W ith popular reality TV shows encour-aging homeowners to get stuck into

some DIY projects, electricity networks Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy have issued a warning.

The organisations are calling on DIYers to leave electrical work to the experts, so as to avoid being put in life threatening situations.

Ausgrid Chief Operations Offi cer, Trevor Armstrong, said that taking on complex and dangerous projects without any experience is illegal and can result in death.

“All electrical work around the home, such as new light sockets and power points, must be completed by a qualifi ed electri-cian,” Mr Armstrong said.

“Our message is simple. If you are not a qualifi ed electrician, call one.”

out by Ausgrid, which questioned about 1200 people about their attitudes towards electricity, one in four people would not call an electrician for complex jobs like relocating power points, install-ing ceiling fans or replacing light fi ttings.

“Electricity makes DIY deadly. Keep that in mind at this time of year and don’t be tempted to DIY when it comes to electrical work. It’s not worth the risk,” Mr Armstrong said.

The research revealed that alarming numbers of people have misconceptions about electricity.

53 per cent of people wrongly believe that wearing rubber soled shoes would prevent electrocu-tion, 72 per cent think that it is safe to piggy back powerboards and double adaptors, when it isn’t, and 53 per cent of people wrongly

think that it is safe to use a ladder near powerlines, as long as it isn’t metal.

In addition, more than half of those questioned thought that it is safe to touch a fallen powerline with a wooden object, when it can prove to be a fatal action.

Rod Howard, Endeavour Energy Chief Operating Offi cer, said that to highlight the potential dangers of carrying out DIY electrical work, the electricity networks have launched a joint social media campaign.

“We know non-electrical trades-men who are homeowners are the most likely to attempt this type of illegal work at home,” Mr Howard said.

“The campaign uses actual DIY- disaster scenarios, and shows the true impact when electricity is added into the scenario,” Mr Howard added.

agents are boycotting Fairfax Media’s new industry-owned real estate business as the publisher lays the groundwork for a float of its listings portal Domain, according to a report in The Australian.

Under the model, Domain is proposing to award real estate agents equity in proportion to how much money they spend on premium-priced property listings.

But according to The Australian, the move has exposed Domain to accusations of putting the success of the business before the interests of Australians selling their homes.

Man busted overdodgy insurance

A trader has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service after he was

found guilty in court of producing fraudulent Home Warranty Insur-ance documentation.

Andrew Lee Pedzik, trading under the name Zen Projects Pty Ltd, was very active in the Sydney area where he worked on projects including Jordan Springs, Cranebrook, Glenmore Park and Mulgoa.

He was charged with 47 off ences for ‘using false document to infl u-ence exercise of public duty’ and ‘using false document to obtain

fi nancial gain’. Last week he was found guilty of these off ences and in addition, was found guilty of eight counts of receiving payment for building work, without having insurance.

He will be required to undertake 300 hours of community service, as well as pay a $500 fi ne.

These rulings are in addition to action taken against him by Fair Trading to prevent him from directing a residential building company or contracting any work for two years.

“The trader showed a complete disregard for consumers with the court fi nding they had produced

fraudulent Home Warranty Insurance documentation for 47 projects,” said Fair Trading Commissioner, Rod Stowe.

“By fabricating insurance docu-mentation the company put into jeopardy potentially millions of dollars worth of residential work. The failure to have suffi cient Home Warranty Insurance can mean the consumer is unable to seek compensation in the event the builder is not able to complete the project or to rectify any construction defects.”

to funding urban infrastructure after a levy totalling over $83,000 per lot was proposed in new release areas, according to the Property Council of Australia.

The Property Council’s members include the major developers of residential projects across NSW.

It has made the call following an IPART recommendation that a levy of $83,000 per lot should apply to release areas within Blacktown.

“No one disputes the need for essential infrastructure in new communities, but costs are excessive and homebuyers are being hit hard,” NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said.

“These levies are taxes built into the cost of new homes and adding to the affordability woes facing homebuyers.”

Mr Byres said that without reform, homebuyers will continue to bear the upfront costs attached to urban infrastructure.

(RBA) delivered a shock on Tues-day when it held interest rates at 2.25 per cent. It was widely expected that the RBA would reduce rates to a record low, but it has held tight at least for another month.

Following a recent re-zoning, a former golf driving range at Hoxton Park [35km west of the Sydney CBD] is to be developed as a fuel and refreshment stop servicing north and southbound traffi c on the M7 motorway. The M7 is a 40km long motorway linking the M2, M4 and M5 motorways and opened in December 2005. It currently has no convenient fuel or refresh-ment stops along its entire length. Specialist retail agency Ray White Retail have been appointed to lease the highway service centre and additional retail and commercial areas immediately behind the highway uses. “The owners have been successful in achieving rezoning to B6 Enterprise Corridor which

provides for a wide range of uses including service station, food and drink premises, motels, medical centres, child care and even bulky goods and full retail – including supermarket,” said Ray White Retail principal, Bob Walsh. Mr Walsh believes such a facility is well overdue and badly needed. “The Westlink M7 Motorway is now by far the busi-est of all the Sydney motorways with average traffi c numbers in excess of 154,000 vehicles per day – which is comparable to those of the Sydney Harbour

Bridge. The growth in traffi c from 2006 has been a staggering 160 per cent with current growth a still very impressive eight per cent per annum,” he said.

Thousands of square metres of commercial offi ce space can be converted to bring more residents into Canberra’s city centre, through a new partner-ship between government and industry, says the Property Council of Australia. “Creating a lively, liveable city centre requires more residents. One of the ways to achieve this is through some revision to aspects of our current planning and taxation regime which prevents building owners from making the most of their assets,” says the Property Council’s ACT Execu-tive Director, Catherine Carter. The Property Council’s latest Offi ce Market Report reveals a record high offi ce vacancy rate of 14.7 per cent. Similarly, Canberra CBD Limited’s latest Street Level Activity Report registers a vacancy rate of 15.9 per cent.

Firstly consider updating your front walkway with materi-als such as pavers, brick and fl agstone which add a bit more interest than traditional cement. The addition of plants as a border for the walkway also helps to create a charming entryway to

the home. Matt recommends low maintenance varieties such as Lomandras, Camellias and Birds of Paradise.

Plants are also a great way to introduce colour to the rest of your front yard and what better

Having a garage sale?

Advertise it: There’s no sense having a garage sale if you don’t tell everyone about it. Yes, the sign on the pole down the street is great but don’t forget about the local newspaper, websites like Gumtree and even the local radio station. Spread the word so you have a good turnout at your garage sale.

Don’t just sell junk: A garage sale shouldn’t just be about getting rid of useless items. Make sure you have enough good quality items that people will actually want.
