and a new octagonal tower will
be installed near to the Cave to provide a lookout over the island. Work
will commence in March and is due to be completed in June. Please note
that the Cave and Island are closed until further notice to make way for
improvements to the adventure area. The ‘Our Changing World Exhibi-
tion’ in the downstairs exhibition area is now also closed until further no-
tice. Please contact the centre on 01522 688868 for further information.

St Michaels Church of England Primary School
As we head towards Easter it has been a very exciting term at St Michaels. Mrs Weaver has returned from maternity leave and we embarked upon a Science week.
Prior to half term the whole school worked on a humanities week. Here we found out lots of facts about the village and Lincoln. Each class had a visit to different places in the local area. The Reception and Year 1 class visited Newark Aviation Museum, Years 2 and 3 went to the Lincolnshire Life museum whilst the older children all had fun at RAF Scampton.
Our Science week (week commencing 14th March) coincided
with British Science week and we had a focus on animals and in particular bats. During the week the book fayre arrived in school and to mark this we encouraged all the children (and teachers) to come to school dressed as an animal from a book.
As part of Easter week (week commencing 21th March) we held a community coffee morning. This was on Tuesday 22
nd March
and gave everyone an opportunity to come in and see our gallery of decorated eggs as well as examples of work from each class.
As you may gather school is a very busy place to be. This will continue after Easter as we begin to think about residential visits, sports day and SATS for the Year 2 and 6 children!
We are always looking for people to come into school and sup-
port the children with reading. If you have any spare time and
would like to help out we would be more than happy to welcome
you into school.
