A total of 13 lenders hiked their variable rates last Friday for both owner occupiers
and investors, a move that will see the majority of Aussie mortgage holders hundreds of dollars out of pocket.
A RateCity analysis shows that ‘Rate Hike Friday’ will hit mortgage holders by an average of 0.17 percentage points which translates to $372 per year on a $300,000 home loan.

it at least 18 lenders in total who are bucking the RBA’s downward trend.
RateCity money editor Sally Tindall said that in the eye of the rate storm, a number of smaller lenders were still dropping their variable rates.
“We’ve identifi ed at least 24 lenders who have dropped their variable home loan rates in recent months. But there’s a catch – the overwhelming majority of these lenders will only give you the new deal if you’re a new customer,” she said.
Ms Tindall said the love was not being shared when it came to loyal and existing customers at many fi nancial institutions.
“Loyalty has well and truly left the home loan market. If you want one of the lowest rates, the chances are you’ll have to switch,” she said.
“Just one bank in our research, CUA, is dropping its basic variable rate for existing customers as well as new ones. That’s a strike rate of one per cent.”
Switching is often a last resort due to the complicated process.

that local community groups, councils, charities and private organisations can apply for grants of up to $50,000 to create stronger social housing communities.
The one-off grants available to our local community form part of the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improve-ment Fund – a three-year, $20 million commitment to build stronger social housing commu-nities.
Grants will be awarded to organisations in our community for projects that could include the development or upgrade of communal gardens, playgrounds,

basketball courts, skating ramps and meeting areas that provides opportunities for our community to come together.
“This is all about turning social housing areas into strong, vibrant communities that our residents are proud to call home,” Mr Ayres said.
“I’m excited by the possibilities that these grants can bring to our local social housing communi-ties.”
Tanya Davies said: “The money can also be used for developments that improve resident safety such as disability access, fencing or lighting and that help integrate social housing with the surround-ing community.
“I encourage all local organisa-tions with a passion for improving the community to apply so we can create better living environ-ments for everyone in Penrith and Mulgoa.”

Keep your carpets clean
Stains will reappear: If you don’t treat a stain right, it will come back again before you know it. To avoid this, place a cloth over the stain and put something heavy over the top, and leave it overnight. This will allow the cloth to fully absorb the stain.
Careful when cleaning: Don’t just rub carelessly when trying to get rid of a stain. Be as careful as you can otherwise you may spread the stain.
Vacuum often: Make sure you don’t just vacuum when it’s obvious your carpet needs it. Set yourself a regular interval between vacuuming so your carpet cleaning is consistent. Once a week should do the job, but if you have pets, perhaps twice a week is the way to go.
Steam clean: No matter how well you take care of your carpet, make sure you get your carpets profession-ally cleaned at least once a year. You can also buy carpet shampoo machines and do the job yourself between professional cleans.
Be prepared: Get yourself a bunch of carpet cleaning fluids and the like, so you are ready when something goes unexpectedly wrong. Preparation is everything!
