The most effective method to control undesirable effects of metal corrosion is Cathodic protection.

This technique, used worldwide since the 1930’s was originally introduced in the early nineteenth

century to meet the needs of the British Navy and also used, with excellent results, for the protection of

underground structures. When it comes to Cathodic protection, especially in the leisure craft, industry

(leisure craft industry) we usually think of sacrificial anodes. In fact the method is essentially divided into

two clearly defined technical areas: passive Cathodic protection (sacrificial anodes) and active Cathodic

protection (impressed current). Both techniques offer protection of metallic structures that are subject

to wet corrosion.

This is achieved by lowering the natural electrochemical potential of the metal to be protected by

inducing a flow of current between the anode and the cathode (structure).

There are many fields of application of Cathodic protection: marine (nautical, commercial, offshore,

inshore, industrial, etc.) to land applications (aqueducts, pipelines, oil pipelines, etc.) as well as those

applications where you need a specific defence against electrochemical corrosion.

Sacrificial anodes, more commonly known as “zincs”, are installed at specific locations on the

underwater section of a hull as part of a passive cathodic protection system. The objective is to

protect any metal structures immersed in water, from corrosion.

The principle of operation is very simple: the anode is made of an alloy which has an electrochemical

potential less than most metals used on a boat, which enables an electrochemical process to take

place.

A current will flow from the anode to the cathode (the metal structure to be protected) to equalise the

potential difference, resulting in the loss of electrons by the anode and its accelerated dissolution in

water. Consequently, the metal structure in contact with the anode, has a greater reserve of electrons

that are also utilised to power the electrochemical process which otherwise would have contributed

to the corrosion of its surface. In this situation

the metal is protected from the electrochemical

corrosion, depending on the type, quantity of

anodes fitted and their relative position.

To achieve this type of protection it is essential

to create a potential difference which induces a

current flow between the anode and cathode.

This is only possible by connecting the metal

material to be protected, with a metal of lower

nobility; as a consequence this will work as a

sacrificial anode.

Our objective in practise, whenever we install

sacrificial anodes on a metal structure, is to bring

the electrochemical potential of the metal to be

protected to a certain value (the so called protection

level) that generally appears to be more negative

than the initial one.

GALVANIC SERIES CHARTCorrosion potentials of materials in flowing seawater

GALVANIC SCALEIn order to protect a metal from corrosion, you have to sacrifice a more active one in its place. The most common metals used

for this purpose are zinc, aluminum and magnesium.

These metals act as anodes to the considered structure and the sacrificed material protects the structure itself, hence the words

"sacrificial anode".

Most metals have the ability to be oxidized (corrode) but some more easily than others.

Its relative index on the galvanic scale determines the corrosion rate.

Elements are listed according to their increasing nobility (from the top to bottom). Towards the bottom you find the ele-

ments with a lower electrochemical potential which, in a cathodic reaction, will corrode and form an anodic area as long

as they are in continuity with an element of higher nobility. In addition, metals and alloys close to each other have less

tendency to form strong galvanic pairs thus their coupling, in the presence of an electrolyte, is less of a concern than when

contact is made between metals or alloys much further apart on the scale.

SACRIFICIAL ANODES

Materials used for sacrificial anodesFor passive cathodic protection, sacrificial anodes are used. These can be made up of various alloys

which makes them suitable for use in different environments. The electrochemical potential according to

the galvanic or nobility scale of the materials previously illustrated, shows which metal can be sacrificed

to protect another one based on their position in the above-mentioned scale, with certain alloys more

suited to some environments than others. For example, in fresh water the most appropriate and popular

alloy used is magnesium.

Listed below are the internationally certified alloys used for the production of sacrificial anodes and their

features.

ZINC anodesSeveral alloys are available which comply with the U.S.MIL American standard, such as type 18001-H

(J-K), characterized by the addition of cadmium and aluminum. These are ideal for use in sea water, but

also used in lakes and rivers.

You can also get a strong anodic behaviour from zinc with a high purity (99.995%) without the addition

of other elements.

It is good practice to change anodes regularly, even if there has been little corrosion.

Use with temperatures that exceed 55 ° C is not recommended.

ALUMINIUM anodes (cadmium free)There are many different types of aluminium alloy anode currently available. These are characterized by

the addition of impurities such as zinc and indium. The exact contents of these impurities is important,

particularly in the cases of iron and copper which should not exceed 0.15% and 0.005% respectively.

The main characteristic of an aluminium anode is the high nominal electrical capacity, which is three times

higher than the same mass in zinc. By using aluminium in structures instead of zinc anodes, you require

significantly less aluminium anodes and it is therefore easier to manage their underwater installation or

subsequent replacement. Aluminium anodes are frequently used in industrial sectors, such as offshore

platforms or pipeline systems, where a long-term protection is required, usually over 15 years, and where

anodes replacement is expensive and difficult.

They are also used in the commercial sector, such as cargo ships, tankers or cruisers or where there are

long periods between planned dry dock activity. They are recommended for hulls which remain perma-

nently in water ( such as barges, house boats etc.). More recently, many outboard engine manufacturers

switched to using aluminium anodes due to the growing objection to the continued usage of zinc anodes

in some parts of the world. Cadmium which is a material always present in zinc alloy, can be considered

harmful to the sea.

MAGNESIUM anodesMagnesium alloys, which have potentials above 1500 mV (ref. Cu / CuSO4), are mainly used in the pre-

sence of high resistivity electrolytes (fresh water, soil, etc.)

All of them are characterized by the addition of manganese 0.2 ÷ 1.2% and for the most common versions

zinc 2 ÷ 4% and aluminum 5 ÷ 6%.These types can also be used in the presence of high temperatures,

such as inside a boiler.They are also suitable for structures that require fast effects or temporary cathodic

protection. Magnesium anodes have a performance of around 50% and while they have a fast-acting

use in marine environments, they also deliver a high degree of protection. However, due to the speed at

which they corrode, they are not recommended for use in brackish waters. Another limit to their use is

the fact that magnesium is a metal which can be difficult to store. It begins to corrode with the slightest

moisture in the atmosphere and is difficult to machine due to its potential to become a fire hazard.
