From the Headmaster
It has been wonderful to welcome the group of six Shrewsbury boys and Mr Jonathan Akhurst, who joined us on Friday for an exchange. These boys will experience two weeks of school life as Wetpups boys. They have already participated in sports day, played a water polo match, experienced both isiXhosa and Afrikaans lessons, as well as learned to play the marimbas. We hope their final week will be most enjoyable and enriching.
We are currently on a strong manners drive. We believe that as a proudly traditional school, with a rich history, that there are a number of perceived “outdated” practices we need to hold onto quite dearly. Society has, to a degree, moved away from recognising the vital importance of gentlemanly behaviour; perhaps through liberalism or just owing to time pressures.
We find nowadays that an elderly gentleman who stands back for a lady and removes his cap, is conspicuous as the minority as opposed to an accepted norm. We do, as a school, need to move with the times; however we feel strongly that our boys should still be observing old school standards with regards to their manners.

Educating Hearts and Minds
celebrating life and learning
From the Headmaster cont/d Respect and humility are vital characteristics that every young Wetpup boy should be displaying daily. A Grade 7 class kicked off the campaign on Monday with: “Gracious Greetings”. This, demonstration on appropriate greetings, while light hearted and enjoyable, communicated a very important message. We ask that irrespective of where our boys are, that we continually remind them to be aware of their greetings. Those parents, who so kindly assist us with rosters at school, please assist us by reminding boys of their greetings and thank yous should they forget! We are under no illusion that this will not simply be fixed overnight, but will need to be a permanent focus. It is one we are quite prepared pursue.
Thank you, once again, for all your support of the school in a myriad of capacities.
Have a magnificent weekend.

MySchool Card and the WPPS Bursary
Fund Did you know that every time you swipe your MySchool card you could be contributing to our bursary fund? About the WPPS Bursary Fund: In South Africa today, there is an important focus on developing people from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to take up positions of leadership in all spheres of business and public service. To ensure that such candidates are able to live up to the expectations of these positions and to reach their full potential, the emphasis should be on preparing talented individuals from a young age. In this respect, our country’s independent schools undoubtedly have a huge role to play. We believe that Western Province Preparatory School is in a unique position to make a significant contribution in identifying and nurturing such children in their formative years, so that they can readily assume leadership roles in high school and beyond. Our bursary fund allows us to support several boys each year. Help us raise funds for this worthwhile cause, by using your MySchool card and directing the funds to WPPS.
