This week’s Maori phrase:

Tino pai (Very good/ Very well done.)

A message from the JPC

Group By Soo Jung Jin Students Against Dangerous Driving at JPC aim to raise awareness amongst young people about the dangers of unsafe driving. Road death is the second most common cause of death for young New Zealanders and every year on average about 110 young people (aged 17-24) die on NZ roads in crashes caused by dangerous driving. The most dangerous time for young drivers is the initial six months after they get their restricted licence and teenagers are 18% more likely to be involved in serious road accidents.

Learning to drive and getting our license is a very exciting time; we finally get to start driving, we can go anywhere and gain some independence. However, a text message, an argument, distractions from passengers, fatigue, substance use or just a single alcoholic drink are all potential causes of accidents. As teenagers, we may think that we've heard this over a thousand times and that ‘it won’t happen to me’, but think…………. Why are so many young people dying on our roads?

The SADD message is, that we as young drivers can and should make the right decisions to protect ourselves, but others too. We want to encourage all young drivers here at JPC to think carefully about the choices they make before they get into a car to drive or as a passenger. We want to change the ideology from, ‘it won’t happen to me’ to ‘that could be me?’ For more information about SADD or if you are interested in joining the JPC SADD group visit https://sadd.org.nz/ or come and chat to Mrs Fraser.

FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING We’re running our third annual WiE CAN – Women in Engineering Residential Programme! Featuring hands-on sessions, inspiring presentations, and fun social activities, this is the perfect opportunity for Year 12 female students to explore the limitless opportunities offered in engineering. With over 40% of our 2019 WiE CAN attendees now pursuing Engineering at UC, we’re so excited to bring WiE CAN to a new cohort of future female engineers. Applications are now open and close Friday 4th September. Spaces limited to 60 students.

About WiE CAN Date: 17-21 January 2021 Location: UC College of Engineering, Christchurch Eligibility: Open to female students (including those who identify as female) completing Year 12 in 2020 at a New Zealand high school. Cost: $575 – includes accommodation, food and activities during the week. Scholarships & Sponsorship opportunities available. The five-day, all-expenses-paid residential programmes give students the opportunity to learn about nanoscience through lectures and lab experience with MacDiarmid Institute investigators. Designed for Māori and Pasifika students in their final years of high school, MacDiarmid Institute DiscoveryCamp - Te Tohu Huraina - is an annual programme, now in its tenth year, where students from all around the country gather to do real research with the country's leading scientists from the MacDiarmid Institute. The programme's aim is to enhance the students' science knowledge, inspire a love of discovery and help them carve out a career in science. Each summer we also offer four DiscoveryCamp alumni the opportunity to gain further hands-on experience and knowledge in our MacDiarmid Institute labs. Applications for DiscoveryCamp and NanoCamp 2021 will open on 24th July 2020. Further details are available at the following pages: https://www.macdiarmid.ac.nz/news-and-events/events/discoverycamp-2021/

THE ROTARY NATIONAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FORUM

This Forum is a programme aimed at high achieving, well-rounded science, maths and technology students in Year 12 at New Zealand Secondary Schools who will be returning to Year 13 and who are planning to study science or technology subjects at tertiary level in New Zealand.

Applications are now being sought from high achieving Year 12 Science, Mathematics and Technology Students for the forum to be held in Auckland from 10 – 23 January 2021.

The Forum Fee of $1895 includes the cost of accommodation, tuition, some fun activities and transport in Auckland. Travel to and from Auckland for students living more than 150km from the Forum venue will also be met by the Forum organisation. It is usual for the sponsoring Rotary Club and/or schools to assist with paying part of the Forum Fee. The balance is required to be paid by the successful applicant. The amount that each student is to pay will be determined by their nominating Rotary Club. The payment arrangement between the nominating Rotary Club and successful applicants who have been nominated will be discussed, agreed, recorded and confirmed at the interview with the nominating Rotary Club to avoid any confusion. Please see Ms Ludäscher for more information and an application form. Ms Conny Ludascher HOF Science E: [email protected]

The season officially started last weekend and the U14’s and U16’s both played Friday afternoon away at RBHS and Aquinas/TWOM respectively. The U14’s had a convincing win 60 – 0 however the U16’s did not do so well coming away with the loss.

The 1st XV travelled to the newly combined team of Aquinas/TWOM. This is always a difficult task and it seems that JPC travels away to the same teams every year. The newly combined team should be strong as they were both final contenders last season. Aquinas/TWOM were more passionate than the JPC team for most of the game. They had this game down as a marker in the sand and were taking the game to JPC in all

aspects. Going into half time Aquinas/TWOM had a 7 – 3 lead and were the better side. The half time oranges were had and Aquinas/TWOM came out firing again and went to 14 – 3. This seemed to kick start the JPC team and the hit back with a try to take the score to 14 – 10. JPC then had a great period in the game where they were awarded a penalty try with Aquinas/TWOM constantly offending on their own goal line. With the score at 17 – 14 to JPC and 8 minutes to go, the action was constant with both sides going close to scoring tries, however Aquinas/TWOM were awarded a penalty with 3 minutes to go. Out in front they slotted the goal to bring the scores even at 17 all. Desperation was the call for both teams trying to get the winning points when Aquinas/TWOM were awarded another penalty on full time. The shot missed and the draw was the result 17 all. The JPC boys will need to get their game faces on this weekend with a mouth-watering clash against RBHS 3rd XV at JPC. Draw this weekend Fri 7 August JPC U16’s v WHHS 3.45pm @ JPC Sat 8 August JPC U14’s v Trident 10.30am @ Trident Sat 8 August JPC 1st XV v RBHS 3rd XV Midday @ JPC Richard Haigh 027 7773445

ON-LINE WORK EXPERIENCE

Tutored Internships available for ages 15 -18 Operation Wallacea has been leading remote expeditions for university and school groups wanting to get involved in real biodiversity and conservation research for 20 years. By doing so we have become experts in planning, training, and delivering complex projects. The work placements we are proposing offer students with an interest in science, English, marketing and project management the opportunity to work alongside our team of internationally-renowned scientists, business development, marketing and expedition management experts.

Placements will be run entirely online, allowing students to work from the comfort of their own homes whilst recreating a genuine work-from-home environment via a carefully managed daily schedule, regular deadlines and constant contact with managing staff via remote working software including Microsoft Teams. Our placements are designed not only to give students an insight into working life, but to develop a range of core skills that are both directly relevant to careers in STEM and transferable to many other career paths, as well as linking closely to their school curricula. Science Internships £100: 5 days with start dates in August, September and October 2020 Students choose from a selection of projects they wish to work on, including Caribbean coral reefs and their fish communities, spider monkey behaviour and large mammals in an African savannah. They will then complete a week-long programme designed to support them through the entire research process, from project conception and data collection, to data analysis and science communication, producing a final scientific report that would be ideal as an independent research project towards their broader studies. Our programme will include introductions to computer coding in R, GIS and the production of maps, and statistical analysis of data, which are transferable skills that would look great on any students’ CV and university application. This internship would suit students with an interest in natural sciences and data analysis. For more information go to: https://www.opwall.com/schools/educational-benefits/work-experience/
